The Common Bible: Cont. from last week

By Father Walter M. Abbott, S.J. Catholics and Protestants and in some cases Eastern Orthodox now are co-operating in new translations of the New Testament in 110 languages. In most of these cases it is hoped that we can achieve a full programme of cooperation between Bible societies and Biblical associations. As each Gospel is published in a pamphlet form •and when complete New Testament becomes available in low-cost paperback form certain priests and trained Catholic laymen should be ready to provide courses, study materials and other aids for the people who will want them. But bishops, priests and people simply cannot wait until the new common translation comes out in their language. What can be done now if they do not have easy access to the Scriptures? Up to now, except in the most highly developed countries, the cost of Catholic editions of the Scriptures has put them beyond the reach of most people. As a result, some bishops examined the existing low-priced editions of the Bible societies and requested Vatican approval of a plan to authorise use of them. The approval was given in Kenya, Tanzania, Congo, Nigeria, Thailand, Chile and other places—with the understanding that where these editions do not meet all established pastoral requirements the bishops will continue to do all they can eventually to provide better editions of the Scriptures.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE This means the bishops could endorse for general Catholic use editions of the Scriptures produced without the deuterocanonical books and without annotations when there is no Catholic edition of the complete Bible with annotations at a price the people can pay —provided of course that the bishops are satisfied the translation is good enough and until such time as it becomes possible to have a complete Bible with annotations or helps for readers in an edition that is easily purchasable by all. In January 1969, a letter from the Secretariat for promoting Christian Unity communicated this general principle to all the conferences of bishops.

Co-operation with the Bible societies to secure widespread lowcost distribution of Scriptures raises the question of providing a fair share of financial support to the societies, which are able to put low prices on their editions, especially in mission countries, because they subsidise the costs of the book. Catholic bishops in various countries where cooperative programmes of production and distribution already have been developed have seen this point clearly and have responded with the mutual understanding that they should contribute to the Bible societies the same way that other churches have done so over the years. Thus in Nigeria, Zambia and Hong Kong, a national Bible Sunday has been established, with the Catholic Church participating. Collections taken up in Catholic churches on Bible Sunday go into the fund that enables the Bible societies to reduce prices even more.

The common Bible movement does not mean that publishers of Catholic editions of the Bible and Catholic commentaries will have to go out of business. On the contrary, as a result of the common Bible work, there will be more need than ever of such Catholic publications. We shall have more need than ever of weekly leaflets, courses, periodicals, aids for preaching, catechetics "and all other Christian instruction," as the Vatican II document puts it. Local or diocesan work should develop along the lines of what the archdiocese of Montreal has in its Bible Centre. Locally or nationally there are possibilities of profiting from the services of the Bible Reading Fellowship centred in London, now open to Catholics as well as Anglicans and Protestants since John Cardinal Heenan, archbishop of Westminster, has endorsed it. The Daughters of St. Paul have a remarkable international programme including correspondence courses. As all this work develops Catholic publishers will have more and more calls made upon their services.

SUITABLE TRANSLATIONS As a result of Vatican II the biblical movement within the Catholic Church has been given .7.reater impetus. More and more Catholics are becoming interested in the Scriptures and will be given more help to understand them. With that necessary basis of understanding established more securely, Catholics more effectively can enter into the work of bringing the Scriptures to non-Christians as described by Vatican II. At the same time, in collaboration with the United Bible Societies, production of complete Bibles, New Testaments and individual editions of the Gospels can be increased greatly and we shall come nearer to the goal set forth by the Vatican II document on the Bible that "the word of God should be available at all times" and that all the people everywhere should have "suitable and correct translations." If the Holy Scriptures fail to reach most of the world's people —and that is a reasonable conclusion from what we know of world Scripture distribution so far —we cannot be content with availability of the Scriptures in bookstores and parish racks. Our mission is to bring God's word to each heart and mind. This massive work of production, distribution and pastoral care needs the help and cooperation of all Christians.

Holiday films Parents, before you give the kids a dollar each to go to the pictures during the school holidays, here are a few points worth considering. Films have changed quite a lot in recent years, and the tags, "Adults only", or "Strictly only adults", appear frequently. Fortunately, several city theatres are catering well for school children during the holidays, and I therefore make the following recommendations. For younger primary school children (six to ten year olds), the Metro Theatre will be showing "Bambi". Children love animals, and they should find this nature frolic most absorbing. This film will also be shown at the Mellway, Swanway, Waverley and Metro Driveins For the older primaries (10 to 13 year olds), the Grand has a good double feature. One of them is "Last of the Wild", an interesting film about animals such as the white hippo, which are becoming extinct. The supporting film is "Strange Holiday", about a group of kids who become shipwrecked and have to look after themselves. The story is similar to "Lord of the Flies", which had a popular appeal a year Dr two ago. Another good show for the young teeners is "Song of Norway", which will be showing at Cinema one in City Arcade. This film is the life story of Eduard Grieg, the 19th Century Norwegian composer. Grieg's life is an interesting one, and his music gives a cameraman scope to sweep over the scenic fiords of Norway. A film of particular interest to Leaving Students is "Wuthering Heights", which will be screened at the new Town Cinema in Hay Street. Director, Robert Fuest, describes his colour version of Emily Bronte's classic novel a s "the story of a couple of difficult children, who become impossible adults, but marvellous lovers". Prices for the films average around sixty cents ,so the kids will need every bit of that dollar, with bus fares and an interval munch to budget for. The Independent Film Distributors will hold a special daily children's programme at Windsor Theatre, Stirling Highway, from Monday, August 30 to the end of the school holidays. Main feature will he "The Little Priest", made in Mexico in colour, starring Cantinflas, Angel Garasa and Mario Moreno. It is a delightful story of a kindly priest whose love for children caused many anxious moments. The second feature is "Run Wild, Run Free", a story of a boy and his horse and the day he had to communicate and only love could do it. P. Ahern.

30.—But outside of this positivism which reduces man to a single dimension even if it be an important one today and by so doing mutilates him, the Christian encounters in his activity concrete historical movements sprung from ideologies and in part distinct from them. Our venerated predecessor Pope John XXIII in Pacem in Terris a lready showed that it is possible to make a distinction: "Neither can false philosophical teachings regarding the nature, origin and destiny of the universe and of man be identified with historical movements that have economic, cocial, cultural or political ends, not even when these movements have originated from those teachings and have drawn and still draw inspiration therefrom. Because the teachings, once they are drawn up and defined, remain always the same, while the movements, being concerned with historical situations in constant evolution, cannot but be influenced by these latter and cannot avoid, therefore, being subject to changes, even of a profound nature. Besides, who cln deny that those movements, in so far as they conform to the dictates of right reason and are interpreters of the lawful aspirations of the human person, contain elements that are nositive and deserving of approval?

ATTRACTION OF SOCIALIST CURRENTS 31. Some Christians are today

attracted by socialist currents and their various developments. They try to recognise therein a certain number of aspirations which they carry within themselves in the name of their faith. They feel that they are part of that historical current and wish to play a part within it. Now this historical current takes on, under the same name, different forms according to different continents and cultures, even if it

drew its inspiration, and still does in many cases, from ideologies incompatible with faith. Careful judgment is called for. Too often Christians attracted by socialism tend to idealise it in terms which, apart from anything else, are very general: a will for justice, solidarity and equality. They refuse to recognise the limitations of the historical socialist movements, which remain conditioned by the ideologies from which they originated. Distinctions must be made to guide concrete choices between the various levels of expression of socialism: a generous aspiration and a seeking for a more just society, historical movements with a political organisation and aim, and an ideology which claims to give a complete and self-sufficient picture of man. Nevertheless, these distinctions must not lead one to consider such levels as completely separate and independent. The concrete link which, according to circumstances, exists between them must be clearly marked out. This insight will enable Christians to see the degree of commitment possible along these lines, while safeguarding the values, especially those of liberty, responsibility and openness to the spiritual, which guarantee the integral development of man.

To live in a hypothetical future is a facile alibi for rejecting immediate responsibilities. But it must clearly be recognised that this kind of criticism of existing society often provokes the forward-looking imagination both to perceive in the present the disregarded possibility hidden within it, and to direct itself towards a fresh future; it thus sustains social dynamism by' the confidence that it gives to the inventive powers of the human mind and heart; and, if it refuses no overture, it can also meet the Christian appeal. The Spirit of the Lord, who animates man renewed in Christ, continually breaks down the horizons within which his understanding likes to find security and the limits to which his activity would willingly restrict itself; there dwells within him a power which urges him to go beyond every system and every ideology. At the heart of the world there dwells the mystery of man discovering himself to be God's son in the course of a historical and psychological process in which constraint and freedom as well as the weight of sin and the breadth of the Spirit alternate and struggle for the upper hand. The dynamism of Christian faith here triumphs over the narrow calculations of egoism. Animated by the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of mankind, and upheld by hope, the Christian involves himself in the building up of the human city, one that is to be peaceful, just and fraternal and acceptable as an offering to God. In fact, "the expectation of a new earth must not weaken but rather stimulate our concern for cultivating this one. For here grows the body of a new human family, a body which even now is able to give some kind of foreshadowing of the new age".
