The National Committee for the Divorce Referendum is one of several organisations that have sprung up to marshal public opinion against the new law that introduced divorce into Italy The on December 1. summoned committee the press conference on the eve of the formal presentation of a petition for a referendum to the Italian judiciary. Former Senator Lina Merlin, who brought the abolition of Italy's legal brothels on the grounds that they deprived the women inmates of certain rights, came to Rome from Milan for the conference. Referring to assertions by divorcists that the absence of a divorce law had fostered hypocrisy in Italy, Miss Merlin, a professed agnostic, asserted that old-fashioned free love was much less hypocritical than a legalised free love introduced by divorce. Lombardi pledged that during the 16 months that must pass before the referendum can he taken, "we intend to conduct a peaceful campaign."
