Inside, the church has not been squared. Its walls have not been smoothed down. This was part of the design, since in their mines and in their homes people at Coober live an underground life. "The general idea," Fr. Cresp explains, "is that when you come to the church you offer your life to God, both your working life and your home life. So we tried to leave the final version with overtones of an opal mine and a Coober Pedy home." Fr. Cresp's parish extends over a vast area, but a lot of it is very empty. Coober Pedy and Andamooka, another opal mining town about 250 miles to the south-west, are his main centres. To the north, he periodically visits Oodnadatta, 200 miles away, and Finke, 400 miles into the northern territory. Once or twice a year he even gets to Ayres Rock at the centre. He also visits Kingoonya and Tarcoola in the south. Sometimes too, he travels west, out

INBORN ERRORS It would appear that migraine belongs to one group of diseases described as inborn errors of metabolism. The theory that every gene is responsible for one enzyme is supported by a study of diseases of metabolism which are known to be inherited. From observations and experience, migraine falls into this category and is inherited as a recessive genetic disorder. One meets many victims of this complaint in the course of a career as nurse and dietitian and naturally one becomes interested in finding if possible, some means of relief. This prompted intense study and research, for migraine can turn a happy, cheerful person into a lonely dispirited one. In addition, a colossal number of working days are lost through this incapacitating chronic illness, which is so universal, for patients can become very ill in a very short time. Dietetic treatment varies according to the degree of headache. Eliminating some foods often gives

More priests in Poland VIENNA (NC).—The number of priestly ordinations in Poland rose to 480 in 1971, according to the monthly press survey of Pax, Poland's Governmentbacked Catholic organisation. In 1970, the number of ordinations was 381, and, in 1969, 406. There were 3,131 students for the diocesan priesthood and 1,093 candidates for the priesthood in religious congregations and orders. The Warsaw archdiocese, which was 856 priests, has 216 students in its seminary.

The relief of poverty There is no absolute standard of poverty. Families whom we regard as living in poverty in Australia would be considered well-off in Asia. Americans consider a substantial proportion of their population to be living in poverty — bringing up families on $100 per week. We still cannot better the definition of poverty given by Adam Smith in the 1 8th century, of famil ies lacking "necessities", which he defined at "not only the commodities which are indispensably necessary for the support of life, but whatever the custom of the country renders it indecent for creditable people, even of the lowest order, to be without." Prof. Henderson found 6 percent of the people in the Melbourne Metropolitan Area to be living in poverty, principally the aged, widowed, divorced and deserted mothers with young children, and families of low-paid workers with a number of children. Poverty persists in spite of our having spent in 1970-71 no less than 51818 million in social services paid in cash. Why? Because we make social services universal. Politicians want votes. So when they hand out money for social services, they want it to "buy" as many votes as possible. The just powers of governments to impose taxation arise from the need to pay for the performance of their legitimate duties, including the relief of the poor. Giving public money to those who do not really need it, with a view to buying votes in the next election, is not a legiti mate function of government, and those who act in this manner are guilty of a grave sin against justice — unless it is claimed that they they may be excused on the grounds that they are men of such

invincible stupidity that they do not really understand what they are doing. Old Age Pensions are paid subject to a Means Test. If this were abolished it would mean levying large sums of money in additional taxation to be paid to people who did not really need it — a manifest offence against justice. On the other hand paying pensions subject to a means test has the very serious economic disadvantage of encouraging people approaching pension age to dissipate their savings, whereas the Australian economy urgently needs more savings. Under our present system you can't win. Child Endowment is paid without a means test; and its extension by the Menzies Government to cover all children was an unblushing piece of vote-buying. Meanwhile it has been eroded by rising prices.
