NEWMIRRABOOKA CHURCH OPENED Bishop sees his old parish grow up

I t was a day of double joy for Bishop Peter Quinn, Auxiliary Bishop of Perth, when he blessed and opened Mirrabooka's new St. Gerard's Church last Sunday. He had seen a dream come true and a parish come of age. It was only five years before that he had been appointed parish priest of Mirrabooka where, until early last year, he offered Mass every Sunday in a makeshift Chapel of partitioned classrooms at St. Gerard's School. When he walked gracefully to the ambo, one could detect a "glad to be back" smile. And there, before a large and familiar congregation, he spoke of old times.

E XPRESSION OF FAITH He said: "In five years. a lot has happened, I was privileged to hay...) worked with you. You were a source of inspiration to me, and deep bonds of friendship were established between us." He said the Church building was an external expression of the people's faith. It was the highlight of their ideals and concern for things spiritual. He thanked all those who were concerned with the building up of the parish, and the Church in particular, and added E veryone had a whale of a time — especially the kids. What with TV personalities Percy the Penguin and that they had shown a Trina, Lloyd Lawson, Jeff Newman and a host of others tremendous "desire to erect in their suburb who helped out with the stalls. something concrete to reThe target of $10,000 was reached, although no final mind them of God and figures are available as yet. to give to their lives a lasting and uplifting in Other prize winners were: spira t ion."

The wheel of fortune spins erratically . . . as this little chap has found out. He was among 7,000 people who flocked to the Redemptorist Monastery grounds last Sunday to enjoy themselves at the Fair. For some, luck was with them all the way — like Zel la and Chas (Ticket No. 499) and jockey F. Moore ( No. 388), who won the two B.O.A.C. World Tour prizes.

Young People's Singing raffle: 1st: T.V. set (valued $150) — Ticket 383 (A. Thompson, 6004800) 2: Dragstar bike — Ticket 3453 (Miss M. Baxter, 4A K illarney Rd., Innaloo) 3: $20 — Ticket 2779 (G. R. 170 Star Street, Carlisle.

Campaign Funds Okay

Freedom From Hunger Campaign funds are completely in order, Australian FFHC president, Mrs. G. N. Frost, said last week. Referring to recent publicity concerning Campaign funds, she said: Australian "The Freedom From Hunger Campaign has caused extensive enquiries to be made into its affairs by its honorary auditors.

"The Campaign can now report that the National Committee itself, its auditors and solicitors, are fully satisfied that the funds of the Campaign are completely in order and that no donations whatsoever have been lost. "Furthermore, the Campaign is satisfied that there has been no negligence in the conduct of its affairs by the National Committee."

He was aware that there was a deep bond of attachment between the people of Mirrabooka and the Bishop, and he hoped the next five years would see the parish continue to grow from strength to strength.

STREET'PRIESTHOOD CELIBACY AND Council called

Last January, the Dutch Pastoral for optional celibacy for priests. The Council w as supported by the Dutch Bishops. The world press gave the Council's report wide publicity, giving the impression that priestly celibacy was on the way out. Last week, "Time" magazine added more fuel t o the flames in the press war against celibacy. Its articles make sad reading: sad because it tells of ex-priests who have obviously lost the faith; sad, because the whole article is so heavily slanted against celibacy. No mention is made of St. Paul's words in Corinthians 7, 32: "I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord . . ." Press publicity given to the opponents of celibacy has all the appearances of a diabolical conspiracy to destroy the Catholic priesthood Celibacy is the shining jewel of the Catholic priesthood. Take it away and the priest is just another professional man with a job to do and a wife and family to care for. The secular press never mentions the hundreds of thousands of priests who remain loyal to their vows and are doing great work for God and His Church. Press sensationalism reached a peak some time at the beginning of this month when the Pope was quoted as saying that the only change in the celibacy law he would reconsider would be to allow matured married men, men of good reputations, to become priests in parts of the world where priests are tragically few. Of course, the secular press went to town with this, but in doing so had shown their ignorance. What the Pope did was to confirm what he has already done. What was not given the same publicity was the Holy Father's letter to Cardinal Villot on February 2 regarding the Dutch Pastoral Council's report. In that letter, the Holy Father wrote: "Considering everything before God, before Christ and His Church, and befor the world, we, therefore, feel it our duty to reaffirm clearly what we have already declared and several times repeated: that the link between celibacy and priesthood, as established for centuries by the Latin Church, constitutes for it a supremely precious and irreplaceable good. It would be extremely rash to undervalue it or even to let it fall into disuse. Celibacy has been consecrated by tradition and is an uncomparable sign of complete dedication to the love of Jesus." He went on to state emphatically that priests who left the ministry to get married would never be allowed to exercise their priesthood again. Bishops' Conferences throughout the world have supported Pope Paul in his defence of celibacy. The French bishops at Lourdes last October solemnly declared that they would call only young men determined to lead a life of consecrated celibacy to the priesthood. Let the people of God support these bishops and lay people should defend the celibacy of the clergy whenever and wherever it is attacked. More than that, the people should pray for their priests, pray that they remain faithful to their ordination vows and not turn their ears away to fables.

Redempforisi Provincial Chapter Clarification Arter reading the full Acts of this Chapter, and consulting with ar, authoritative capitular, I respectively suggest, in the name of my community, that the report published in your last issue needs clarification. No criticism of "The Record" is implied. The responsibility lies elsewhere. We were quite puzzled by the statement "more than 20 per cent of Australian Redemptorists are actively engaged in South East Asia, 40 per cent exercise their apostolate in Australia's near north."

There are several other interesting features. The grey granite altar, for instance, has provision for air-conditioning. The tabernacle shrine, designed by Mr. Muzak and made of aluminium by Mr. R. Wright (of Art Metals) is in the shape of the two Greek letters, "Omega", and "Alfa" symbolising God as the beginning and end of everything.

St. Gerard's can hold a congregation of about 500. And credit once again goes to the parishioners, for it was they who did the woodwork and assembled the seats, thus saving about $2000.

WORK!

Out and about with the .

A fter being involved in 'out of the ordinary' s type of work for nearly three years, I find myself,, f acing a somewhat uncertain future as far as employment is concerned. Y.C.W. places its emphasis on work, attitudes to such, and after telling kids about this 'correct a ttitude' to work, I wonder if I will be able to apply myself to a normal office position. Frequently, many have come into the office complaining of a very strict boss, or an unpleasant working companion and I have thought to myself —"I'm glad I don't work in a place l ike that." Last October saw the first meeting of a group of young people to discuss But maybe I will have to—what then? This will he be quite a chal lenge and one that will present its t needs of others. COMBINED STATE FOOTY SIDE VERSUS IRISH CHAMPIONS

BETWEEN OVERS by FERD TIPPETT CRICKET In the third Test at Johannesburg, after dismissing the Springboks for the moderate first innings total of 279, Australia could only manage 202 in reply. This is surely indicative that, as in previous Tests, the main factor for our reverses mainly lies in the brittle batting lineup. Graham McKenzie has obviously had too -much cricket, and his enforced rest from the third Test will eventually assist the tourists' performances in South Africa, when next "Macca" plays. The Australian touring side in New Zealand performed well enough against Canterbury in Auckland to suggest that they will succeed because of teamwork. Sam Trimble, the captain, and Greg Chappell impressed with the bat, while Kerry O'Keefe and Terry Jenner were the best of the bowlers.

May And Wheeler Likely For Games

The visiting Irish Gaelic football champions, Kerry, will play a strong combined State side at South Fremantle on March 7, at 4.30 p.m. There'll probably be a compromise in rules, but definitely not in the spirit of play. Host club, South Fremantle, has picked a strong combination to meet the Irishmen, and this will include West Perth's Graham Farmer, Swans' Billy Walker, Subiaco's Haydn Bunton, East Fremantle's Eric Sarich and South's own Hassa Mann, who by Rod Evans will, incidentally, be the skipper. THE

Dear Boys & Girls Shall we continue with last week's t heme? We spoke about Lent and what it might and should mean to you and how you could make it a most rewarding time of year. We said that Christ had invited us to a party on Easter Sunday. When you are invited to a party by one of your friends, do you ever ' save up' by eating less all day, so that you might enjoy the party food e ven more? If you do, then here is a nother way we can imagine Lent — as 'saving up' so that we can enjoy Easter to the fullest. During Lent it shouldn't be too hard to do without a few things to eat that we would normally have — an extra slice of bread and jam, a c ake, a biscuit, sweets, soft drinks etc. Al ! these things are not very good for us anyway, and doing without them could only do both body and soul nothing but good. One family I know are going without sweets for tea and are not having any in-betweens. The money they save by doing without these things is being divided by the parents and given to the children to put into the Compassion Box. Putting this into practice may sound hard but if we stop to think of those children who have never even heard of such things and how they wi l l benefit from our sacrifice, then it should not be too much to ask! God bless and help you to keep your resolutions during Lent. B ROTHER JUNIPER.
