BONN, Germany.—A limitation on the admission of new students for the priesthood is the latest in a series of curbs being imposed on the Church in Czechoslovakia, according to reports received here. An additional restriction dealing with religious instruction is in preparation. The restriction on seminarians was decreed by the church affairs office of the ministry of culture, headed by Karel Hruza. It has to do with the admission of new students into the Olamouc branch of the Theological Faculty of Litomerice. It restores the regulation in force during the old Stalinist-line regime of Antonin Novotny, vkinieb each year limited the number of students permitted t o begin theological studies. This was abolished in 1968 by the Alexander Dub. cek government as part of a more liberal Church and national affairs policy. As a result of the relaxation, the number of students beginning theological studies at Litomerice increased so rapidly that the seminary ran out of accommodation. To meet the problem the archdiocese of Olomouc, which was forced to close its seminary in 1950 because of financial difficulties, obtained permission in 1968 to open a branch of the Litomerice seminary, In the first and second semesters of the new seminary, more than 70 students began their theology studies and by the fall of 1969 this number had reached 100. Church authorities in Czechoslovakia are seeking to have the government's order on the seminarians withdrawn, but in a meeting with Hruza they derived little hope that the government would relent. In Czechoslovakia, as in other communist countries of eastern Europe, religious instruction is banned from the state schools. Under Dubcek, the religious affairs office, headed then by Mrs. Erika Kadlecova, relaxed the conditions under which Czechoslovakian children could receive religious instruction. Included was permission to use public school rooms for religious instruction in cases in which it was impossible to utilise parish rectories for that purpose. The church affairs office now proposes to issue a ban on the use of classrooms in state schools for religious training. If it is ordered, parishes will en counter considerable difficulty in handling religiow classes in rectories because of the large increase it the number of children attending religious instruo tion since late 1968.
