CHRISTIANS CALL TO ACTION
We have become used to the news media presenting us with the hackneyed cliches of the "haves" and the "have nots" of those who are among the majority in the world who have not the goods of this world, the material wherewithall to live lives of dignity and self-respect. There is no shortage of information about levels and trends of economic development in under - developed c ountries. Hardly a day passes when we are not confronted with estimates of per capita incomes, and other indices of material wellbeing showing that there is a wide difference by a factor of ten or more between the wealthiest and the poorest countries. Countries with the lowest per capita incomes are those that retain traditional techniques and modes of industrial organisation ( with predominance of agriculture in most instances) that have persisted without essential change for centuries. It is all too easy to be blase about the figures put before us: more often than not it needs a visit to cities like Calcutta and Karachi (en route, of course, to Europe or the Mother land) to bring home to us some of the visible w retchedness of human existence in the "have not" countries. It was encouraging to learn of the recent "Action for World Development", Conference in Sydney. Representatives of the World Council of Churches and the Catholic Church met to examine the role of the Churches in the developing countries and to make recommendation to Churches, Governments, and others who have a part to play in the development of those countries that qualify as "have nots", particularly in Asia. As an Ecumenical effort, we must welcome and rejoice in the co-operation of the Christian Churches in this field. Despite the almost depressing picture painted by some economists at the Conference; despite the enormous problems of meeting the educational needs of the developing countries (and education is essential if these countries are to effectively develop their own natural resources); despite the differences still dividing the Christian community (highlighted in the combined Ecumenical service during the Conference) yet the Christian virtue of Hope that was obvious at the conference was like a light shining in an otherwise dark night of Asia.

COMMISSION IN S.A.? It is believed the SA Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church are exploring the possibility of establishing a joint commission for social justice in Adelaide. A State conference on world development, followed by smaller regional conferences, are also believed to be under consideration. Two meetings are planned within the next few weeks of representatives of the SACC and Roman Catholic Church, as well as SA delegates to the ecumenical conference, Action for World Development, which ended in Sydney last week. The meetings will discuss what local action should follow up the Sydney conference.

Dear Boys & Girls D id you know that March 7th is t he Feast of St. Thomas Acquinas? This man was a Dominican priest a nd a master of theology, which meant he studied and taught about Cathol icism. He was a very learned man, and because of this was declared the patron of all Catholic schools. I mention this because people are sometimes inclined to think of Cathol ics as being stupid, without learning and unable to think for themselves. Perhaps someone has even said as much to you. U nfortunately there are a few that would rather the atholics C thinking, but do not their do Church should never questhat you bel ieve tion what you are taught about God. The more we question and seek the t ruth about anything, the more we learn. This is education. S ince St. Thomas was made a of schools we can take it that atron p can be a means of findlearning all many great men Remember ing God. professors, doctors such as scientists, and even astronauts have done so. Because of the advanced nature of t heir work they are able to see even more pearly than ourselves, the enormity and perfection of his universe. So what I want to say is this. . . In the many years of school ahead of you, don't think of it as a waste of time. Do your lessons well and if you don't always come up to your own e xpectations especially at exam time, do not worry. God did not give the same talents to everyone and he wants only that we should always do our very best. God bless you in your schoolwork,

STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! Pedestrians were our topic under this heading last week, and I promised you that this weeksue would talk about cyclists. Here are some rules that children who ride bikes to school should never forget.
S TOP!
1. ALWAYS travel as close to the left-hand side of the road as possible. 2. NEVER ride more than two abreast. Even this is dangerous on main roads! 3. ALWAYS give the proper hand signals and give them in plenty of time. 4. ALWAYS have both front and rear lights working when riding at night and try also to wear something white. 5. Don't double-dinky. DON'T fool around on your bike or try to show off by zig-zagging across the road or jamming on your brakes quickly. 7. REMEMBER that there is such a thing as ROAD manners and use them. Next week we will have a quiz to see if you have read this week's and last week's road safety sections well. Be prepared! .•••,

O Lord, in your loving kindness hear my prayer; O Lord, in your gentle tenderness please turn again to me. Veil not your face from your servant So sorely troubled; quickly answer me. Left to myself I am naught but a wounded wretch, Lord, by your saving power raise me up and I will bless your name in praise and song: I will extol your glory in transports of thanksgiving. -adapted from psalm 69 (68) by James J. FRAZIER IS THE CHAMP
WORLD of SPORT BETWEEN OVERS
Officialdom And The Sportsman
by FERD TIPPETT CRICKET John Inverarity has silenced his critics by his performances against Otago in New Zealand .Inver scored 108 with the bat and took 5 for 28 with the ball. Greg Chappell and Geoff Davies, with 82 and 88 runs respectively, were among the runs, and Australia, with a comfortable vicTory over Otago, seems assured of success against the Kiwis. Norm O'Neill for Midland, Guildford and Claremont-Cottesloe's Ross Edwards hit 154 and 174 in Pennant cricket last Saturday. They scored more than 20 boundaries each and devastated the opposing bowlers in a galaxy of fast run-getting. FOOTBALL COMMENT West Perth, last year's premiers, should s tart favourite for 1970. The Cardinals', main t wo losses could be Bill Valli and John Wynne. As in 1969, the reserve pool could leave West Perth in a solid position to chalk up another pennant. Graham Farmer's presence on the field will be needed for his team to continue on where it left off in 1969. East Perth, with new coach Malcolm Brown, will be on trial and it will be tested fully to retain a place in the top four. Perth, still under the astute leadership of Mal Atwell, has to face up to a torrid season minus the maestro of football, Barry Cable. The Demons have two dynamic footbal lers to vie for "No 1" rover, and Greg Bennett and Graeme Jenzen are both very talented. Perth will need all its resources to hold t heir place in the top bracket. Subiaco have replacement problems—a goalkeeper and possibly a centre-half-back. The Maroons have need of more fire and drive before realising "Little Napolean's" most fervent 1970 desire. East Fremantle, along with coach Eric Sarich, has the know-how to improve on its previous year's effort, and, providing roving and goal-sneak problems are solved, Old Easts should they discard forever their short game, could regain their vintage prestige. Swan Districts, in its search for more tall players for the important ruck duels, will need a replacement for Eric Gorman and a few others. Bill Walker will be in charge again, and the dynamic little rover can be relied upon to make the Magpies a real threat. The Tigers, under Dennis Marshall, impress as a possibility to move up the League ladder. The Monts are fit and eager to go at Claremont where their new club-rooms and new-look side will test the mettle of any side. Dennis Marshall was injury prone in 1969. However, the Tigers' crack centreman, with normal luck, could have his best season. Assuming Dennis really strikes his straps, the Tigers could really go places. South Fremantle has ironed out a number of difficulties—its roving will be lifted with the return of Norm Cox. Possibly the key to red and whites' efforts will be if their coach plays in the centre. In-form Hassa would probably be the best centre-man in Austrlaia.
