His Grace the Archbishop has released the following letter to the priests, Religious and laity of the archdiocese on the subject of local co-operation with the ideals of the forthcoming Meibourne Eucharistic Congress : My dear Fathers, Religious and Lay people, What a real challenge there is and what a need for all us Australian Catholics to be at least spiritually involved with the Melbourne International Eucharistic Congress and with the spirit of renewal through the Blessed Eucharist which is the overall objective of the Congress. In the great liturgical development which has taken place since the II Vatican Council, great emphasis rightly has been placed on Holy Mass as the great act of worship, thanksgiving and spiritual renewal of the whole Christian Community. This is particularly and truly the case at Eucharistic celebrations in the Parish Church. Nevertheless, because of this desirable emphasis on the Parish Community Mass, and also because of the multiplication of Sunday evening Masses, private devotion to the Blessed Sacrament has very clearly declined and even the liturgical service of Benedictine of the Blessed Sacrament has become quite rare in many (Many otherwise experienced altar places. servers, for example, no longer know what to do if they are asked to serve at Benedictine!) It would seem singularly appropriate, therefore, with the celebration of the Eucharistic Congress rapidly approaching that we all in our various parishes and institutions make some specific effort of worship and reparation to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. All the more is it fitting in Western Australia since relatively few will find it possible to travel to Melbourne for the Congress itself. With these thoughts in mind then: 1. I suggest that beginning from the week of the 18th of December—two months before the opening of the Congress—at least until February 25th, when the Congress closes, that there be one hour of public adoration of the Blessed Sacrament concluding with Benediction each week in every Church and Community Chapel. Undoubtedly difficulties will be encountered in the practice of this suggestion but with sincere encouragement from clergy and Religious I believe that many good people would respond generously. 2. Would it be too much to expect that some similar practice of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament could be continued indefinitely even after the Congress? If this were practicable not only would the Eucharistic Congress have pro-

cluced some lasting blessings but also renewed opportunity would be given for a healthy revival of private Eucharistic devotion. It is worth recalling that the devotion of the Holy Hour of Adoration was begun and pi•omoted at the previous International Eucharistic Congress in Sydney in 1927 and from Sydney it spread throughout the whole world. 3. There are quite a number of parishes in Australia where through a well-organised roster system they maintain perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (in the tabernacle) for t wenty-four hours a day every day of the year. The blessings which such devotion brings upon a parish and a diocese must be incalculable. Would any priest and Parish Council be inclined to initiate such a wonderful chain of prayer here? The fact that it was all achieved for an outlay of some $21 ought not to be considered the most important aspect of the case, even though it might provide an interesting contrast on the money spent on establishing a marriage. The high cost of divorce actions was never intended obviously to be a deterrent to divorce but it probably conveyed a not undesirable impression that it was concerned with something rather serious.

If there is to be a relentless pressure for easier and easier dissolution of marriage some assessment of its obvious consequences needs to be noted. The human rights and the proper protection of children who are tragically involved in these actions are not going to be adequately provided for. Society will have to pick up further bills for these tragic lives. It will be all too easy in a moment of 'crisis or a period of quarrelling for the marriages that need most support to be broken apart by a hasty decision. The third and most serious aspect is that the contrast between a Christian hope for a life-long marriage and the actual state of marriage is only growing wider.
