Pope Slates Catholics For Taking It Easy ROME: Pope Paul VI accused many Religious and lay Catholics of seeking an easier life for themselves and of forsaking the use of penance. In an Ash Wednesday address in a Roman chu rch, Pope Paul criticised those in the Religious life who abandoned their garbs and forsaken their "demanding and severe rule of life." And many of the laity, he added, leaned toward "a comfortable and undemanding Christian life," one that excluded, little by little, "mortifica tion, sacrifice and the cross." The intransigence of the whites in hanging on to power is matched by the ferocious ambition of the increasingly articulate black leaders—many of them in exile or in prison—to regain what they consider their own.
BLOODBATH SEEN "We're going to see the greatest, bloodiest race war in history before this century is done," said a retired Kenya administrator who preferred not to be quoted by name. "No white man, woman or child south of the Zambesi River will be safe." But black African guerrilla movements have so far not been impressive either for their numbers, influence or organisation, but they are steadily growing in strength. Ex-Commissioner Cameron said "',,he next two decades will see increasini, commando-type activity on the part of the black guerrillas, in the style of the Viet Cong and Palestinians. And finally will come the deluge." In Zambia, Algeria, and other sympathetic African nations, about 2,000 black South Africans are practising guerrilla warfare. A majority of these men belong to the African National Congress, a black politi-
cal group founded in 1912 and outlawed by South Africa in 1960. Obviously, so few men cannot overthrow the South African Government tomorrow. But M. P. Naicker, editor of the Congress' magazine Sechaba, has said: "we are not adventurous, not setting any time limit. Conditions will determine how and when and where we begin." Forecasts of a South African revolution vary with predilections, of course. John Poorter, press officer at South A frica's embassy here, proudly announced: "We are militarily strong: we are truly a Western nation," as he flashed photographs of sleek Johannesburg skys !rapers to prove his point (no close-up ..iews of black's houses were available).
