POPE PAUL'S GOLDEN JUBILEE

On May 29 Pope Paul VI will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his ordination. The son of a journalist Father Montini on the eve of his ordination wrote an article which in the light of subsequent history disclosed ideals which were to guide his whole priestly activity. He voiced the opinion that "If every Catholic were literate and politically mature, there would be no need of a distinctly Catholic Party in Parliament". His years as chaplain to the university students at Rome, combined with his period buried in the Vatican State Secretariate as a clerk, deepened his conviction that violence in politics was degrading, that peace must be our greatest concern, and that an informed laity conscious of their dignity sharing in the priesthood of Christ by their Baptism, must be the arms and sinews of the twentieth century apostolic mission of the Church. These ideas ring even more true and modern when Montini was moved to Milan to do battle with a city engulfed in industrial Never unrest and Communist subversion. for a momet did he waver but, just as he w as to do years later as Pope, he acknowledged the shortcomings of Christians in catering for the needs of workers. he set to work to rebuild and expand the Church in Milan, with, indeed, a great deal of success. Another would have found it a frustrating job following a Pope like Pope John whose bonhomie and paternal image won the hearts of millions. Not Pope Paul VI. His choice of name indicated his apostolic thrust and dedication. Like St. Paul he undertook missionary journeys in the cause of peace, goodwill, ecumenism and apostolic concern. "The jet-age Pope", though greeted as a Hamlet initially, has confounded his critics by a greater degree of resolution and clarity than the Prince of Denmark. His solemn undertaking to continue the Vatican Council and his resolve to implement its decisions will stamp him as one of the 'Great PostCouncil Popes'. His strength lies in his ability to listen and encourage dialogue on the things of the Church. His Jubilee should offer all an opportunity to pray for him in his arduous mission. It will also give priests an occasion to rally loyally to the standard of Peter still aloft in spite of many vicissitudes.

REJECTION Of THE ABORTION BILL

We feel we must pay tribute to the sincere and serious approach to the Termination of Pregnancy Bill which was shown by our Parliamentarians last week. Not only was the Bill rejected decisively but the debate revealed a great deal of work that had gone on behind the scenes and the serious rationalisation of the case by Members of the Assembly be they for or against. Members of Parliament, we congratulate you on your sense of responsibility to Western Australia. Indeed your action may well be a guideline to other States confronted with such Private Members' Bills. The current danger may be twofold for opponents of the Bill. They may think that this is the end of the road. In fact, it may well prove to be the end of the beginning, if one is to analyse the storm of dissaproval by the ALRA which greeted the rejection of the Bill. Further we are in danger of underestimating the power of our protest. No Member of Parliament can choose to ignore organised petitions and the body of opinion they represent. This was evident in the whole debate which paid serious attention to the letter signed by 160 medical doctors. The future may be decisive for those who seek to protect the life of the unborn. They must endeavour to understand more the nature of abortion that they may more readily help those in need. They must seek by representation and negotiation to improve family benefits and social helps, remembering however, that the countries which have the highest degree of such benefits, Britain and Sweden, have also the highest rates of abortion. No one can ignore the decision of Parliament, much less can they wipe it off as a minority group foisting its views on the majority. To say that one represents a majority view is trite. The facts do not prove it end neither do surveys, particularly those conducted in Abortion on Floreat Park and Subiaco. demand, as the aftermath of Bill showed, is the last resort of those cases where contraception has failed. Be it to the honour of the West Australian Parliament that it rejected the Abortion Bill. With this decision we most heartily concur.

Dialogue Retreat The first of the new dialogue retreats took place recently at the Benedictine Abbey, New Norcia. The retreatants became temporary members of the monastic community, joining the monks in reciting the Divine Office, even Vigils and Lauds at five o'clock in the morning, and taking their meals in the refectory. The numerous discussions bro-ight a lively exchange of ideas between the monks and the laymen.

such as the reaction of the laity to the new liturgy, and sometimes it was free, ranging from the Crusades to the Abortion Bill.

Periods were set aside so that retreatants could `lave long, private talks with a monk. Limited as they are to small groups, and with several monks impow, taking part, retreatants Sometimes the discus- get generous help in their sion was set to one topic spiritual life.

Courtesy is an extension of Charity and therefore a Christian virtue. The simple word "courtesy" once written is for some people a weak word, an overgentle idea vaguely synonymous with a dandy, but of all the excuses made for lack of courtesy that is least reasonable and least important. To say that courtesy is a Christian virtue is not to say that a pagan is never polite, but the politeness of a pagan is subservience in the presence of superior persons. Pagan politeness is never experienced by those inferior in rank, wealth or social position. Pagan politeness is expedient and diplomatic. Christian politeness is different because it is done for love of neighbour and love of God. A polite Christian is polite to a beggar as well as a king. It is a way of acting which God has commanded of all His children. Courtesy is Charity, a love of God and of neighbour. There is nothing weak about any virtue. There is certainly nothing weak about Courtesy, which requires control, intelligence and humility.:

GERMANS GIVE $13.5 MILLION

ESSEN, Germany—German Catholics contributed a record £13.5 million in 1969 for aid to the Church in Latin America. The figure was announced at a meeting here of the steering committee of Adveniat, the German Catholic aid agency for the Church in Latin America. Most of the money was collected at Christmas midnight Masses last December.

FATHER McKENZIE TO LEAVE JESUITS

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (USA)—Father John L. McKenzie, S.J., noted scripture scholar and a member of the theology department of Notre Dame University here, has announced he will leave the Jesuit Order to become a diocesan priest. A Jesuit for 41 years, Father McKenzie told NC News his move did not mean he was having second thoughts about the priesthood, but only his membership of the Society of Jesus. Father McKenzie said he had not lived in a Jesuit community since 1965, when he left Loyola University in Chicago. He plans to leave Notre Dame, where he has taught for four years, this fall, to take a similar post at De Paul University in Chicago. He had applied for release from the Jesuit order five years ago, but his request went unanswered. He received a letter from Father Pedro ArruPe, S.J., general of the order in Rome, criticising his comments in the September-October issue of 'Critic' magazine. Father McKenzie had criticised Pope Paul's statement attributing a decline in religious vocations partly to a desire for soft living. The outspoken author of such scholarly works as "Dictionary of the Bible" and "The ROMill Catholic Church," stressed he was "not leaving the Jesuits for an article on the papal limousine." Hi said his decision was the result of "a gradual ent rangement".

A new S35,000 hostel for overseas students — to be known as "International House" — will be opened shortly at Nedlands. It will house only 15 students, but it is hoped it will be a forerunner of many more. It has been built by Home the Methodist Missions Department. There is an urgent need for furnishings, and the executive of the CoCommittee ordinating for Overseas Students is backing an appeal in this direction.

Pope Paul said that "the crosses which are inflicted on the Church from within its communion and which offend and torture this communion are no less crude and pernicious than those inflicted from the outside. "The bitterest sorrow for the heart of a mother is the sorrow that is caused her by a son." Nevertheless, the Pope added, there is also great consolation to be found in "the silent patience of many humble, courageous and faithful souls who accept and share the sorrows of the Church. "There is no greater consolation for the heart of a mother than the strong and delicate consolation offered by her sincere sons."

The old boys of St. Ildephonsus' College will be interested to knoW that another "reunion" is Mrs. Ida Watson and Mrs. Veronica Dempster, with Mr. Len O'Grady and Mr. Charles Tuffin showing to be held from May 30, some of the occupational therapy work. 31 and June 1. and Bill Kinshela Johnny Sheiles have got YOUTH CONCERT REVIEW: together and made al' rangements with Father Justin for a great weekend of revisiting.
