The co-operative process in religious edu cation "Do not abolish the Christian school" said the renowned Christian educationist Brother Kevin Treston, in Perth last week. Brother Treston is a Marist Brother who has built up a high reputation of scholarship in the field of religious education, most r ecently gaining a rare Ph.D in the subject of r eligious education at Notre Dame University, U.S.A. Brother Kevin is a tutor at the Marist Training College in Sydney, but his real interest extends far beyond the classroom of the Christian school. He is adamant that real Christian education must bear fruit in parish programmes involving adults and not just their children. In ten crowded days he repeated his message to every level of other and school groups, including a for special session priests and a final successful evening for nearly 200 laity from 25 parishes who discussed his ideas at College, Brigidine

practical areas in which to commence this co-operative process in education is in preparation for the sacraments. Brother Treston backs up his theory with the wide experience he had in the United States where he worked in parish teams in order to study his education aims in practical sacprogramramental mes. He is a realist in facing up to the fact that all is not going to be achieved in one year or in one campaign. People, he says, must be coaxed according to their capacity to participate. This, he believes will generate the programme's own momentum. He is strongly insis tant that the work of education Christian can and must be done by the laity themselves. This he particularly advocates through the establishment of contact groups who, in conjunction with the parish pastoral council, will expand Christ ian education programmes at all levels. Most ideally, he calls for the appointment in a parish of a parish co-ordinator of religious education. This would be a full or part-time salaried per-
son whose task it would be to co-ordin ate the direction of religious education in the parish or area. Lest anyone think that the field of Christ ian education is limited, Brother Treston lists 18 areas beyond the Christian school where people need programmes of education and development in Christian living and understanding. Senior citizens are to him a particular area where the Christian parish community can engage in a number of programmes. Meals on Wheels and other practical helps are all considered part of the educational process in people's practical lives. Brother Treston has even detailed the sort of premises that a modern parish ought to build in order to provide a centre where the religious education of people can be coordinated. GERALDTON AUXILIARY The raffle conducted by the Geraldton St. John of God Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, which was drawn at the hospital recently, netted about $960. First prize, a return air ticket Geraldton-Perth for two, was won by Mrs. B. Barry, of Rivervale. Only 200 of the 5,000 tickets were unsold. The garden party-fete will be held on Sunday, December 2. in the convent grounds. A very talented young band will provide entertainment.
