DEATH OF PROMINENT PERTH CITIZEN The death of Mr. Tom Ahern, Knight of Saint Sylvester and outstanding Perth businessman, marked the passing of one who was revered for generosity and respected for his business acumen. Mr. Ahern came to Australia at the turn of the century with a determination to succeed and a great spirit of faith in the future. These two virtues were to characterise all his efforts, both at spiritual and materials levels throughout his busy, dedicated life in this State. Pope Pius XI acknowledged his enormous generosity and concern for the advancement of the Church's work in its manifold undertakings in W.A. when he dubbed him a Knight of Saint Sylvester in 1927. For the following 40 years, he was a prominent figure at all Church and civic functions. Indeed the Church in Western Australia owes much to Mr. Ahern. His advice was respected by three archbishops, and was eagerly sought by many religious superiors about to embark on projects of development and extension. His generosity, too, helped many in need and was not in any way restricted to creed or colour. His strong character and deep moral rectitude were the products of a faith which meant much to him and which did much to mark him as a committed Christian. The commercial world, too, hails him as one of the great commercial pioneers of the State. He was a valued and respected member of the Perth Chamber of Commerce, who rose from humble beginnings to a position of great prominence in the business world. His interests were many and varied, and all avenues of commercial life in the city benefited by his wisdom and genius. The State is all the poorer by his death. His name will be long remembered by all who had the happiness of meeting him and his generosity is appreciated by all who experienced it.

APARTHEID IN SPORT The decision of the British Cricket Council to call off the South African tour of Britain this summer will find ready response and sympathy in the hearts of true sportsmen. For years we have heard sport heralded as a unifying force in the world. We have heard its many good attributes applauded and, in some more irresponsible places, it was even hinted that it might replace religion as a bond of Unity and a force for good. A sad blow has been dealt to this myth. Today sport is another means of indicating national superiority and enhancing international prestige. Divorcing sport from its true concept of providing challenge, personal development, recreation, dedication and valour, and replacing it by considering it an instrument of political pressure has not done any good for man, but would seem to be but another vehicle for expressing his antagonism and aggressiveness, which mock the very name of sport. With South Africa, sport is inseparable from political aspirations and perpetuates racialist policies. The Council decision has been effective even there by its own prominent sportsmen advocating non-racism in sport. The political overtones of the decision, and the pressure exerted by the Home Secretary, make the cancellation of the tour more susThe Council pect and less spontaneous. procrastinated and felt that the glory of cricket would be enhanced by permitting the tour to proceed. It is difficult to see how this could have happened with the situation developing as it was in Britain. If the Home Secretary's intervention was motivated by the Government's desire to keep order and, at the same time, to repudiate South Africa's desire to bolster racial policies, then again all sportsmen will congratulate them. The decision was thus not a victory for lawlessness or a reward for violence. The same decision will have to be faced by Australia sooner or later. It will have to make a deliberate choice between standing with or against South Africa on the single race issue. Our bet is that it will procrastinate and seek to turn the blind eye to its white" policy, thus further destroyown ing its bona fides abroad on racial matters.

SCIENTISTS INVITED TO STUDY F ATIMA APPARITIONS WASHINGTON, N.J., U.S.A. A group of scientists and science editors are being invited to a Miracle Seminar for Scientists this summer at Fatima, Portugal, to study at first hand the circumstances surrounding the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin reported there 52 years ago by three peasant children. The seminar will be sponsored by the Blue Army, a U.S. organisation dedicated to promoting devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. The U.S. office of the Blue Army here, and its international centre at the Fatima shrine, will pay the expenses of most of the scientists who attend the seminar on July 13. At the seminar, the scientists will meet persons who claim they witnessed apparitions of the Blessed Virgin at Fatima between May and October, 1917, first reported by the three Portuguese children. The only living member of the trio of children is Sister Lucy, a Carmelite nun. In a book, "Meet the Witnesses," Blue Army official John Haffert reported interviews with more than 100 persons who claim to have seen the apparitions.

Vocations Continue To Rise In Poland WARSAW, Poland.—Vocations to the priesthood continue to rise in Poland. So far this year, 743 students have been enrolled in diocesan seminaries. New enrolments in 1969 totalled 706. Presently, there are 3,327 students of therilogy in the diocesan seminaries and 998 candidates for the priesthood in religious orders. Among the orders, the Salesians show the greatest growth with 102 seminarians. There are 385 seminarians in military service.
