'Fourth Sunday Of Lent THAT the Parable of the Prodigal Son was never used for a Sunday Mass was one of the arguments brought forward to underline the weaknesses of the content of the old missal. Today's Mass centres around this Parable (Luke 15, 1-3, 11-32), and it serves to illustrate how lop. sided has been the traditional interpretation of the meaning of the Parable. This is one incident where it helps to relate a story to its proper context. It follows on the story of the lost sheep (directed at men) and the story of the lost coin (directed at women), and all three are concerned with illustrating God's mercy. Really, the parable concerns TWO SCILS, for it is meant to highlight the mercy of God to Jew and Gentile alike. The other texts in today's Mass develop further this motion. The Old Testament Reading (Joshua 5, 9-12) reminds us the entry into the Promised Land was but one step in the development of God's plan for His people. The Passover for the Jews reminded them of their covenant with God; our Feast of Easter is a deeper, fuller celebration of the new covenant through Christ. St. Paul (2 Corinthians 5, 17-21) talks of the new creation through Christ. He strikes home by insisting we have been given the work of handing on this reconciliation; we are God's ambassadors. God no longer intervenes directly in human affairs, He acts through Christians acting in His name, "so that in Him (Christ) we might become the goodness of God". It is an awsome responsibility.
