The synod, opened on October 11, has been heralded by a running the in commentary world press and among many Catholic leaders w ith predictions of conflict and even engagement over progressive and conservative views.
THE SALVATION OF MAN
The other thought which he said sprung "from that high esteem which should be given to recognized episcopal collegiality," leads bishops "to a more organic sharing and a more solid coresponsibility in the government of the Universal Church.

"PRAY THE ROSARY FOR TRUE PEACE"
—POPE PAUL
In an Apostolic Exhortation addressed to the episcopate, clergy and people of the Church, Pope Paul urged all "to implore through the Rosary the aid of the Blessed Virgin Mary" during the month of October so that "through the reconciliation of men's minds and spirits of people, true peace may at last shine on the world". The appeal pointed out that this intention was more urgent and more serious than ever. "Despite some progress and some legitimate hopes, murderous conflicts are continuing, new points of tension are appearing, and even Christians, who refer to the same Gospel of love, are seen in opposition to each other. Within the Church itself, misunderstandings arise between brothers who mutually accuse and condemn each other. Hence it is more urgent than ever to work and pray for peace." Undoubtedly peace is the concern of all men. Being a common good of all, it must be the constant care of everyone, but especially of those who carry the responsibility of States and of the community of peoples. Peace is also the concern of God who placed in man's heart the ardent desire for peace. He it is, the appeal continues, who urges us . to work for peace, each doing his share, and for that purpose He sustains our feeble energies and our vacillating wills. He alone it is who can give us a peaceful soul and c onfirm in depth and solidity our efforts for peace. Prayer is an irreplaceable contribution to the establishment of peace. And because it was Mary, Christ's Mother of whom the Gospel says that she "found favour with God", 'nen should direct their_ thoughts to ask her intercession. Pope Paul recommended the Rosary as one form of prayer since, by dwelling upon the mysteries of the Rosary we learn, through Mary's example, to become souls of peace, "by loving and unceasing association with Jesus and the mysteries of His redemptive life The Pope addressed his appeal at this stage to children and young people, the ill and the elderly, adults, consecrated souls, bishops and priests and urged all to call upon Mary "that knowing Her they may the better know Her Son, and through her intercession be granted the gift of peace, and that love may triumph over discord."
AN IDEAL AND A CHALLENGE Priests and the priestly ideal have taken quite a drubbing recently. Not only have many of them lowered theic sights and left the priesthood, but many have raised not merely their heads but also their voices in revolt. They will definitely hit the headlines. The ordination of married men to the Catholic priesthood will also make news. Many will find it hard to accept the idea while othersA will see a ray of progress in the fact. Mission Sunday should help all not only through examination of the priestly ideal at St. Charles' Seminary open day today, but also by a realising that we have a duty towards all those who have forsaken their ministry. "The Record" congratulates the newly ordained priests and in wishing them ad multos annos, it hopes, too, that West Australian Catholics will welcome them into their midst and help make their pastoral work happy, fruitful and ample.

IRISH NEWS LETTER
Ireland's Minister for External Affairs, Dr. P. J. Hillery, T.D., told the United Nations General Assembly recently that the immediate plight of the minority was his Government's concern. He said: "But we are convinced that the heart of the matter lies in the partition of Ireland, which originally brought about the political structure of Northern Ireland and gave the Unionist p'arty the degree of automynous control which permitted them to discriminate against the minority." "We have no desire to vitiate the spirit of friendship and co-operation which has begun to grow between the two parts of our divided country, or the amicable relations which have developed between the peoples of Ireland and Great Britain after centuries of strife and confrontation. "That we nevertheless addressed two requests to the United Nations in recent weeks in connection with this problem is due to the grave situation which developed in Northern Ireland through growing impatience and frustration of the minority at the persistent denial to them of human rights and fundamental freedom."
CAMERON REPORT
Dr. Hillery said the events in the past few months made it evident to all that the 1920 revolution of powers had not provided a fair and just system of Government acceptable to many of the Northern Irish. He said this was demonstrated in the report of the Commission appointed by the Belfast administration and headed by the distinguished Scottish judge, Lord Cameron. "The report makes clear the urgent necessity for change." Dr. Hillery quoted British Prime Minister Harold Wilson as saying in 1967 that Great Britain would be happy if the problem could be solved by an agreement in the Emerald Isle. He hoped then that an intensification of the process of the coming together would arise Within the next few years.
"Sock it to 'em" is the modern version of an "eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" in the Old Testament. The Roman law also taught "the wrongdoer should get as good as he gives." But -sock it to 'em- is not exactly the same as the law of retaliation; it is rather that no man should be an absorbent; he must be a detergent, using all the enzymes in his control to get the dirt out of the other fellow's eye. On the psychological side, "sock it to 'ern" is egotism, the reaction of the man who believes he is on top of the totem pole. Life may be short but it is long enough to pour cold water on a challenger.
HEALEY IN BELFAST
The Stormont Government must press ahead with its programme of reforms. said Mr. Dennis Healey, British Secretary of State for Defence before he returned to London from Belfast. "The troops have only given time in which the government might solve its problem. They must get on with it now and make use of r time gained for them by the soldiers." The New Ulster Movement, in a report entitled 'Ulster after Cameron' has called for t he urgent reform of the Unionist party. It also demanded the dismissal of Mr. William Craig from the Privy Council and Parliamentary Party and of Mr. John Taylor, Junior Minister at Home Affairs. Meanwhile, the timing of Northern Ireland's Unionist Party's booklet "Ulster—the Facts". was criticised by English High Court judge, Mr. Justice Scarman, chairman of the Northern Ireland tribunal which is investigating the disturbances in the North.
PSYCHOLOGI.SI ,REPLIES
Father James T. McHugh, in his column recently, defended his proposed sex education programme with an attack on Dr. Rhoda Lorand's conception of the "latency period" in childho od development. Dr. Lorand believes that most sex education programmes are misconceived and rest upon faulty psycholo gical assumptions. A noted non-Catholic child psycho-analyst, Dr. Rhoda L. The legacy of hard pressed and contending souls makes one think of Paul who wrote from his prison that everything that happened to him was for the pro°Tess of the Gospel. Many thought that because he was in a Roman jail that the Gospel would never be preached. But to him the loss of friends, the reproach of enemies, the momentary sense of failures and defeat quickened not only his soul but also others.
There is no hatred in this mood, but there is a claim to superiority and selfwill. Let any age produce a generation of egotists and then the next age will be an age of tyrants. The teachers in colleges and universities who are instilling into youth the spirit of violence, are begetting a generation of school teachers who will tolerate little freedom of expression.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Irish Prime Minister, John Lynch, said: "We have many times, down the years expressed our willingness to seek a solution on federal lines." The possibility of a federal solution was also referred to by Industry and Commerce Minister, George Colley. A possible solution to the current conflict between Protestants and Catholics might be the formation of an Irish Federation of Southern and Northern Governments under one Parliament, he said. Mr. Quinton Hogg, MP, British Conservative spokesman on Home Affairs, wrote in the Listener (London) in support of a joint commission on which Dublin, Stormont (seat of the Northern Ireland Parliament) and Westminster would be represented and which, besides guaranteeing human rights, would offer a forum for discussion of political differences.

MESSAGE OF MISSION SUNDAY
The Pope distributing Holy Communion to the newly baptised Christians during his visit to Uganda polarises the apostolic ideal Mission Sunday and the joyful moment of fruition for all those engaged in the spread of the Gospel. The plumed head coverings and the wondrous youthful vigour and enthusiasm of the Church in Uganda underline the need for Africa to develop in its own way and make its own individual contribution to the people of God.

There used to be something exotic and romantic in the concept of missionary endeavour, as if it were an evangelising adventure in far-off and unknown lands; today, however, the concept is more positive and realistic. This is remarked by the Holy Father, Pope Paul, in his message to all of us for Mission Sunday, which will be observed on October 19. Pope Paul's message is urgent, to stir us from the placid acceptance of an annual collection to which we perfunctorily donate a coin. He says: "Sons and daughters of God's holy Church. We consider ourself at this moment as spiritually in your midst. Listen to us, for the love of Our Lord!" Pope Paul stresses the imperative mission of the Church to preach the Gospel, the obligation of which, "is imposed on every disciple of Christ, according to his ability," as the Council says in Lumen Gentium. New in the Church's consciousness is this "urgent and universal duty of the apostolate." It is a "constitutional dynamism," a responsibility of every one of us. "The whole Catholic community must become convinced of the necessity to spread the faith; each and every member of the Church must be aflame with apostolic fervour and missionary zeal." Nevertheless, Pope Paul then speaks of the word "mission" in its "specific and technical meaning of activity envisaged and organised for the express purpose of evangelising peoples who are not yet Christian, by means of persons who have dedicated themselves, and are chosen, prepared and officially sent, that is, by means of `missionaries'." He refers to the Holy See's Pontifical Missionary works, which he calls his "primary pastoral r esponsibility". The very existence of this central and official organisation, the Pope says, is an answer to those who em-
phasise the conciliar proclamation of religious liberty as if it favoured an "agnostic irenicism" and indifferentism concerning religious truth and the apostolic command.
Religious liberty, as proclaimed by the Council, is meant to ensure that religion will be free from undue interference by any purely secular power and also from wrong social and political exclusiveness in the religious field; it is not meant to weaken our apostolic duty. Today, as yesterday, the motive and moral value of missionary activity remain valid; moreover they are strengthened by the development in the missionary concept. The attitude of the missionary towards countries to be evangelised has also evolved, Pope Paul says; the diversity of cultures seems no longer an obstacle, but rather reveals native values worthy of respect and admira tion, "which should be understood, fostered and adopted, or. as the Council says, 'purified, strengthened and ennobled'." This is an answer to that criticism which accuses missionaries of imposing a foreign culture, i.e., western, or Roman, on peoples whose ways are different, of attempting to turn, as was said here recently, aborigines into white black men. The Church is essentially missionary. Its mission is to convert; but the conversion is to the Gospel of Christ, which is acceptable to all men, whatever their colour or culture, and can only ennoble them and make them free, within the universal brotherhood of all men. Mission Sunday brings these realities before us and gives us an opportunity to support practically those who officially carry out the Mission of the Church. Pope Paul appeals on their behalf, which is also his own, and ours also, with the words: "He that has ears to hear let him hear."
C atholics and Lutherans to have Olmypic Centre
The Catholic and Lutheran Churches in West Germany will establish an ecumenical centre for pastoral care and religious services during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
