NEW YORK. -- Newspaper editorial comment throughout the nation has been overwhelmingly in favour of the U.S. selling planes to Israel, according to an American Jewish Committee survey. A study of 55 newspapers in 36 cities revealed that 41 of the papers either directly or indirectly called for sale of the jets to Israel in the wake of recent Soviet incursions in the Middle East. AJC President Philip E. Hoffman said the survey demonstrated that "a large majority of the American people understand the threat that increased Soviet involvement poses for vital American interests and Israel's security." He said the newspapers surveyed represented both Republican viewand Democratic points, hawk and dove attitudes towards Vietnam, rich and poor communities. of sale Favouring planes were such metropolitan papers as the New York Daily News, the Los Angeles Times and the Atlanta Constitution. SALFORD, England: Since the Second Vatican Council, some Catholics have felt that the winds of change have been blowing with hurricane force. In Britain, this has been only too apparent in education. For many, certainty has given way to doubt with the disappearance of the old-style catechism, which most regarded almost as immutable as the faith itself. Today, Catholic teachers find themselves in the somewhat embarrassing position of having to seek TFuidance about official attitudes and interpretations on such topics as iriginal sin redemption and hell. Simultaneously, attention has been focussed on the methods of religious education and even on the aims of those engaged in such work. Until a decade ago, most teachers in Britain accepted that they had to give religious lessons. In fact, the policy generally was to avoid the specialist teacher in this subject. Every Catholic, who had been through a teacher-training college or university, was considered capable of teaching religion classes. In high schools, every other subject was in the hands of specialists, but religion classes were left to anybody. In recent years, more and more teachers have expressed their dislike of teaching religious lessons. Many cite their own uncertainty in this field as an excuse. Others state quite openly that they no longer know what they are expected to teach. In an attempt to provide guidelines in this bewildering situation, many bishops have estabilshed catechetical centres in their dioceses. These vary according to local needs and the approach of the priest in charge. But their existence is evidence_ that the bishops , are not unaware of the serious nature of the problems facing those engaged in religious education at all levels. Bishop Thomas Holland, of Salford, referred to these headaches at the opening of the Salford Diocesan Catechetical Centre. The past method of presenting the faith, he said, did not meet the new psychological insights that have been acquired through the extension and deepening of knowledge. The older methods, he added, also did not meet what had been validly discovered in the science of pedagogy. To date, more than 700 teachers from all parts of the diocese have attended short theology courses ar-

Obituary A TRIBUTE TO MOTHER MARY AIDAN PARKER By Mary Durack. The death occurred on Monday, June 29, at St. John of God Hospital, of Mother Mary Aidan Parker, of Loreto Convent, Swanbourne. Ninetyfour years old and lucid to the end, Mother Aidan's life was closely linked with the history of her Order in Australia, a record of which she was writing up to the time of her last illness. Born in 1876, the daughter of James and Bridgit Parker, who owned a farm at Oyle Gate between Enniscorthy and Wexford, Mother Aidan was educated at the famous Bar Convent in Yorkshire. She came to Australia in 1900 and entered Loreto Convent Mary's Mount, Ballarat, in December of that year. During her long teaching life, this devoted nun exercised a lively influence on her pupils and infused them with at least something of her own vital interest in our cultural heritage. Her enthusiasm was especially directed to the visual and performing arts she saw always as windows to the universal truth that is the endless quest of creative genius. My own memories of this remarkable nun go back to the 1920s. She was then teaching at the convent in Adelaide Terrace, the now busy commercial thoroughfare that was then a relatively quiet residential area. I recall, with great clarity, the zealous enthusiasm with which she wove around the epistles of St. Paul an unforgettable picture of his life and times. It was typical of her approach to teaching that she presented her subjects always in the round and the preparation that must have gone into her lessons I came later to appreciate. In after years at Webster Street, Nedlands, and also at Swanbourne, she taught my own girls and, for two of them, was largely responsible for awakening the interest to take up artistic careers. The friendship between us, begun in my early teens, continued throughout the years, but especially were we drawn together through her intense interest in local history. Latterly, she completed the translation from the French of the journals of the Benedictine pioneer missionary, Bishop Salvado, of New Norcia. A section of this appeared in "The Record" some years ago and the completed work is shortly to be published in book form by the University Press of Western Australia.
