The issue of compulsory service which has been a contentious matter for sOrne years has been decisively settled by the incoming Federal Government, as it declared it would be. Contrary to the expectations of some, this was properly achieved through the ballot box, and not as some fringe elements would have hoped by their style of confrontation and law-breaking. National service is a splendid concept. It is true that there is turning away from mil itary activity as the only solution to international problems. It is also becoming clear in the professional services that a wide range of human skills are trained and not just a glorification of - war for its own sake.
