THE PAPAL VISIT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS WITH the return of Pope Paul to Rome after his 23,000-mile journey "across the margent of the world", the inevitable questions arise: What did it achieve and what did it say? Without doubt it showed the world in a most emphatic manner the new image of the Church on the Move towards men, engaging in dialogue with the world endeavouring to shake men's consciences towards greater concern for their less well off fellow men. It showed the teaching of Vatican II in action in regard to the collegiality of Bishops and the obligations incumbent on all to be concerned for the missionary evangelisation of peoples. Pope Paul left nothing undone to show the Church's concern for the needy, concern for the rights of individual conscience and the claims of the underpriveleged and indigenous peoples. The Papal visit marks a significant step forward for the Ecumenical movement. The presence of the Pontiff at the Ecumenical Service in Sydney Town Hall removed the last doubt in the minds of many as to the sincerity of the Catholic Church's effort in this regard. But he pointed out that the road to Christian Unity would have to be made at great cost since the legacy of history could not be wiped out overnight. The participation of the Holy Father at the Ecumenical Service indicated, too, to Catholic Bishops and clergy, some of whom were still reluctant to foster ecumenical encounter in dioceses and parishes, that there can be no let up in this matter. Once having put the hand to the plough the mind of the Church and adherance to it demands their support and loyalty. Christian Unity will only come with patient effort. The Pope's Australian visit, while it made a lasting impression on all who met the Pope or saw him on television, would be inadequately assessed were Australians to ignore the Pontiff's call "not to close your limited circle for the sake of selfish satisfaction". This oblique reference to Australia's restrictive immigration laws exhibits concretely and specifically the form that the examination of conscience urged by the Pope must t ake. His assurance to Aborigines of the Church's respect for their traditions also points at the State's obligation to assist in the improvement of the condition of Aborigines --e.g., in the North-West and not leave it entirely to Church and voluntary organisations. The Pope's visit has done much to win goodwill from all sections of the community, not only on the level of co-operation in the use of organisational resources, but also at the human and social level where a certain sense of brotherhood and fellowship was experienced. The Papal Press conference and the Pope's words to the world mass media representatives not only did much to show the Church's appreciation of this great work, but also indicated the spontaneity and warmth of the Holy Father--an indication that may do much to give him a better world Press image. Publicity -wise the Papal visit put Australia in the centre of the world. It brought it nearer the scene of international affairs and gave Australians themselves a greater awareness of the significance of the pontiff. The focus on Australia of the world television and Press cannot be ignored by those in authority. It not only gives a degree of respectability and nationhood but it highlights the onus on the Government to reassess its policies and responsibilities both within and without its frontiers, if the dynamism the Pope speaks of "characteristic of young countries" is to permeate the life of the nation. The Church on the Move out into the world to meet men and to help acknowledge its respect for order, law, authority and freedom arousing men's consciences to greater commitment to service and generosity, may well have gained in impact and sincerity by the Pope's latest world journey. The future alone will decide. That future with its hopes and promise will depend on the individual and collective response to the many calls and leads given by the Holy Father during his three days in S ydney.

He will offer Mass of Thanksgiving on the following day in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Hawthorn. He is the second son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Erie Stoney of Hawthorn. His elder brother, Michael, is also a Jesuit priest, and he has two married brothers, Ian and David. OVER TO YOU ADVENT It's Advent. No, I am not going to say it's nearly Christmas. Too many people are telling you that already. Trying to hurry up your decisions to buy, to spend, to order quantities of food, to send invitations to people you "have" to entertain before Christmas,— before they've all gone away,—before the year ends. But this is the beginning of the year. It's Advent. Don't let Christmas wear you out yet, because if you do you won't notice this beautiful season. Don't let your eyes see red yet, because this is the season of white candles and purple vestments. It always seems to me a perfect season for introducing the young to the calendar of the liturgy. In these four short weeks there are a dozen ways in which any household can demonstrate that this is a time of preparation for a glorious event, and the best of all, I think, is the Advent Wreath. This wreath is becoming quite familiar to Australians, having been promoted quite widely some years ago. It is so easy to put a circle of greenery on the dining table (or hang it, if you can), wind it with ribbons of violet, and punctuate it with four white candles. Then after the evening meal, light one candle while Father leads the family in a small simple Advent devotion. In the second week, light two candles, and so on until the Fourth Sunday of Advent the last tall candle is ignited. This is a fine way to mark off the weeks before Christmas for young children. It's a great distraction from questions such as "How many days now till Father Christmas comes, Daddy?"
