Reunion Charter With Anglicans Suggested POPE PAUL VI issued what might prove to be a charter of reunion between the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches. He said at the canonisation of the 40 English and Welsh martyrs, who died for their faith during the 16th and 17th centuries, that the devotion of the martyrs toward their nation "assures us that no offense to the honour and sovereignty of a great country such as England will be involved on the day of unity of faith and of Christian life is restored, God willing."

THE PROBLEM OF AGE-ISM There is a distinct discrimination against the old in our society that has been called by psychologists, ageism. In its simplest form, it is expressed by the blunt assertion: "We don't want to have all these ugly people around". This is not surprising in an age which boasts of affluance. Do not the old impose a restraint or curb on the time and energies of those who would appear young at heart and who seek nothing but their own pleasure? Is it surprising to find this in an era which glorifies the young with all its promise and excesses? Yet, both the young and the old have a lot in common. They are both introspective and depressed. Their bodies and psyches are in the process of change, and they are both heavy users of drugs. If they want to marry for better or for worse, their families tend to disapprove. Both groups are obsessed with time, though the young calculate from birth to death with all the bright prospects of the 'in between', while the old consider from death backwards. Both sometimes cut it shorter by overdoses or freakish accidents. It is not just cruelty and indifference that cause ageism and underscore the obsolescence of the old. Modern Western culture and the growth of humanist thought has caused this mentality. Hitherto, the past of adults was considered the future of the new generation and bred respect and reverence accordingly. Families stayed together and cherished their elders. The modern small family tends to separate and social changes are so rapid that to learn about the past and one's indebtedness to it is considered irrelevant. Thus, the aged are a strangely isolated generation. The Christian ethic has always had a place for the old and the young. The commandment "Honour thy father and mother" safeguarded the natural right parents have to respect and obedience from their children. While this obligation diminishes with the passage of time and growth into maturity, the appreciation of the intrinsic worth of parents and the debt owed to them by children should have deepened with the years. The awareness of this indebtedness for the Christian is what the Gospels and the Old Testament Sapiential Books promise to reward with Godgiven blessings and prosperity. Such a wareness should bring individual personal happiness, and, for the aged, greater security. Those who have retired from employment have much to offer in skill and advice in many walks of life. Not least in the organisation and commitment to Church-sponsored undertakings which have always, whether directly or indirectly, the security of people at heart. For people in this category there is scope for still greater service to the good of the Church and society, if they are prepared to accept the challenge. Is it not better to attack than succumb to old age? Those who are at the extremity of life are the ones most abandoned since communication with loved ones is little or incoherent. The State has an obligation towards these. One wonders where the Gortonian insult of a 50-cent increase in old age pensions places the Federal Governments' assessment of the labour and work for the natiofi which old people have given? Our State Government has a better record only in so far as it has showed its willingness to support the provision of homes and places of comfort for the least secure of our population. The promises of longevity and a blessed iife here and hereafter as the Old Testament a ssures men of faith, for the Christian whose concept of charity and the dignity of the individual as a child of God, should spur him to greater awareness of the problems of the old and a more intense willingness to provide for those whom Scripture calls "the crown of a life well spent".

Australia's Mother Church During Pope Paul's visit to Sydney he will use St. Mary's Cathedral Church, Sydney, as the centre of official appearances and celebrations connected with his visit. A t the conclusion of his motorcade from Sydney Airport he will walk round the Cathedral outside to be seen by the thousands expected to welcome him. Then he will make his official entry into St. Mary's to be welcomed by Cardinal Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney, and clergy and religious from all over South-East Asia. He will celebrate Mass after his arrival and later will meet clergy and Hierarchy. Next day he will preside at the meeting of the Bishops of Oceania in the crypt of St. Mary's and study with them the immediate problems confronting the Church in this area. Prior to his departure on December 3, he will celebrate Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral for the Missions, and it is believed that he will then episcopally ordain the new Auxiliary Bishop of Port Moresby, Most Rev. L. Vangeke, M.S.C.
