TEA-SIPPING MATRONSOR WORKERS? by Mrs. Rita Green, International Secretary, Catholic Women's League of W.A. Early this century, the influence of women on social and civic life was becoming evident. In several countries, Catholic Women's Organisations were active at local levels. At the same time, thinking Christians were becoming aware that international problems had moral and social consequences. Women of vision, from several countries, gathering in Paris in 1910, decided to federate their national groups, and thus was born the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisation, a body sufficiently comprehensive to ensure its voice would be heard in the world. In a reply to World Union's telegram to the Holy Father expressing delight and excitement at the proclamation, the following was received from the Secretary of State: "From Vatican. Killowen, the old house that became the Sisters' first hospital here, is still the centre of the complex. Here you can see the old linking with the new. This is a link between the old and new theatres.
In addition to the new main block, a remote boiler house has been built. The plant here consists of two 150 h.p. steam boilers and a stand-by 25 h.p. package steam boiler, giving a total amount of 10,000 lbs. of steam per hour. It also accommo. dates a gas fired incinerator and the auxiliary diesel stand-by power plant.

K ILLOWEN BOUGHT It was she at the urging of the late Archbishop Prendiville, who purchased the `Killowen' property said to contain a greater range of shrubs trees, plants and greenery than any other garden in Australia. It had been looked after by an expert landscape gardener from Kew Gardens, London. That. was in 1935. In response to the wishes of the Holy See "that new congregations be founded to devote themselves to the care of mothers and infants", the opening of the Nursing Home took place in 1937. WISH REALISED In 1941, it became imperative to extend and, in spite of wartime difficulty, a wing was added to the main building. In 1955, with the acquisition of adjoining property, the Sisters had their own Convent and Chapel. In November 1955, Mother Brigid went to her reward with the greater part of her dream for St. Anne's realised. Three years later, the Maternity Hospital was added and now, with the opening of the General Hospital, her vision of the 'new Killowen', as she called it, is c omplete.

In August 1845, exactly 12 years after the foundation of the Congregation, the newly-consecrated Bishop of Perth, the Most Rev. Dr. Brady, called at Baggot Convent requesting Sisters for his distant mission. His Lordship pleaded his cause so well that the sympathy of the Community was captured. A pressing invitation to return to the Mother House was refused. The passage money forwarded was put into a building fund. Even two years after the Sisters refused to return home, there were but 306 Catholics in the whole of Western Australia. These were scattered over hundreds of square miles. In Perth itself, the Catholic community did not number 90. Only the utmost selfsacrifice on the pc -t of all concerned could have wrested even the promise of a harvest from a soil so sterile. Yet the thing was done. The Church did take root. SISTER DIES When May came that first year, the Bishop was absent. The Sisters conducted May devotions which attracted women, children and finally, men. Soon, the adults were asking to be prepared for the Sacraments. When the Bishop returned at the end of May, he found it necessary to sit for hours daily in the Convent Chapel, hearing Confessions. On the Feast of the Assumption, 50 adults received Holy Communion — some for the first time, others after an absence of 23 years or more. Twenty children made their First Communion at the Midnight Mass of 1846. While the Sisters were busy planting the seeds of the faith, one of their members was slowly dying. Mother M. Catherine Gogarty went to her reward at the early age of 29 on July 30, 1846. She rests with nine other pioneer Sisters in the grounds Victoria at Square under the stone slab surmounted by the statue of St. Michael. The first Aboriginal girl, aged six years, was brought to the Sisters by Father Salvado. The last of her tribe, she was about to be burnt when that intrepid Missionary, in one of his journeys to Perth, rescued her, clothed her in a dress made out of two large handkerchiefs, and carried her to Perth to the Sisters. She was baptised "Mary Christian". Before 1853, a cottage for native girls was built—then began a period of loving dedication to the care of the native children. Writing to the London Methodist Headquarters on June 22, 1855, the Rev. Samuel Hardey commented: "The complete abandonment of the Native Department (Methodist) and the breaking up of all religious education by us has been doomed . . . not one of them (the natives) is now seen to frequent any place of worship except the Romanist Continued on PAGE 11
