CALL TO ACTION The people of God are a pilgrim people. They grow up amid the rigours of exile. They have no blueprints of the 'new heaven and earth' which is their promised land. They live by faith, while moving toward full freedom. They wander in a world, which, in the words of Jurgen Moltmann, a German Protestant theologian, is, 'a world unhealed socially and politically'. A wilderness frightens even brave men, whether it be a wilderness of doctrinal obscurity, political indecisiveness, or social mismanagement. It is conventional today to lament the lack of leadership in all areas of life—in the home, in the church, in Canberra, on the university campus. Far too many want somebody strong and clear-thinking to take them out of the wilderness. They forget that the most they have a right to expect from a leader in any walk of life is that he lead. While doing so he must contend with cynicism, scepticism, frustrated hopes and over-enthusiasm. Ultimately it is not the leader but a lived Gospel which leads us out of the wilderness. It is the Gospel which energises Christian activity and creates a holy restlessness in the world. The Gospel is not afraid to face the world, which though redeemed by Christ's blood is still not completely delivered from evil . The Golden Jubilee celebration of the Knights of the Southern Cross has been the occasion for messages of congratulation from all the Bishops of Australia. All in their individual original way express the hope that this body of lay leaders may work for the good of Australia and the Church. This hope will find validity only when men of this calibre continue to engage in the lay apostolate, serving the needs of humanity by providing leadership, initiative and courageous action. The past fifty years have been successful against a background of sectarianism. The future in the spirit of Vatican II and the ecumenical efforts to achieve unity of action if not complete unity of faith, should provide a f resh challenge and impetus to work for the b etterment of humanity and the Christianisation of the world. While congratulating the Knights on their Golden Jubilee, 'The Record' expresses the hope that the years ahead may be years of d ynamic and constructive lay apostolic action, and it urges that the leaders of the future will be found only where Christian faith and principles are lived and nurtured, be it in the home, the social centre or youth organisation.

Requiem On Warship
DEATH OF RELIGIOUS SISTER
Sister M. Christopher, of the Sisters of St. John of God, died recently. She was a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, and, on the completion of her Novitiate at Subiaco, she qualified as a nurse and went on to dedicate herself to the care of the sick. A competent nurse, endowed with great personal charm and a happy disposition, she was very popular in the many hospitals and Houses of the Order in which she worked. Her remarkable patience and kindness to the trying and the needy endeared her to all. In later years, her health failed noticeably and just as in life she edified all with whom she came in contact, so it was in her last illness. May she rest in peace.

Churches Urged To Aid Developing Nations

Arms Limitation Talks Significant The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks which began on November 17 in Helsinki, Finland, between the United States and the Soviet Union, are potentially the most significant negotiation since World War II, and, possibly of this century, said Msgr. Marvin Bordelon, director of the Division of World Justice and Peace, US Catholic Conference. He said: "The super powers are sitting down together to see if the arms spiral can be reversed. It has become more and more apparent, with the tremendous advances of science in the last two decades, that technology itself is capable of overshadowing man's ability to control his own environment. It is hoped that, by these talks, mankind can avoid nuclear holocaust which is the ultimate in irrationality."

'THE CHRISTMAS STORY' The Girl Guides Association of New South Wales is producing a Christmas record with a. t charming introduction by Princess Anne. It will be called the 'Christmas Story'. This is probably the first time such a record which is interspersed with carols, has been produced in Australia. The young Guides themselves were asked what they would like to do to celebrate their Golden Jubilee Year and they chose the production of this record. This is because they want children everywhere to be able to share with them the joy of the Christmas Story and they hope children will join the choir in singing the carols. Sir William Dobell has painted a wonderful nativity scene specially for the cover which will occupy the whole of one side without printing of any sort. This is a 45 EP and plays for about 7 minutes on each side. The carols sung are: "North Australian Wind", an carol written by W. G. MISSION NOTES • • • AN EDUCATIONAL REVOLUTION Writing to his friends for Christmas, Father Mike Morrison made these comments education-wise: 'The Territory is on the verge of a major overhaul in education. A committee has extensively toured all districts and has, after much discussion, prepared a scheme for consideration by the Minister for Territories. Though the actual findings are confidential, enough is known about their appraisal to give you some idea what the future holds for us. Two aspects were dominant—to find an educational system which would remain at independence and one which would allow the missions to retain their identity in education. 'The committee has done a commendable job, we have never found ourselves so involved in discussions . . . we nr,ver expected so much unity on the part 01 the Administration or various Churches. 'Envisaged is quite a revolutionary system, All teachers would belong to a National Teaching Service under a Commission which employs them, safeguards their professional and industrial interests. From this supply, schools will advertise for staff, the schools themselves remaining under the Administration or Voluntary Agency control. A National Education Board chaired by the Director of Education, and a District Education Board chaired by the District Superintendent of Schools will control education at National and District levels. On these boards, representation is held by the Administration, the Voluntary Agency, teachers, Local Government and other consumer interests. It is not obligatory for a Voluntary Agency to join the new system, and if it does join them membership is at three levels, with a corresponding range of financial support. 'The proposed system has many good points, and a few controversial ones, especially to the "old guard". It is a challenge in that we may teach in any school, and may receive teachers from any authority. While opening an ecumenical window in our schools we find an open door in others. We are no longer second-rate cousins, but receive fraternal equality. 'It is necessary for New Guinea to find some system because we could not survive under that in Australia or USA with our limited local help. Nor could the country stand duplication of effort. The fact that we will be tied in with the National system gives security on independence. Numerically and geographically the Catholic Church is as big as the Administration in education . . . and the non-Catholic Churches make up the other third.' T EACHERS The Catholic Church has over 2,000 teachers in some 520+ schools educating over 72,000 children. At present the Church receives about $2,500,000 a year compared with $20,000,000 for the Administration, whose involvement is equal to the Church. CRICKET In the Shield game at the Adelaide Oval, WA scored 157 to South Australia's 314, and trailed by 157 in the first innings. Western Australia, in its 2nd knock, made 385, leaving the home side 229 runs to obtain an outright win. At stumps South Australia were eight wickets down for 179, and time had cheated WA of six certain Shield points. Our small score in the first innings could only be attributed to the batsmen's tentative approach to spin bowling. Lance Gibbs and Terry Jenner tied our boys in knots, and Greg Chappell, with his cutters, assisted in the debacle. We were a different team when fighting uphill in our second innings John lnverarity, with 89, took Gibbs and Jenner apart by playing the spin bowling from outside the crease. Derek Chadwick 66 and Tony Mann ( a slashing knock of 67) were the top scorers. Ken Cunningham was the star of the match, the SA left-hander, made 54 and 77 for his side in a grand double. We need to retrieve our position in the competition, in our next four games at home, with some outright victories. There is little between the teams, and when our team strikes form together, WA should get bigger and better first innings scores. WA will meet South Australia in the new knockout series on Monday at 11 a.m. at the WACA. They'll bowl 40 overs each. South Perth, second in the 'A' Grade competition with 18 points, have a talented side and should fulfil the hopes of State all-rounder coach Ian Brayshaw. In the batting, David Bull, 22-year-old opening batsman, has scored approximately 2,000 runs in club cricket. Bowlers, spin: Eddie Gilfillan (left-hander), Kevin Prindiville (leg spinner).
