He bought the pulpit for £130 ($279) at a public auction of unwanted fittings. The pro-cathedral has been closed with the opening of the new cathedral. The unique sale comprised 360 lots, including statues, stainedglass, candlesticks and benches, and even a confessional. Hundreds of prospective buyers turned up from many parts of Britain. One American had authorised a representative to bid for him. A spokesman for Clifton diocese said: "We took great care to en sure that parishes had first pick of the fittings. All objects in the sale were what was left over after that. "Parishes of course were only charged a small fee and in some cases no fee at all for fittings. "No de-consecratior process for the pro. cathedral was necessary, since the building was never consecrated." The brass candlesticks were a very popular buy. They raised £2,000 (S4,280) at £30 ($64.20) to £100 ($214) a pair. hospital, at Hexham, Newcastle. At Forrestfield, he will be in charge of a community of three Brothers plus lay staff. The lay staff includes female nurses. Brother John noted that, apart from hospitals staffed entirely by the order, it was common for the Brothers to nurse in conjunction with female staff. He said that today male nurses were entering many levels of nursing and nursing supervision to which they had not aspired

before. He said that he was looking forward to serving the 36 patients who are receiving extended care at Forrestfield. Already he was greatly impressed with the standard of geriatric nursing that had been establishel at Forrestfield and at other hospitals in the metropolitan area. 100 tons of special paper from China. • for Scriptures CANBERRA. — The United Bible Societies is to import 100 tons of special paper from China --- and hopes to get permission later to return it to China in the form of Scriptures. News of this arrangement was given last week by Mr. Keith W. Ellem, director of the Bible Society in Hong Kong, a former Canberra resident ' who is in Australia on leave. He described the paper ordered by the societies — an association of fifty-six Bible Societies throughout the world — as of the high quality required for Bible printing. It was readily available in China and was

so reasonably priced that the Bible Society movement had taken advantage of its availability. The paper would be used not only for printing the New Chinese Version of the New Testament but also for Scripture publication throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Mr. Ellem said that the New Chinese Version of the New Testament was now being translated and was due for completion by September, 1974. On completion of the New Testament project, the whole of the Bible would be translated and printed in the Chinese language. The existing New Testament in Chinese was now 50 years old. While it was a faithful translation, a new translation was needed which would speak more dynamically to people today.
