STATEMENT ON DRUGS!

The Vatican has created a special dossier and observers believe Pope Paul VI will make a major statement on the abuse of drugs. Pope Paul is keeping himself well informed on the use and abuse of drugs. I A special desk in the Vatican secretariat of state has been created to compile documentation on the worldwide drug problem. A lthough Pope Paul has briefly alluded to drugs , in recent speeches, he has not devoted an entire t talk to the issue as he has, for example, on the Ispread of pa 1 ography and sexual perversions. It is not certain that the Pope is preparing a major s tatement on drugs, but his intense study of the problem points to that possibility. At least,_ no one in the Vatican is discounting the emergence of some major statement.

Cathedral Group Booming St. Mary's Cathedral YCW club, just over 14 months old, has come to life with its recent Miss YCW Queen Quest. Recent dances held to raise money have also been very successful. The club's most recent event was a wel l organised car rally, handled in cavalier fashion by Charles Farano and John Lucas. All credit must go to these members for the dedication and determination for the success shown. Sub-committees have been formed to run various, activities, which take much pressure off hard working president Brendan Jenkinson. All sub-committeemen work hard at all jobs posted their way and credit is due. The girls' group is currently also working with great enthusiasm, not only for its, entrant's sake, but also for the Cathedral Club. Juliet, our nominee (you will al l know her when she wins), has the girls combining wel l and their efforts are of alturistic standards. So keep reading "The Record" and I shal l keep you posted on W.A.'s most progressive club, Cathedral.

HOLIDAYS

Out and about with the . . .

YCW

By Provaco For two weeks, thousands of young West Australians will enjoy holidays, even those who have to face Junior and Leaving exams soon after they return to school. How are you going to spend your leisure time during the two weeks? Of course, you have planned to spend some time enjoying outdoor activities such as swimming (too cold?), walking, games, anything that will give you time in the fresh air after the months of hours spent in school. Many of you have made plans but here is a suggestion which may startle you: Will you sacrifice one day of those precious 14 for someone else?

LONELY, SICK OR OLD? In every suburb there are old people who are lonely or sick or crippled with arthritis. You must know of some old man or woman who lives alone and seldom has anyone to visit them. Now, don't give that old excuse: "I can't approach people who are practically strangers. What would they think if I 'barged' into their homes? They would welcome you with open arms because the greatest lovers of young people are the really old men and women. What about old Mrs. Jones? You have seen her hobbling down to the shop once a week and you know that she lives alone. Well, knock on her door and tell her that you have holidays and would like to do something for her, maybe mow her lawn, mend a broken fence, clean her house, do something for her. You have seen that old chap tapping his stick along your street. His white stick tells you he is nearly blind and you know the only one who visits him is his son who comes to Perth three times a year. He may long for someone to read to him. Ask him. WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR? Your neighbour isn't just the person who lives next door but everyone, particularly those who need help. We are all familiar with the story of the crafty lawyer who tried to confound Christ when he asked him which was the greatest commandment and Christ's reply: "The first is to love God and the second is to love your neighbour as yourself." And we all know how much we love ourselves!
