BUDGET — POLITICIAN'S DREAM THE STATE BUDGET brought down in the Legislative Assembly by the Premier, Sir David Brand, is unexpectedly generous in contrast with its counterpart in Federal Parliament earlier this year. Sir David achieved the politician's dream of increasing expenditure and reducing taxation in the one year. Enhanced mining royalties and industrial expansion, for which the present Government is largely responsible, have boosted the State's revenue, which will increase by $41.7 million in spite of the lower level of taxation. This corresponds to approximately $40 per head of population, and will permit heavier spending on education and social benefits. It was all very impressive, but it would be still more so had it not been an election year. The higher spending on education will help those attending public schools. While this is not complete social justice, it should silence the critics of State aid to independent Nor have these been forgotten schools. entirely, since all will benefit from larger grants for libraries, physical education equipment and teaching aids. Censorship of literature has been proved dangerous in the past. Books by Hardy, Wilde, Shaw, Defoe and Joyce were suppressed but we now accept them as good literature. It is impossible to preserve public morals through censorship of books because literature is not a main source of moral contagion, and, as we have already discovered, the banning of a book stirs people's interest and they will use any means in order to obtain a copy. Is this because the inherent dislike of the voice of authority brings back memories of the days when parents used threats in order to make their children listen to the endless DONT'S? How thoughtful of them to make sure that as many as possible of our boys and girls would be able to read a filthy book! Have they ever heard of that `mill stone' they may carry as a result?

This week, I would like to discuss A dictionary definition nthusiasm. e is - eager interest or enthusiasm of z eal. Perhaps you have already met people whose enthusiasm is so evident and dynamic, that it overflows into your own life and causes you, t oo, to become enthusiastic. This is the kind of enthusiasm of which every Catholic Christian should be guilty. How many enthusiastic Catholics and Christians do you know? It's possible that you have been impressed by the enthusiasm o ther Christian denominations show for their rel igion. Surely, if you are sincere, then you should be enthusiastic about the most important aspect of your lives - Christ! People should not only be able to see Christ in your behaviour, but be able to come face to face with Him through your enthusiasm. Each one of us was made an apostle of Christ, and this is what he asks of us - that people should come to know him through us. As Emerson once said: "Nothing was ever achieved without enthusiasm."
