Clergy of the Archdiocese (and throughout Australia) have been advised by the Australian Attorney-General's department of the new age applying to matrimonial consent in Australia. From July, 1973, the minimum age at which a person, male or female, may marry without parental or other consent has been lowered from 21 to 18 years.
In its application to males, the new amendment means that the minimum age for marrying without consent and the minimum marriageable age will become the same age. (The minimum marriageable age for females remains 16; for marriage below the minimum marriageable age consent must be given by a magistrate). The new legislation was assented to on May 27. Marriage legislation became a matter for the Commonwealth Parliament the by Marriage Act of 1961, when the law was made uniform throughout Australia by consent of the States. Catholic clergy who are registered with the Government for the celebration of marriages will be following the new regulations.
In Church law a very old provision sets the minimum age for marriage as 16 for males and 14 for females. In practice however, this canon law is never invoked as such a mariage would be depriving a couple of the full protection of the civil law. Thus a bishop directs his clergy to follow the State laws of marriage wherever they do not specifically conflict with CatholiP principles. A further amendment to the Commonwealth legislation is in the circumstances of the giving of consent to minors to marry. For this purpose, as far as possible, the distinction is removed between children born in wedlock and children born out of wedlock. The most important change in this regard will be that the consent of a father who is not married to the mother will be required in certain circumstances, for example, where the father is living with the mother or where the minor is living with him.

Especially for the younger nurse, their monthly meetings at St. John of God Hospital, are considered valuable when they concentrate on real daily Christian living and, although it is important for higher levels of nursing, study of moral principles and ethical questions does not predominate in such a way as to reduce the warmth and worth of the meetings. One of the main difficulties of gathering nurses is together their shift work and their wide distribution at many metropolitan hospitals but the committee would welcome any nurse even if she could only come occasionally.
