NIXON WANTS TO BE ON 'GOD'S SIDE' WASHINGTON (NC): President Nixon asked the American public to pray that he will be "on God's side" during his forthcoming trips to Red China and the Soviet Union. Addressing the 19th annual National Prayer Breakfast here, the President said the purpose of his journeys to the communist strongholds was "to help build a new structure of peace." He cautioned, however, against any expectations of "instant peace" from his Peking and Moscow visits. Urging Americans to join the quest for peace, Nixon asked: "Will you pray primarily that this nation, under God, in the person of its president, to the best of our ability, be on God's side?" More than 3,000 persons, including congressmen, diplomats and business and government leaders attended the breakfast, 21 days before the president's historic trip to mainland China. Nixon appeared as the final speaker on a programme which also included Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur F. Burns; Supreme Court Justice Byron R. White, Washington, D.C., Mayor Walter Washington, Evangelist Billy Graham and U.S. Sen. Storm Thurmond (R-S.C.)

CAN THE CHURCH move into the community? Unless the Church is to become an introspective holy huddle this is precisely what it must do, for Christ Himself told His followers that they were to go out into all the world. But to do this it is not enough to be armed only with a few well thumbed texts or the hope of some bright New Jerusalem, which may or may not be just around the corner. For the Church to move out into the society in which it is situated it must first of al l realise that it is made up of people who live within the very community into which it is called to move. So often we Christians seem to be intolerant of those around us or we feel a sense of helplessness be. cause we do not understand how we can convince others of the Gospel facts. But a far more deep seated reason for our reticence to move is that we are unable to communicate with others at an real level. Increasingly, it is becoming recognised that an understanding of the meaning and skills involved in constructive human relationships are essential for communication between adults and between adults and young people. Without these skills, parents are unable to help their children, or themselves, with the modern social issues which confront us all today. Ever increasing numbers of people, inside and outside the churches, are beginning to realise human relationships are the vital factor in doing something about family t.s#4.4.4,0,0,0

Through the Education Unit of the Mental Health Services of W.A., programmes in human relationships are now available for use in neighbourhood and community groups — including your parish. They consist of 22 sessions with kits available for each session and include such subjects as: SelfRespect, Frustration, Communication, Flexibility, Criticism, Authority, Anger, Kind of Love and so on. Everything is laid out so that the organiser can go ahead on a doit-yourself basis with groups of between 10 to 20 people. The Education Unit sends tapes and slides and kit-sheets to make the whole situation as stimulating and useful as possible. The only expense is the postage in returning the material. The strength of these workshops comes in the experience of people from all walks of life looking at the same problem and sharing their feelings and experience towards mutual growth and understanding. Versatility of experience leads to adaptability in communication. So here is an opportunity to have a look at life and at each other as well as at yourself to learn the skills in handling the every day problems of human relationships. Your group, your parish, your organisation and even you yourself could grow from this sort of experience so that the Church overflows into the community because you understood it more or because you understood yourself in relation with it more clearly. A politician may sometimes, in the heat of debate, say about another politician whose managerial ability he holds in low esteem, that he could not run a coffee stall. But even the legendary coffee stall proprietor would be out of business in a few days if he did not know the difference between gross and net.

Good idea but impracticle
IT'S A STRANGE sensation to sit in the audience and wait for the actors to come on stage knowing that the actors have no play to perform.
"THEATRE OFF THE CUFF," at the Hole in The Wall.
The actors walk on stage, introduce themselves, in a rather shy self-conscious manner, then ask the audience for suggestions upon which they wil l build their play. The night I was there, suggestions such as "do something on long hair" or "something about the Lionel Brockman case" or "women's lib" came from the audience. ,They supplied plenty of stimulators which the cast noted, then walked off stage, I assume to get the ideas into shape, made their entrances as characters in whatever piece they chose to play. The first playlet was based on the Lionel Brockman escape and recapture and this took the form of an interview between an overseas press reporter (Jenny McNae) and a senior police officer (Allan Cassell).
