"Although the work of the Tribunal must be concerned with the legalities of marriage, much of its actual work is at the personal level where the priest is dealing with a person in need." Indicative of the concern of the Church for the total welfare of marriage was that a seminar devoted to both the legal and pastoral aspects of marriage was due to be held in Perth at the end of May and this would involve teachers as well as priests since it was at the level of the school child that the first and proper education of a true Christian marriage should take place, he said.

At. the age of 15 he entered the Trappist's Gethsemane Abbey in Kentucky. He was a Trappist Brother for 11 years before being dispensed from his vows at 26. Now at the age of 37, Walsh has fulfilled two dreams. He is tops in his profession as a police chief and he is an ordained minister of the Church. Walsh, his wife Marilyn, and their children, Sheila Ann (9), and Kevin (8), live in
a modest home in Buffalo Grove. As a deacon, however, he is assigned to Queen of the Rosary parish, Elk Grove Village, the parish in which he lived when he was accepted for the archdiocese's first deacon class in 1970. He was one of 97 permanent deacons ordained for the archdiocese last December. Walsh does not see himself split into three roles. He is a father, a police chief, a deacon; rather he lives the single role of a Christian. He sees himself as a man designated to serve. He believes this ministry is a fulltime job. That includes both his formal duties as a deacon and his job as police chief.
