FACING FACTS FEW WILL REGRET THE SEARCH FOR HONESTY and genuineness of life that marks the efforts of today's young and not-so-young. There can be fewer more humiliating experiences for the human person than to be revealed as one who pretends or deceives. That mankind has been revelling in such deception for far too long has been the hurtful revelation of the hippies and their ill. The Church, as part of the world and more so because of the frightening invitation of Pope John to lay bare its soul, is suffering acutely from this comparatively recent phenomenon. Those credited with the highest quota of integrity and honesty are very often those who are first to defect from the organised Church. Sympathy is rampant for those in revolt against the established order and the silent, "sheepish many" who will have no truck with revolution and violence are seen as dishonest, cowardly or just plain stupid. One particular scholar has referred to church defections as a massive brain-drain. Human integrity forces a man to spell out those things that go to make his real experiences. Anything outside the 'experienced', for which one cannot give adequate reasons, is to that extent pretence and fraud. But, despite the exhortation of St. Paul, to "give reasons for the faith that is in you", the man of faith will never be spared the embarrassment of finding words inadequate for the truth as he ought to see it. How does one convey the experience of the secret of Easter, of the fact that Christ descended into the dark regions of this earth of infinite promise and frustrating inadequacy to satisfy and to take it up to himself? One does not. Because one does not experience it. One accepts it in faith. This is finally what counts and the type of 'witness' men want. This is what is uniquely Christian. Christian honesty must always contend with that which will not be contained in mere experience as the purely human demands. It must grapple with the ever-present phenomenon of the prejudice of faith essentially contained in the acceptance of the fact that Christ is Risen. And with the fact of the resurrection, go the many other truths of the Gospel, whose real meaning will continue to elude us, will resist justification, but will nonetheless be part and parcel of that peculiar honesty which is at once the hope and 'folly' of the man of faith.

RECORD

In recent television discussions and in the local press it has been put forward that the Catholic Church has accepted and permitted abortion until 1869. Many letters have been received from people concerned about this allegation. The teachings of the Catholic Church admit of no doubt on this subject. Specific cases considered by the Holy Office as it was then, condemned abortion by name in 1889. The teaching authority of the Church has never wavered in its condemnation of this crime. The early Christians and their apologists Athenagoras and Tertullian are the first on record for condemning abortion. In the fourth century the Council of Eliberis condemned it, as also did the subsequent Sixth Ecumenical Council of the Church in 680 A.D. At no time has it altered this. in fact its position has been confirmed by the findings of medical science. Our opposition to the Termination of Pregnancy Bill now in the Legislative Assembly, remains adamant that this is no solution to the medical, social and psychological problems of the expectant mother. We maintain that greater social security, larger family benefits and a more equitable child endowment scheme will produce a situation where the mother can give birth to her child and give it the necessary love and attention it requires. Australia needs people. It would be insane to liberalise abortion laws while this need remains unfulfilled. We see abortion as an assault on the human being and life at its most vulnerable stage. We admit that abortions occur and will continue to be performed illegally, but we also state that the present law provides adequate sanctions and protection against this crime. No nation can be built upon the blood of innocent children. We commend the Australian Labour Party, under the leadership of Mr. W. F. Willesee, M.L.C., for their concerted efforts in defence of human life in the Legislative Council. Indeed for a Private Members' Bill the voting appeared to follow Party lines. The conclusions from this are too many to enumerate. The repercussions may eventually be judged at the bar of history and at the ballet box too in the not too distant future.

The Trinity College Old Boys' Association will hold its 76th Annual Meeting on Ascension Thursday, May 7. Mass will be held in the College Chapel at 6 p.m., followed by the annual general meeting and the buffet supper in Gibney Hall. It is expected that at the annual meeting a new constitution will be adopted and the Association will be made into an incorporate body. The Association is hoping for many new faces from its members at the meeting. Its major achievement to date is the formation of the Trinity Old Boys' Credit Union Society Ltd. The Credit Union has grown rapidly since its formation and is providing valuable areas of savings and personal loans for members. It also now has its own TOBA Football Club, which is playing in the A mat eur Association tournament. The club trains at Haig Park every Thursday evening. The Association now offers two scholarships each year for boys to attend Trinity College.

To whom did Jesus say 'Man does not live on bread alone'? Who was Anna? Why was Jesus named Jesus? You will find the answers to these and hundreds of other questions in Bible Today. Bible Today gives you the complete text of the Bible for you and your children to read and understand the Word of God. The Jerusalem Bible Text. This text gives you an up-to-date and readable version of the Bible. It has all the

dignity and beauty of the older English translations, yet you and your children will easily understand its familiar and modern English, and will enjoy its vivid and lively style. This new Jerusalem version is accepted for use in all Catholic services. You and your children will love looking at the beautiful illustrations, archaeological photographs and maps that have been specially produced to match this fascinating text. Both the ancient world and our present-day world of the Bible are shown page by page in lavish colour. 450,000 words of captions and notes will give you a new insight into the people and world of the Bible. History of the Bible. How much of the Bible is historically true? What was life really like in the days of Abraham? Where is the Mount of Olives? The Garden of Gethsemane? Bible Today explains and discusses the historical truth of the Bible, and relates its wisdom, philosophy and beliefs to our present-day world. It shows the influence the Bible has had over the minds of men throughout thousands of years. Help your children to understand the Bible. Children's questions about the

Bible are often difficult to answer. With beautiful colour pictures, glossary and notes, Bible Today helps you answer their questions, so that they can understand more fully what the Bible has to say. "Was there really a Great Flood?" "What are the Miracles? How did they happen?" "Where do people come from?" These, and hundreds of other questions are answered with meaning and relevance. You and your children, students and teachers will find Bible Today an invaluable and fascinating reference work. The notes and Commentary for

Bible Today are written by a panel of distinguished theologians, each one an expert on some aspect of the Bible or its history. Catholic, Protestant and Jewish theologicians have all advised on this work. Part 1 of Bible Today starts with the fascinating and dramatic story of the Creation, and the arrival of Adam and Eve on earth. Beautiful medieval paintings, photographs and maps illustrate the Bible's ancient view of how the world began. The Commentary in Part 1 of Bible Today explains: "The Book of Genesis is one of the most important and influential books ever written. It is more than 2,500 years old, and yet the stories of Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden, and Noah's Ark are still familiar. The tragedy is that the value of Genesis has been largely lost since the scientific revolution which began in the 19th century." It goes on to explain just what the story of the Creation actually means. Bible Today makes reading the Bible so easy week by week, you and your children will enjoy knowing more of its meaning and history. Published in 112 weekly parts, Bible Today builds into a complete and magnificent 8-volume Bible. As well as text, history and Commentary, it includes glossary, archaeological notes and comparative religions of Bible times. It contains nearly two million words and over five thousand illustrations, most of them in colour. Beautiful binders in deep vellum brown, embossed with gold, will provide a unique and important addition to your bookshelf. A special matching binder has been prepared for the Commentary, so that the entire work of Bible Today is always at hand for immediate reference. Bible Today is written for you and your children and everyone who wants to r ead God's Word. Part 1 is out now. It starts with the Creation.
