S.A. Likely To Have Joint Justice Committee FOOTY WITH A DIFFERENCE

It seems certain that S.A.'s major churches wil l set up a joint commission on justice and human development. A t a meeting last Sunday, representatives of the S.A. Council of Churches and t he Catholic Church supported the establishment of the commission.

This depicts an hectic encounter in the goalmouth, with W.A. custodian Danny Civich defending strongly to prevent being scored. Notice the restricted scot ing areas of the goal which is used in the Gaelic code. It's different from the much bigger posts used in Aussie Rules.

THE CATHOLIC PRESS AND YOU Far too many people treat the Church newspaper as a notice board on which club circulars and notes are pinned. The majority of the Catholic community often abuse the Catholice Press - always willing to criticise, but seldom, if ever, willing to help. Catholic journalism is not a new field; it has existed for a good number of years and will, no doubt, exist for a good many to come. Lots of people today have the wrong impression of the Church. They are fed, through the secular media, slanted, one-sided stories. In fact, the latest trend is to slate the Pope, to watch his every move and to comment on his every statement. We feel that only a Catholic newspaper can put you in the right picture. The aim of every Church paper must be to cater for the local environment, with the object of educating, guiding, informing and acting as a voice for the Cathol ic community. To do this, it has got to stimulate the community into doing something constructive, something con c rete for the faith. Readers need not necessarily agree with ALL that is printed in the Catholic newspaper of their choice; they can still enjoy it without having to agree with everything written. The important thing to real ise is that times change, and the newspaper's function is to provide news, inform° tion that is new and entertaining, and to inform the community of these changes. But if a Church paper overloads itself with preaching material, it will lose its objectives and defeat the purpose of its existence. The Catholic newspaper today is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. That is why we ask you to promote "THE RECORD" AS YOUR VERY OWN NEWSPAPER.

THE CRUEL WORLD

fi

The world can sometimes be cruel. Very cruel. Especially towards people like alcohol ics and lepers, people who have no control over their mis fortunes. Last week, we ran a story on leprosy. We read that many of the lepers whose disease had been arrested, preferred to remain in the leper colonies where they were treated rather than face the world which they knew would be antagonistic. This week, we have an interesting article on alcoholics and the AA. In the case of the alcoholic, there is no cure. It is partially his fault when he reaches that stage, but that does not mean the community must treat him with contempt. Lepers and alcoholics face the same problem. Both can be rehabilitated, but both are, more often than not, treated as perpetual outcasts by their fellow-men. This is hard to understand, for this is 1 970, the start of an era which is supposed to be progressive. Men have already walked on the moon, yet this primitive, sickening attitude still remains.

"WHAT IS A BROTHER!" It is not unusual for a Brother to be asked, "Why did you become a Brother?", or "Why didn't you go all the way and become a Priest?" Replies vary, as each Brother explains something of the motivation of his personal vocation to the interested questioner. He might say he become a Brother so to devote his life completely to the service of God and his neighbour. And in so doing, he not only sanctifies himself, but effectively helps in the working-out of his neighbour's salvation.

MOTHER OF EIGHT

I should like to thank "Mother of Eight" for her letter of December 21, 1969. In case of doubt regarding infected kidneys, I would suggest seeking medical advice, for a simple routine Laboratory test for urinalysis. This will detect any infection and, if positive, can be satisfactorily dealt with. Yours sincerely, Sr. M. Philomena

TURBULENT TIMES CAUSE IN NUN VOCATIONS DROP

A n inquisitive priest learned the turbulence of the times, in addition to changes in religious communities, is the No. 1 reason for the decline in vocations to Sisterhoods in the Philadelphia area.

FOR MEN NEW BENEDICTINE WEEK-END RETREATS From the beginning of MAY this year until the end of OCTOBER, Week -End R etreats of a NEW kind will be conducted regularly at the BENEDICTINE MONASTERY, NEW NORCIA. The number of retreatants on each occasion will not exceed TWELVE. Instead of the usual formal conferences and spiritual exercises, the emphasis will be on RECOLLECTION, INFORMATIVE TALKS, DIALOGUE WITH THE MONKS, and PARTICIPATION IN THE MONASTIC LIFE generally. New Norcia is located on the Great Northern Highway, 82 miles from Perth, and the Monastery provides a secluded, historical country-setting of great natural charm. The Monastery Guest-House has been enlarged to receive retreat ants. Enquiry is invited also from others, BESIDES RETREATANTS, to facilitate their visiting the Monastery AT ANY TIME to obtain advice and guidance. A pplicants should mention the intended date and time cf arrival, and-WRITE to: Rev. Father A. McPhee, O.S.B., Benedictine Monastery, New Norcia, 6509.

Mgr. Edward J. Thompson, Philadelphia archdiocesan vocations director, polled 7,300 high' school and students members of religious communities and got back 5,600 replies in a two-question survey.

Racing Talk

In New Zealand, Sam Trimble on his team seem bent on retrieving Australia's cricket prestige, which, at this moment, is searching for that desperately needed shot-in-thearm. We are poised on the brink to take out the first Test against the Kiwis, who didn't let us get our own way when they scored 318 in their first innings. On one tour, Graham McKenzie is being roasted. This happens among batsmen and little is said about it. Ian Redpath and an Craig, are just two who had to redeem themselves after tour setbacks. Of these two, Redpath is the most noteHe has now come to light worthy case. against South Africa as the back-bone of our batting-lineup. Graham McKenzie hasn't been the first work-horse" to break-down, nor will he be t he last of an undistinguished band of bowlers who suffer a period of "cricket catastrophe." Cricket is on the verge of a post-mortem which could be the means of giving the game a spring-cleaning. There has to be a reason for the decline at top level. However, it could be that the opposition is too good. A decided shortage of al l-rounders in Australian cricket could possibly be the main reason for our reverses in South Africa.

by Rod Evans KERIAI BEY owned by M.L.A.'s Tom Bateman and Don May, brought off a gigantic plunge when he won the Botany Bay Novice Saturday. on Jockey Norm Coombe rode rum perfectly and he was never going to lose in running. He must have worked in brilliant style since his last race as the improvement shown took the Bookmakers by surprise. More wins ahead for this colt by COUNT CIMBRONE. APLOMB, a well bred stallion by INDIAN CONQUEST and owned and trained by Theo O'Reilly gave a very impressive performance when he had his first race in the second division of the Botany Bay Handicap. This horse should improve with the experience and together with STORMY and EXTRACTO, Theo O'Reilly will soon enjoy the pleasure of seeing his horses in the winners circle.

ACTION STATION is nearly old enough to vote but he proved on Saturday he has not slipped back since being trained by Hugh Jamieson. This old Champion finished from well back to run 4th in the Captain Cook Stakes and as he is a model of consistency when he strikes form, do not leave him out of c alculations.

Once again the Badminton season has got away to an early start. The Badminton Association of WA IS seeking new clubs, social or otherwise, to affiliate with it. Joining fees for the season for each club would be $15 per annum, plus 70 cents capitation fees for each person. Penants will be conducted on a "home and away" basis, depending on the locality of the club and where they play, and enquiries will be very welcome by ringing Mr. Alan McIlroy on 79-1621, Ext. 14, or writing to his home address, 27 St. Kilda Road, Balga.
