THE RECORD 450 HAY STREET, PERTH.
THE OLD ORDER CHANGES Sunday, Feb. 15, marks the introduction of the New Order of Mass throughout the Archdiocese. As a result of the preparation in "The Record", and the introduction by gradual stages in many parishes, the New Order should go smoothly and should reveal the grandeur of its structure, the simplicity of the presentation, and the penetrative pedagogicale nature of its message without difficulty. Many will regret the passing of the Old Order just as they bemoan the transition to the vernacular, but the Church is in a modern inquiring, educated era where men's spirit must be fed, that it may go forward, not only to win the world for Christ, but "to love and serve the Lord." There are signs, however, that the New Order will win over even its bitterest opponents. But greater emphasis on people, particularly in a tangible way, so to speak, is bound to win them. The greater uplift given to the role of women in the needs of the world of God must also appeal to them, even though initially it will shock them. This latter recognition of the value of womenly participation in the Liturgy comes not before time. The best speakers, the clearest elocutionists and the most qualified speech authorities in parishes were women. tions were passed over because they were mainly women . . . all because of traditional adherence to St. Paul's anathema on women in Church. They were passed over for much less confident and competent proclaimers of the word of God. They had which the Church ignored. Thank God, at last their work is being recognised, and will be used . . . we hope. Let the New Order of Mass rout such narrow, mediocre and unworthy thinking. May the New proclaimers of the Word be aware of the privilege given them and may they discern more deeply, personally, what they proclaim. One other challenge is posed by the New Mass and the use of the vast resources of youth, manhood and womanhood in parishes. The priest has long been used to having his back to the people. In many cases, in the archdiocese, he now faces them. He has long been used to rattling off the long Latin polysyllabus passages with an ease and a mumble no-one dared question. Indeed in later day, the race was often to see whether priest or people finished first at the reading of the Passion during Holy Week. Thank God it, too has changed. In the norms of good diction, the postulate of balanced, clear articulation and emunciation of seminary days may have been forgotten. The challenge now is: Can they be recovered reasonably soon? One thing is clear: the proclamation of the Gospel and the content of the Homily will have to be of a higher order than heretofore. The success of the New Order falls on the Apostolic dedication of the priest. The New Mass, in its present form, is capable of enshrining the riches of the past, and unfolding a challenge and the promise of the future.

COMPETITIONS FOR LENT
BIRTHDAYS
Children's World
With "no cross words" as your motto for Lent, think very hard about the events in our Lord's Passion, when He could have lashed out, quite justly, and could have been angry, cross, irritable, but never was. You could consider the times when He found the Apostles sleeping in Gethsemane, before Pilate, before the soldiers, and similar occasions.
* SUNDAY
Dear Boys & Girls By now you are all back at school. almost hear some of your moans can I Whatever your feelings groans. a nd it would be a pity if school about you didn't stop to other ometime or s school is necessary. think just why What do we do at school? Everyone knows the answer to that question we learn! But what do we learn and how? E ven teachers wi l l argue about this. But I think most would argree that the purpose of education is to prepare us in every way to live a full, happy and successful life in the community in which we l ive. Our minds are improved by learning, studying and thinking; our bodies by participating in sports and by learning such things as hygiene, safety first and good eating habits; and our souls by learning about God and what he wants us to do. E verything we do at school is d irected then to making us BETTER people, and thus, better Christians. J ust the same as to be good at any sport or game you must spend time l earning the rules and developing your muscles, so too, to be a good person you must spend time learning the rules of life, and developing the s trength to put them into action. If you keep this in mind perhaps you wil l look forward with joy to your days at school. They are very important and should be very happy cloys. God bless you all and help you in your schoolwork.
