LET THE HEAD RULE NOT THE HEART
The realm of value lies outside the scope of science, and because this is so many modern thinkers insist that it is outside the scope of intelligence, too. According to one of them, "the wise man follows his heart and does not trust his head," when the greatest affairs of life have to be decided, and he commends this method to every man no matter how powerful his intellect. There is a certain amount of real merit in this advice, but it can still be misleading. The good and desirable is not disclosed to us human beings as a 'term of thought' after a process of dispassionate investigation. We reach it by way of personal experience, with its stresses and strains. It is, we say, worth fighting for. It heals and fulfils our lives. It is God's reply to a prayer, not to a curious query. But this is by no means all. Certainly, the heart lights up a problem in the realm of good and evil. But can we rely on the promptings of the heart alone? The heart may have reasons of which reason knows nothing. . . But are they sufficient reasons? When we consider the destructive decisions it has often been invoked to justify, one cannot avoid a doubt whether personal emotion is a reliable basis for determining the goal of life. The present spate of protest marches, moratorium displays, abortion agitation and now the call for euthanasia and legalising of homosexual relations fall within this latter sphere. Without even considering the moral aspects, not enough constructive thought has been done about these matters generally. Many of them are covers for deeper and more sinister things. Let the heart bleed for My Lai and ignore the atrocities of Phu Thanh and only confusion results, certainly not the common good. Ignore the findings of history and its consequences, and chaos and anarchy will follow. This was the lesson to be learned from Sukarno's idiotic and obsessionist 'confrontation' policy in Indonesia. The trouble is that the heart leads in many different directions at once. Some push him towards the fulfilment of his individual well being. Others, deeper down, impel him to love of his neighbour, as necessary to his higher fulfilment by sacrificing his ego. Finally, there is the deepest feeling of all: the thoughtful man's sense that he is made of God's image. akin to Being itself, and that he ought to live in Its light and promote Its rule and law. The heart yearns for a thousand things . . . for material ease and pleasure, for the healing and joy of love, for the delight of ordered thought and the exhiliration of creative art, and for "that peace of God which surpasses understanding"! But if the means of discernment are lacking, these varied longings simply tear apart. They must be integrated into a systematic whole. It is not the force of feeling which counts but how it is interpreted . . . its meaning for the whole man. This is the task of reason. We consider that this is the fundamental weakness in modern life. Too much heat is being generated on current issues and too little thought has been done as to how current problems can be constructively overcome to the benefit and sanity of society. Matters of censorship, pollution protest and counter-protest, abortion and permissiveness are not matters to be decided by emotion, though highly charged with such they seem. During the recent debate on abortion in the Legislative Assembly, it was stated that a highly organised opposition led to the defeat of the Bill. If this is so, and we do not think it is, that same group should not rest on its laurels, but should seek to educate others in the horror and gruesome, gory facts of abortion itself. The same applies to any of the matters raised above. The same is true of religious conviction and practice. These are matters for the head and not just the heart .

For some time we have resisted the urge to the cost of The Record to 10 cents ncrease i per copy. The ever-increasing wage demands a nd the consequent rise in costs of materials a nd production make it now imperative that we raise our price to 10 cents. This price increase will be operative from Thursday, July 2. Most Catholic papers in the Eastern States have raised their price to 15 cents. For the t ime-being, at any rate, such a raise is not envisaged by The Record management.

Children's World
Dear Boys & Girls This week, on June 29, the C hurch celebrates the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the apostles, two Saints whose names you should all know very well. Saint Peter was chosen by Christ to be the very first Pope, when Christ said to him: "Thou art Peter and upon this rock I wil l build my Church, and I wil l give to you the k eys of the kingdom of heaven." W hen Christ came on earth, Peter was a simple fisherman, but he was generous and honest and k ind, and he became great friends with Jesus. E ven Peter was tempted, just as you and I are, during his l ife, and he sinned by denying Christ three t imes. Afterwards, he was extremely sorry and Jesus forgave him. A fter Christ's resurrection, Peter w ent to Rome and converted many pagans. And it was there, during the Roman persecution, that Peter was crucified. St. Paul, on the other hand, had persecuted the Christians for a long time before he became converted to C hrist's way of l ife. After his conversion, he preached Christ's message to the people and never failed in his love for Jesus. Paul, too, died during the Roman persecution. What can we learn from the example of these two famous saints? Firstly, that saints are not born saints. They have to work at it. We cilould remember that, just as Peter was chosen, so we, to, are cal led to be 'fishers of men.' Secondly, we shouldn't let our wrong-doings, mistakes or sins, get us down. We should be sorry for them, apologise to God, and then carry on as though we had not sinned at all, while remembering to make a greater effort to overcome our faults. God bless you all, BROTHER JUNIPER MININAKIVNI.#4,111.04^4, 11141PO4,04NIPAP#4.4.####.
