MISSIONARY PANORAMA The missionary year under review falls between memorable papal visits: the first visit of a wo t pope to South America and the first to Africa. Pope Paul VI visited Bogota from August 22 to 24 in 1968 and from July 31 to August 2, 1969, the ,African continent. The missions have not escaped the general unrest and questioning of the post-conciliar church, but on the whole they have been less affected than the traditionally christian countries. The whole theology of mission has come under scrutiny and has formed the object of seminars, such as that arranged in Rome by SEDOS from March 27 to 31, and attended by missionary experts and theologians from various countries. The Pope, in his message for Mission Sunday, pointed out that the missionary drive enters into the very concept of Christianity and that all Christians must take part in the church's missionary work. He also warned that the council's proclamation of religious liberty is not meant as an approval of indifferentism and that it is still as Important as ever for men to hear and heed Christ's message. The Plenary Assembly of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelisation of People's, at its annual meeting from April 22 to 25, felt the question of missionary theology was so important that it decided to have this subject as one of the three main items for discussion next year.
Activity Apart from the papal visits and the message for Mission Sunday, the Pope has continued to take a deep personal interest in everything concerning the missions — whether in following with personal attention the developments in the missionary church, or in himself ordaining bishops for the missions, concelebrating Mass with priests from overseas, or greeting representatives and pilgrims from missionary countries. In March this year the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelisation of Nations published two im portant documents — one on the relations between bishops and the Pontifical Missionary Works, and the other on the relations between bishops and missionary institutes. A new feature this year was the first session for the Lay Consultors of the Congregation, when six of the seven lay consultors met in Rome on March 21-22. They included representatives from Japan, Ceylon and Ghana. One of the main questions they discussed was that of the international missionary co-operation of the laity. The Secretary of the Congregation, Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli, made several personal visits to the missions during the year, using for this purpose his summer vacation, as well as such special occasions as the fiftieth anniversary of the Scarboro Fathers, the blessing of the new major seminary in Yoaunde (Cameroun), the Indian National Seminar in Bangalore and the All-Africa meeting of bishops in Kampala.
He has made personal contacts in the past twelve months with missionary work in Japan, Korea, Australia, several of the Pacific Islands, North Canada, Alaska, Iceland, Scandinavia, India, Ceylon, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singa pore, Indonesia and Uganda.

My Memories Of A Papal Audience . • •
These Shoes Weren't Made For Walking By Dorothy Tangney Certainly they weren't, not in the heat of a late Roman summer! Whoever talks of the Seven Hills of Rome has had a lapse of memory, for my feet, always a true guide in such matters, assured me there were at least a hundred and seven, and the strangest thing about those hills: they all went up and never came down! So if ever you are thinking of visiting the Holy City in September, take a tip from me and take with you your oldest, most comfortable shoes and cherish them well — whether they're in fashion or not. But be sure they are a pair and they are your own. This is where I made my mistake. Still at the end of a day in Rome, aching feet were but a small price to pay for the happiest experience of my life. For on that day I met Pope Paul — not Pope Paul the Statesman, the leader of men — but Papa Paolo — the Holy Father — the real father of his children. It was nine o'clock when my phone rang and a very English voice told me that His Excellency, the English Ambassador, had arranged for me to meet His Holiness, Pope Paul, at ten o'clock at Castel Gandolfo, the Papal residence some miles from Rome. A teenage party can be of many kinds — but it must not be dull. What price will not a boy or girl pay to ensure fun and liveliness at their parties? The price can be high: usually it is drink The gang are not babies — soft drink is beneath t heir status. The Big ' timulant is needed for Big Fun — whatever the "oldies" may happen to think. There is no doubt that drink is the first step towards these orgies. And drinking is something that you just have to do to appear one of the grown-up gang. Where are the parents? Perhaps they have gone away so as "not to spoil the youngsters' fun." We read of one young Sydney girl who offered an "open party" while Mum and Dad were away in Queensland. It was reported that 500 turned up. One young person had this to say in a letter: "I was at a party during the holidays. No one was over 21 and there were no parents supervising. Before long a number were half-drunk, and seven of them became stupidly drunk. It is shocking to see teenagers, especially girls, drunk." Parties for teenagers have their proper purpose. The young people are brought out socially; they meet a cross-section of both sexes. The parties must be "successful" and this is where the parents come in especially — to ensure that if there is any drinking done it is done in the strictest moderation.

HOLIDAY MOTORING DEMANDS HOW BRIGHT IS YOUR HOME! A NEW APPROACH When I had completed my training as a
horticulturist, I spent five years working in the open with a team of men. My job then was planting and caring for trees and shrubs in the parks and gardens of my city. I liked the work, the outdoor life, and enjoyed working with a gang of men. Then I was promoted to an office job which involved planning and costing improvements to the parks and gardens. I found office work very strange. The people around me seemed to work by themselves, and even for themselves. wasn't used to this. Previously I always felt part of a team. Pretty soon I found myself falling into the same traps—working by myself, arriving late for work, not knowing the people I worked with, the lot. As a result, my colleagues outside the office were my only friends. I hadn't made any new ones. I didn't know the newcomers to the office—mainly young girls and boys straight from school. A t night, lying in bed, I used to think about what I could do to become more accepted, and more important, help everybody accept each other, new or old. The first attitude I had to work on was my own towards work. Why was I late? Why did I work entirely on my own? Why didn't I know anybody? Was it because I didn't accept my role in this work place? In my outdoor days, other people made me their friends—I didn't make them mine! Now I had a new challenge, my new environment. I must make a move to be friendly! As getting to work late affected my work,. I decided to try there first with a great opportunity to say "hello" as people arrived. So my procedure for the next week was to make work five minutes early and greet everybody in my department. I did this, without much result. In the second week they acknowledged my zseting. After that I kept trying. Some stopped and yarned for a short period. Finally three or four would stop—then five, six, seven, until practically all the workers in my department had a short yarn before we started work, but during our own time as they were coming earlier too. A s you can imagine, the whole attitude of the workers in this department has changed. People there are seeking help, from each other, not only in their work—but with their daily problems. Some with families, meeting the costs of raising a family; others in flats and their disadvantages; others living away from horne. Now our office is like my old outdoor gang —a team. We can see the need to accept newcomers now —whether they come from somewhere else or transfer or whether they are just starting work. I wonder how many people like myself are used to being treated well, expect this even, but are not giving ourselves to the others. How happy is your work place? Maybe you can be a real service to others there. It's worth a try.

Christmas is that time each year when we recall the fundamental fact of Christian existence. I say that it's a time, because one day is scarcely enough to honour all the customs that are part and parcel of this annual feast. The liturgical calendar has always recognized this by including within the Christmas season other feast days that draw out and highlight the remembrance of God's entrance into human history through His Son, Jesus Christ. And this is the central fact of the Christian experience—Christ the Saviour has come. Difficult as it is for us to come to grips with the theology of the Incarnation, it is increasingly difficult to experience the purpose of the Christ-event, or better, to feel the spirit of Christmas, that is—peace on earth. Peace has always been an illusory thing in the human family because it is so easily shattered by man's selfishness. As Pope John reminded us so well in his great encyclical Peace on Earth, peace among men is built on the foundation stones of truth, justice, unity and love. Unfortunately, absence of these virtues in the lives of men destroys peace in the world community, and creates serious doubts about Christ's presence in the world. W.A.'s Carmel O'Shea is a girl eager better the lives of others less fortunate than herself. On Monday, February 16, she gets her chance. For, on that day she leaves for Vietnam where she will join the Red Cross Field Force in Vung Tau. She will be stationed at the Field Service Hospital, situated within the 1st Australian Logistic Support Group complex where most of the sick and wounded Aussie and Kiwi soldiers in Vietnam are taken. She'll carry out shopping expeditions to either the service shops or gift shops, or the markets . . . write letters for patients unable to . . drive parties of patients to the nearby beach or to church . . . help run the Red Cross recreation room . . . or just sit and talk to bring a breath of home to a hospitalised lad. A lot of work, you may say. But Carmel will be well prepared, for she is currently spending her working hours in the various Red Cross departments, learning the ropes. In fact, she's lookinc forward to her assignment.

So, because of Communion, we are looking towards eternal life with Jesus and His Father and the Haply Spirit, and all who have loved. Every time we go to Communion we really have these four signs in mind. Mass reminds us of the last Supper and of Jesus' dying and rising and living now in heaven. We receive Communion in order to be united with Jesus here and now. We go :o Communion with lots of other people to remind us that we belong to a family of love; if we did not love God or each other, we should not i' t receiving Jesus. And always we have in mind that thi, bread, which is Jesus' living Body, is preparing us for eternal life and happiness. Saying "many happy returns" would be asking you to come often to Communion. Hoping we all reach the eternal life Jesus promised us.
