Archbishop deplores Federal abortion Bill Following is the text of Archbishop Goody's pastoral letter on the abortion Bill to be introduced in the Federal Parliament: Notice of a private member's Bill legalizing AborHon on demand has already been given in Federal Jarliament. It will come up for debate and a vote will be tkaen probably early in May. Our new Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, has stated publicly that he f avours the Bill. Where is our society going? Next we shall have Bills in Parliament to legalize the killing of defective infants and useless old people. This is not a "scare statement." In England where easy abortion was legalized a few years ago, there is already a strong campaign for legalized "euthanasia;" a fancy term of Greek origin which sounds better to some than legalized killing of physical and mental defectives — young and old! These demands for the easy killing of defenceless human beings, born and unborn, are coming from those who are most shrill in their condemnation of the violence in Vietnam. We could turn a cold, blind eye to the killing in any war — just or unjust; we could legalize the abolition of traffic laws; the resultant tragic slaughter in either case would count for but a fraction of the destruction of a multitude of baby Australians consequent on legalized abortion on demand. "Those killed would not be aggressive, well-armed men nor equally aggressive and thoughtless motor drivers but the most innocent and defenceless of all our people. The tens of hundreds of thousands killed by abortion would have been the future hope of Australia and some undoubtedly would have developed into outstanding citizens in every walk of life. Of course a woman (or a man) has the right to decide whether she wishes to become a parent or not. One has not the right to change one's mind however, after becoming a parent when the changed decision requires the destruction of a human life born or unborn. If the Bill passes through the Federal Parliament, abortion will be permitted "on demand" up to the 20th week of pregnancy. Why only up to 20 weeks? Because the fetus is not a live human being until t he 140th day? No! The fetus is obviously a human being with all its life systems working long before that but because violently extracting the fetus after that time is a
bit more difficult for the doctor and more dangerous, to the mother; before or after it is equal ly destructive of a completely passive and defenceless human individual. Is not this the eleventh hour for Christians to stand up and be counted? If we jut sit and do nothing but wring our hands and deplore the dechristianizing of our society we have only ourselves to blame if yet another bastion of private and public morality falls undefended. Those who are convinced, as I am, that the pass: age of this Bill would be a national disaster and a blot on Australia's good repute have the human right and the democratic duty to protest. They must make their protes,t known in the clearest of terms to the members of both Houses of Parliament who temporarily have the power, in Our name, to approve or to reject this thoroughly bad piece of contemplated legislation.

Now when I raise my voice, or you raise your voice, in opposition to abortion ,the abortion pushers condemn us for trying to impose our moral code on the politicians and our essentially pluralistic Australian society. Then we are treated to discussions and debates on the issue so charged with emotion that polemics, superficiality, oversimplification and misrepresentaton obscure the greatness of the principle involved .That principle is the sanctity and value of human life, and the extent and limits of civil society's responsibility towards it. As Australian citizens and as Christians, we have not only a right, but a duty to stand up and be counted in our opposition to abortion. For us, abortion, or as it is sometimes called "termination of pregnancy," always equals extermination of a baby. If politicians, regardless of the party to which they belong, tell us to be silent, that the Church should keep out of politics, we must reply that politicians are our elected representatives as opposed to dictators, and while we have a right and a duty to "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's," we have also an equal right and an equal duty to speak out in opposition when Caesar attempts to lay sacrilegious hands on the things that belong to God.

W ASHINGTON (NC) - Catholic school officials seeking to persuade parents to send their children to Catholic schools have de-emprasised the notion of duty and are publicising the merits of the schools. What the officials are seeking to make widely known is expressed in the conclusion reached by Father Andrew Greeley, programme director at the National Opinion Research Centre, and his colleagues after three years of research into the effects of Catholic education. All available data, Father Greeley said, show that 'academically Catholic schools are on the average scmewhat superior to public schools. Catholic secondary schools are considerably superior to public high schools."

Nun wants to be ordained
COLUMBIA (NC) — Sister Anne Marie Gardiner wants to be ordained. Although Canon 968 of Church law allows only, baptised males to enter the ordained ministry as deacon, priest or bishop, Sister Anne Marie has not given up. A School Sister of Notre Dame, she is pursuing graduate studies in theology at La Salle College, Philadelphia, to prepare for ordination, and she is pushing for a change in Canon 968 through the various official channels of the Church. She emphasised that she is working with the Church authorities in this. The 29-year-old nun said that she had been interested in an ordained ministry for about five years. Although only a few nuns were interested in ordination for themselves, she said, she felt that "the majority" of women Religious favoured at least having the option open to them.
