Divided Churches 'living contradiction' today

PROJECT COMPASSION APPEAL

There can be only one People of God and the divided churches were a living contradiction in our time, Dr. Lukas Vischer said in his talk on "The Search for Christian Unity".

Project Compassion Sunday, which launches the Project Compassion Appeal for 1973, is on March 4. Boxes and posters have arrived at the Catholic Church Office and are available for collection by parishes. In 1972, $33,000 was donated by the people of the Archdiocese towards self-help projects in the developing countries. The money collected represents the selfdenial effort of Catholics who are asked to practise penance during Lent by giving up some luxury or selfindulgence such as beer, cigarettes, entertainment, etc. This form of penance, now left to the individual person, substitutes for the fasting laws previously imposed by the Church. The responsibility to practise penance still remains as an integral part of the spirituality of all. When such self-denial is linked with helping others in distress or need it has the added advantage of fulfilling the second commandment as given us by Christ, "Love your neighbour as yourself".

I agree wholeheartedly with J. P. McDonald (The Record February 8) andI am disappointed, to say the least, at the Eucharistic Congress organisers' decision to exclude public devotions to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament; and to the Blessed Virgin. I feel that we are letting ourselves down badly at a time when we should be standing up for the "Faith of Our Fathers" and proclaiming far and wide the need for real devotions to Our Lady who herself has repeatedly asked this of us. Surely we should not let this great event pass in such neglect of her requests. As for our non-Catholic friends at the Eucharistic Congress, a surprising number of whom have already a great reverence for Our Lady and the Holy Rosary, we have only to ask her as recommended and they are with us in unity. Bishop-elect Kennedy, who is 42, is the son of Mrs. Gertrude Kennedy and the late Mr. James Ormond Kennedy. He was ordained to the priesthood in St. Francis X.avier's Cathedral on June 29, 1962, after completing his studies at St. Francis Xavier's Seminary. Doctors Admit Abortions in Law-change Bid

PARIS (NC) — More than 300 French doctors have declared here publicly that they have broken France's 1920 law making most abortion a criminal offence. The doctors, by admitting that they had performed or aided illegal operations terminating pregnancies, in effect challenged French courts and medical associations to bring the controversy into the open by attempting to punish and discipline them. The doctors' statement is the latest move in a continuing battle for the relaxation of France's abortion laws. The doctors risk prison sentences of from one to 10 years and fines of up to $16,000 and are liable to be disqualified from practising medicine. was The statement signed by leading professors — including Catholic and other prominent gynecologists. In June, 1971, nearly 600 doctors pleaded for the freedom of abortion.
