Indian Cardinal Warns Laymen On Worldly Conformity

J oseph Cardinal Parecattil of Ernakulam, has praised laymen as the "eyes and hands" of the Church in the world and said their function is "irreplaceable", but also warned them on acceptPerth may not have the busiest airport in the Commonwealth , but it does have its moments of frenzied activity. this the noisy celebrations in the Orbit lnne after 10 p.m. and you realise that Perth has final ly caught up with the rest of the world. A cable from Cathay Pacific to the Catholic Migration Office in the Terrace brings news of the arrival of an Asian family sponsored by Cathmigration. A check with the airport at midnight reveals that the family is on board Flight 722 which will touch down on time—I a.m. The present Director of Cathmigration lives at Lynwood, and if the wind is from the north-east, the 707 will pass overhead on its way to the landing strip. If the wind is from the south-west, as it usually is, the roar of the reverse thrust jets is enough to indicate that the 707 has touched down safely and that it is time to head for the airport. On arrival, 20 minutes after the Flight has landed, the Director enters the lounge to be confronted by the usual collection of travellers, some in way-out gear —the flotsam of jet travel—others with rucksacks on the final stage of their journey round the world. There may be TV personalities (the professional wrestlers arrived one night looking very sad at the thought of having to wrestle in Perth!) The Director's eyes, however, are looking for one particular family. Contact is quickly made, a call on the money changers and soon the Corona is speeding through the darkened streets of Perth, in company with milkos and the early morning revellers, on its way to the SVP Migrant Hostel, Keaney House in Alma Road, North Perth. In 1969, the Catholic Migration Office sponsored 621 individuals into Western Australia. For a voluntary body, this is an impressive figure. How do these families, most of whom are Asian, settle in? Are they accepted? Do they feel at ease in the community? Perhaps if we have a closer look at one such family, we will see what can happen if the determination to make good is mixed with a little bit of luck. Number 27, Grinstead Way, Balga, is a typical, neat Australian home in a State Housing area. It is the home of Glen and Rosalind Castro and their four children, Albert (8), Charles (6), Angela (3) and

Jeanette (1). Mrs. Castro's mother, Mrs. Margaret Jacobs, completes the family picture. The Castros arrived from Rangoon on September 27, 1967, with $200 and airline baggage as their only possessions. It took three years before visas and entry permits were obtained and the family had to apply more than once when the initial application was rejected. After one month in Keaney House, a house was found in Mount Yokine and there they stayed till May 5 last year, when the move to Balga took place. On his arrival in Australia, Glen started work with the SEC and has been with them ever since. This steadiness has paid off in that, apart from progressing in his own particular job, the SEC Credit Union greatly assisted the move to Balga, together with a loan from the State Housing Commission. Now the Castro family, after less than three years in Australia, are buying their own home at the rate of $13 weekly, instead of paying $20 weekly rent on a dilapidated house in East Perth. Glen and Rosalind would be the first to admit that without initial help and encouragement, they would not have got very far. The Lambournes and the Boyans of Mt. Yokine are remembered with affection and still call in occasionally at Grinstead Way to see how things are going. The Catholic Migration Office itself, with its many helpers, its ability to assist in finding accommodaton and loaning the bond and first week's rent, is a tremendous boon to newcomers and often a source of wonderment to the Director and staff! The Castros attend Joondana Church because it's on a bus route and they have no car. Glen occasionally takes up the collection at the 10 o'clock Mass and the family are actively supporting the pledge system. The Legion Statue was in their home recently, and this meant more contacts with their neighbours. Glen has just completed two years of night school at the Perth Technical College and will be

W O ILD of SPO BETWEEN OVERS by FERD TIPPETT CRICKET In three outstanding seasons of cricket achievement, W.A.—winners of the Sheffield Shield in 67/68, second to South Australia 68/69 and now runners-up to Victoria in 69/70—has emerged again in the top two bracket. Considering the difficult assignment our players have each season—four straight 'tnatches away from home—our performances have been outstanding in this, a tough, cutthroat competition. Teamwork will always prevail agains tthe star-studded collapsible cricket champions. With Perth's first Test match to take place in December, the WACA ground is adequate and ideal ly situated for the State's biggest cricket venture. The ground can be expected to accommodate 30,000 people, and by December, a new public stand, which will seat approximately 3,300, will be ready. The condition of the oval and wicket has always been ideal, and weather in Perth around December rarely presents problems. During the last five years, WA has become very cricket-minded. The game has taken on " the family look". Perhaps one of the most a ttractive features of cricket atmosphere is carefree dress. Women wear beach-garb or summer fashion, while men are attired in relaxed Australian styles. Our cricket prestige has awakened in us the need for "the international atmosphere" that only a Test can bring to a city. Surely, since the memorable days of the great "Don", cricket has never been more intense and exhilerating than that which "Test fever" brings to cricket hungry fans. Our Shield team has set the pattern for the public "Test Match" appeal fund with a col'ective team effort of a $60 donation. ( Tony Lock's cricket future wil l be a matter of conjecture until June when the next state coaching appointment is made. Tony, of course, may not be available. However, all cricket fans will hope he will front-up as coach for 1970/71 season. Derrick Chadwick could fit into the Australian Test team as an opening bat in the Test series against the MCC for the 1970/71 cricket season. A lot will depend on Chadwick's performances on the New Zealand Tour which commences shortly. Bill Lawry ,the Austral ian captain, has needed an opener similar to Derrick Chadwick for some time, and this would enable Keith Stackpole to bat later in the batting lineup. TENNIS Open tennis has certainly raised the standard of the game over the last two years as the semi-finalists these days are the players who really "win their spurs" in the hurlyburly of knock-out open tennis. You've got to be really good to take out the plums in the European open tennis circuit and then fly into Australia to cash in on our tough, timeconsuming circuit.

Children's World

Dear Boys & Girls More than a week of Lent has passed. What special effort have you made so far? Giving up ice-cream or l ollies is easy if we're allowed to have them only on special occasions anyway! Some children I know have resolved not to argue with their brothers and sisters or use bad language during Lent. When, and if, they fail they fine themselves one or two cents of their pocket money and this goes into the family Compassion Box. This sounds a little enough thing in itself, but think of the conseYou are pleasing your quences. father, because they and mother don't have to correct you; you are pleasing God for his greatest commandment is that you love your b rother; thirdly you are helping the poor with your contributions; and f ourthly you may discover at the end of Lent that you are a better and happier person because you have overcome a fault. Perhaps you could think of Lent this way. Whenever you go to a party, you spend a good part of that day preparing yourself. Mum makes sure all your good clothes are washed and ironed, that you have bathed, that your hair is clean and neatly c ombed, your finger-nai ls clean. In o ther words you make yourself as presentable as possible out of respect for the person who invited you. Christ has invited us all to his Easter party on Easter Sunday. During Lent (the time of preparation) then, you should make your soul as attractive as possible for him. Tend it with love for God and your neighbour, wash it with prayer, neaten it by overcoming your faults, polish it with good deeds, and finally dress it with thanksgiving for al l that you have. I f you do these things then you wi ll spend Lent profitably. It is up to you! If you think that you have some really wonderful ideas for Lent, w rite in and share them with all the o ther boys and girls who read this page. Good luck and God bless your e fforts. BROTHER JUNIPER.
