Pope pleads on M. East, Chile VATICAN CITY (NC). — Pope Paul VI begged those responsible for renewed warfare in the Middle East and for repressions in Chile, to compromise, to avoid vendettas, and to remember that "those we call enemies, are men and our brothers." Pope Paul, who has made a search for peace in the world, a hallmark of his reign, told thousands in St. Peter's Square on October 7.

$3.1 M. to Project Compassion The Archdiocese of Perth contributed almost $33,000 to Project Compassion in 1973. This is about the same as last year. In the recent ReAppeal construction for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, $10,700 was donated. 77 out of 105 parishes in the archdiocese contributed to this sum. Australian Catholic Relief have released figures for the year that 1972, showing $521,254 was contribu ted from all over Australia for the 1973 Lenten Appeal. This brings the total donated to the annual Appeal since its inception in 1965, to $3.1 millon. Conspicuous among donations to other A.C.R. for the year was $98,000 received in undonations, solicited $79,000 of this being for refugee settlement in Bangladesh. recently. Mr. Wilczek, a lawyer, was commenting on a series of guidelines on sex education announced by the CMEC. The guidelines are designed to give Catholic schoolchildren a knowledge of human sexuality by means of a series of systematic human relationship courses. Mr. Wilczek said the Council had no objection to the Australian Science Education Project course of sex education in use in some government and Catholic schools at present. "However, we believe an additional dimension should be given to the teaching method. This can come only from the human relationship of the parent-teacher-pupil. "You can't teach sex knowledge in the same way you teach plumbing. "The Council would like to see the experts on sex education lecturing to parents and teachers in small groups on how to impart the information in ;-c.rn to children," he said. "At present there is a tendancy for a school to call in some experts on sex education to have a talk to the boys and girls. "The question of sex cannot be handled this way. It is too easy to embarrass or hurt the childmil with this sort of approach." The CMEC, in its guidelines for sex education for students, parents and teachers, says: The key areas on which education in human sexuality should focus are: • Accurate physiology without embarrassment. • Individual differences with emphasis on selfacceptance. O Helping young people to communicate and relate with each other in large and small groups. • Helping young people to express their feelings in a creative way both to peers and adults. Intimate human relationships should be considered in the broader context of general human relationships, the CMEC statement says. In the meantime, such programmes in schools should be blended into the over-all school curriculum. Too often schools present sex education as a 'hot potato' and call on outsiders to handle it all too briefly. It becomes the big deal which soon disappears off the 'specials' counter and provides no after sale service. Mr. Ronald Conway, a CMEC member and psychologist, said sex education for Forms 1 and 2 was likely to be based on the Australian Science Education Project course, Males and Females. He said extra material would be taught with the course to place it within the Catholic system of values. "We would like to see it as part of a human relationships course because it concerns a social encounter and not just a biological one," Mr. Conway said. He said higher forms would be taught a more sophisticated approach to sex — which might be based on a manual being prepared by the Mercy Hospital's community medicine department.
