THE POPE SPEAKS ON DRUGS
POPE PAUL VI delivered a challenging address on drugs to the International Congress on Toxicology, which met in Rome early this month. He dealt with the question of his competence to speak with authority on this matter by indicating that it was the duty of the Pope to give assistance when scientific problems and undertakings touch on human life in its moral and spiritual aspects. Later, he outlined the magnitude of the problem and the destructive power drug taking has upon the whole person. He said the pharmacologist today must let his investigations range over an enormous field deepening ever in mind the innumerable needs of medical science and the pressing problems posed by pathology. He continued: "It is in this vast framework of questions and investigations that toxicology, a particularly important part of pharmacology finds its place. Precisely because of the great conquests attained in the most diverse sectors of the biological sciences and because of the growing knowledge of pharmaco-dynamic action on organisms it poses new questions today, questions which grow more numerous and difficult when they spring from the new branch, which is called psychopharmacology. "Then the questions become gnawing problems, not only for the scientist, who can never give up the dignity that is his as a man, since science must always be at the service of human society, but also for the doctor in the watchful solicitude which urges him to care f or his patient, urging him all the more if t he latter consents blindly to his sickness. "For our part, we cannot but encourage you to continue your studies and researches for the deeper understanding of truth and for the discovery of new pharmaceutical preparations capable of preventing or neutralising t he evil effects of toxic substances and providing doctors with new aids and new techniques of healing. In this context you could not avoid dealing with the grave problem of drugs, and have in fact done so to your praise. Allow us, therefore, to encourage you to devote every energy to your scientific researches in this sector, which are aimed a t discovering the biochemical mechanisms which injure the body and change and weaken the psyche, and at making ready new techniques capable at least of lessening their effects. "On the strength of the scientific knowledge you have acquired to date and to which your s tudies and experiments will yet bring you, you will moreover be able to make a valid denunciation of the often irreparable harm caused by the abuse of drugs, especially among the young, and for them the witness of science always has great value. "It is well known that recourse to drugs is the result of a series of very complex causes, which are of concern especially for parents and educators. But you too, gentlemen, have a task of primary importance. Let your voice be raised, loudly and authoritatively, to give an admonition springing from the knowledge and conscience of each one of you, as you work for the good of society against the harm which threatens youth, exposed to the danger of degradation in body, spirit and morals. It will be a warning for all those who, by natural vocation or by a mission undertaken with responsibility, are under obligation for the education of youth, a task which above all else is an activity of love and intelligence for the gradual attainment of true-mastery, that is to say, of the freedom of the children of God. " Your scientific contribution and your moral authority will moreover, where necessary, uphold and further encourage tie 7u1-)1: powers to carry on ceaselessly and with the appropriate means the struggle against drugs --against what must justly be considered one of the most baneful scourges of our times. You will thus be contributing to the health of the young generations, and it is on them that the hopes for a better future for all society in every field of civil life are founded."

LIMITED ISSUE. .. 2,500 SETS MAXIMUM EACH OF ONE 18 CARAT GOLD AND ONE STERLING SILVER MEDALLION MINTING BY. ... ROYAL AUSTRALIAN MINT, CANBERRA DESIGNED BY.... JAMES BERRY 0.B.E., F.R.N.S.
Pope Paul VI, the most travelled Pope in history, will soon arrive In Australia and will be the first Pope to ever visit our country. Pope Paul VI's visit Is creating tremendous interest and enthusiasm and unprecedented hotel and travel bookings have already been made. To commemorate the visit of Pope Paul Vi to Australia, special commemorative medallions will be minted.. In order to create a tribute as distinguished as the man it honours, a well known designer was engaged and a most striking design has been created. The designs are by world renowned coin and stamp designer, Mr James Berry, O.B.E. The obverse features His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, and the reverse f eatures his tiara in the centre, flanked on the right by his shield. The shield on the left shows the stars of the Australian flag. In low r elief at the back is a rosary in a circle. Beneath the tiara is a map of Australia with the year of the visit, 1970. The Reserve Bank of Australia has made available a special allocation of gold for this issue. The Commemorative medallions will be struck In a special limited edition by The Royal Australian Mint, Canberra. Each medallion will be individually hall marked and serially numbered to certify its status as part of this Registered, Limited Edition. Matthey Garrett (Pty.) Ltd., official refiner for the Commonwealth under the Banking Act, 1959, will issue a certificate guaranteeing the gold content and weight. Each gold medallion will bear the gold assay m ark of Matthey Garrett (Pty.) Ltd. as well. There is a limit of one gold and silver set per subscriber. Apart from 100 Palladium medallions and 500 silver medallions being minted to the same design for the U.S.A. market, no other versions of these medallions will ever be struck. On completion of the minting, dies will be permanently defaced. The design on both the gold and silver medallions is identical. The gold m edallion will be cased with the obverse to view and the silver with the reverse to view. This makes it unnecessary to remove the medallions f rom their case, thus ensuring that the proof mirror finish which will be o btained under first-class production conditions by Australia's Royal Mint is preserved.
There will be a maximum of 2,500 numbered sets each containing one gold and one silver medallion. They will be distributed in special velvet lined presentation cases. Each medallion will be serially numbered with the gold Nos. 1 to 2,500 and silver Nos. 1 to 3,000. The gold / inches in diameter and 4 medallions will be solid 18 carat gold, 11 weigh .75ozs troy. Dear Boys & Girls This is one of those days when I have an empty space where my brain ought to be and I just can't think what to discuss with you this week. Perhaps this is a good thing — we c an't be serious all the time. And even w hen we are serious, it is wise to make our very seriousness light-hearted and happy with a laugh or a smile. In fact, I think we could make this ur o topic — the value of smiling, laughter, a happy face and a cheerful nature. E veryone has met grumpy, unhappy, complaining people. It is extremely hard to like these people, or to seek their company, though we ought to try. As Christians, we have the very best r eason in the world for being happy, and we should show this outwardly by our pleasant disposition.

People who know us ought to be able to ask just what it is that makes us so happy. They should see in us a quality that is unique and should wish * WEDNESDAY 30 to possess this quality for themselves. SEPTEMBER Bryan Bannon, YanNo-one is likely to see this quality if we are often grumbling, arguing, or c omplaining, or if we are never cheerful or smiling. So boys and girls, remember, as C hristians, to let your joy in Christ shine out of your face and in your manner, so that other people will see Him in you. God bless you all. BROTHER JUNIPER.
