CHRISTIANS AND POLITICS
I.
Thursday, January 14, 1971.
snowd take notice of Cardinal ALL Heenan's advice in regard to the part they should play in politics (The Record, December 24). He says that, while it is wise for the Church in its official capacity not to make an issue of politics, that does not mean Catholics, as such, should not have a powerful voice in politics. He emphasises that, while Bishops have to be more careful than most, that does not mean they are less full of indignation than others at some of the things that happen. The points underlined by the Cardinal, that politics often involve moral issues, are borne out by the attitude of many Christians on apartheid, racism, abortion, social injustices. Though the Church as such has to keep its nose clean and not lay itself open to charges of meddling or getting involved in political denunciations or fulminations, that does not preclude Christians taking an active interest and part in politics, for it is fatuous to say, "Keep religion out of politics." It is a Christian duty. Those who feel disinclined to agree with this on a mind-your -own-business principle should realise their everyday life and morality are inseparably bound up with and influenced to a large extent by political actions. There is not one facet on which these do not touch- whether it be migration, social ills, economic stability, industrial relations, community trends, abortion, tyrannous oppression in other countries ( Brazil ) and the impoverished state of the underpriveleged. In today's world, man cannot isolate himself f rom politics. Many people are inclined to bypass this fact. Then they deserve the government they get. They should, in fact, be demanding a high level of leadership and principle from their politicians. When they declaim their shortcomings, in effect, they are merely beating their own chests. People, instead of dismissing politics as something to be endured in their present form, and something superimposed on society, should be looking for ways of giving them a new maturity of thought, a new breadth and depth in Christian principle. The forthcoming State elections will have great importance for the people of Western Australia. Christians must interest themselves in the scale of benefits granted by the State and Commonwealth to the aged, the sick and the widows. There is the field of education in which it can truly be said the 1960's saw a shift in Government policy only because of continued representation of needs both at a political and parochial level. The needs of the 1970's are even more pressing. Though much has been done, much more remains to be done. Christians should be concerned about conservation, air pollution, industrial unrest, the state of agriculture and the deficiencies of the present policies. Family benefits too. are a focal point of interest. Christians should not stand disinterested when matters of conscience such as abortion, legalising of drugs, as some advocate, and other things touching the very fibre of the nation are considered in need of reform. Christians should be alert to any move to undermine the welfare and rights of people. Election time is when they should act decisively and obtain the government they want which is progressive, balanced and sensible. No Christian can ever close his eyes to matters of State and just hope for the best outcome. He must play his part and be involved. If WA is to remain 'The State on the move' it will need men, families and workers. Christians everywhere must ensure this by active interest in affairs of State and a readiness to stand by Christian principles.

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands. The executive board of the 12.)tterdam diocesan pastoral council said it is disappointed that Father 'Arian J. Simonis was named the new bishop of Rotterdam. The board said that a bishop must be a unifying force and that there is reason to fear that as bishop Father Simonis will cause contestation that may harm the diocese. Father Simonis was considered a spokesman for conservative Catholics at the Dutch National Pastoral Council.

SESAME STREET IS REALLY GREAT TV "You'll find what you're looking for down Sesame Street," . . . if I may be forgiven for echoing and paroding a popular hit-song. But all kids who watch Channel 2 at 8 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. are odds-on to agree because Sesame .Street, the greatest children's programme to hit this State is good enough to watch twice each day. For adults, I cannot help but sound the old anti-Yank warning because more than anything else this is an American show. But it is of the same order of excellence as Laugh-In and though one is suspicious of child-mindbinding telly which accustoms children to Americanism as much as to the subjects in hand, the show has too many good points. Aboriginal Dancers "TO BE OR NOT TO BE" Two Magnificent For Open Air Records . . . THE QUESTION Theatre THEATRE/Colm O'Doherty
MUSIC/by H.T.G.
If the one full time professional theatre in Perth, The Playhouse, had an a verage audience of five hundred, or approximately three quarters of its capacity then I am sure that the management would be very happy. An a verage three-quarter house would make any management happy. Now this in round figures would mean for the normal Playhouse production a total audience of less than seven thousand people.
Both our records this week are concerned with lesser-known or rather, less frequently performed music because all the works are recorded from time to time. The disc is very good value in that it has so much music on it, with Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand. ( Decca $5.75).
