BISHOPS' DECISIONS One of the twice-yearly meetings of the Australian Episcopal Conference was held last week in Sydney. Joining the 34 bishops from all over Australia were three visiting bishops from New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and Papua-New Guinea. Cardinal Gilroy presided at the Conference held at St. Paul's National Seminary for Late Vocations at Kensington. In order to collaborate more closely in the spirit of episcopal collegiality, the bishops of Japan, India and the Philippines were in communication with the bishops' conference of Australia. On the first day of the conference, the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Gino Paro, who will have the Pope in residence at the Apostolic Delegation on the occasion of the Pope's visit, addressed the conference on the coming Of the Pope to Australia. He spoke of the enthusiastic response from all sections of the community to the publication of the news of the Papal visit. Archbishop Paro also spoke of the importance of work for youth in Australia. The bishops met with the representatives of religious orders of priests and discussed with them their apostolate in Catholic education, in youth work, in parish missions and in retreats to priests, nuns, brothers and the laity. In other decisions, the Bishops' Conference: • Nominated Bishop J. Freeman of Armidale as a correspondent member of a commission concerning catechists; • Suggested a number of topics for the 1971 World Synod of Bishops in Rome; these suggestions will be referred to the Holy See. The Bishops also discussed at length the Senates of Priests, which bishops of various dioceses have set up to give all priests a voice in the pastoral care of the people. Bishop Kelly said the Bishops wanted to ensure adequate representation of priests on the senates and to make certain that all priests have a voice in electing or appointing members of senates. He said they believed senates of priests would give them ever-increasing and effective assistance in the government of their dioceses. Archbishop Knox, of Melbourne, outlined to the bishops the preparations that have been made for the 40th International Eucharistic Congress in Melbourne on February 18-25, 1973. He requested each bishop to nominate a priest to co-ordinate in his diocese the pastoral renewal programmes to be launched on a nation-wide basis in preparation for the Congress. ( Other decisions arrived at during the Conference are reported on this page.]

SOFT DRUGS
YCW
By Provaco Everyone knows about the 'hard' drugs. School chlidren are given lectures about them. We are shown interviews on television and the newspapers have daily items about drugs, addicts and peddlars but very little is said or written about the soft drugs; the sedatives, the analgesics and the barbiturates. RELAXING DRUGS These drugs are readily available and it isn't necessary to supply a prescription. Women form the biggest group of users of these relaxing drugs and doctors say that patients who have become dependent on them are very difficult to treat. The addicts are usually tense and can't settle down to work or to anything, even for a short period.

The Australian Catholic Girls' Basketball Association Carnival was officially opened by His Grace, the Archbishop, on Sunday at Matthews Basketball Centre, Floreat Park. The four teams participating in the carnival are Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia. Off to a good start, Victoria beat Western Australia in its first game. Showing great improvement, New South Wales, competing for the second time, defeated the strong South Australia side. The Carnival continues during this week and concludes on Saturday, September 5, with a dinner and presentation of trophies at the Freeway Hotel. Interstate teams return home on Monday.
BARBITURATES A grim warning—given through a British government publication—has been issued about the use of Barbiturates in Britain. Barbiturates, as you know, are sedatives and at least 15 million prescriptions for these drugs have been issued in one year. The report also says: "Barbiturates cause more K ALGOORLIE.—Since it was decided in April deaths than any other solid or liquid poison sold t hat a Young Christian Students' Movement be in the country." I MUST TAKE AN ASPIRIN Australians lead the world in the intake of aspirins and also in the incidence of kidney disease which is caused by the continual use of this drug. Children from babyhood (many mothers give their t wo-year old infants aspirin) are given something whenever they complain of pain and as they get older, when they feel that a headache is 'coming on'. These mothers act through ignorance but there is no excuse for the modern young mother who gives her baby a 'mild' sleeping tablet so that with her husband she can enjoy a party without the fear of interruption by a baby's cries. This habit is growing rapidly and is the 'done thing' to quote a bright young mother! A VICIOUS CIRCLE Aspirin has been called the Great Enigma of the drug world because it causes as well as relieves. Aspirins can cause headaches, so what happens when you take one to cure your headache? You get relief but later on you have to take another aspirin to relieve the headache caused by the aspirin you took to cure your headache!! Are you a soft drug addict? If you are you can prevent your children from following in your footsteps.
