SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR MISSION TEACHERS
Education is a pressing problem for Aboriginal boys and girls today if they are to be integrated into full membership of Australian s ociety. Teaching them adequately means that their teachers must be specially equipped to cope with specifically aboriginal needs. The Social Welfare Branch of the Northern Territory Administration has a scholarship scheme for the training of teachers for service in schools for Aboriginal children on the Northern Territory Missions. Candidates must be approved and sponsored by the Catholic Missions. Training is provided at the Australian School of Pacific Administration in Sydney, and at Claremont Teacher Training College. This should make the scheme particularly attractive to West Australians. Applicants must be at least 17 and no older than 30 years of age as at December 31 of the year application is made. Ex-servicemen may apply provided they will be no older than 51 years of age when they commence training. They must be prepared to serve for three years as teachers in the schools of the Catholic Missions in the Northern Territory. If one were asked to name the one word which is most used today it would probably be "involvement". The word used least would probably be "humility". The last time it was used publicly was aver a decade ago when Arthur Godfrey accused someone of lacking "humility".

The basic challenge to authority in all fields is being encouraged by the spreading habits of drugtaking and sexual licence in all its forms. Apart from their dangers to individuals, these debasements have a debilitating and demoralising effect on society generally. Their main purpose is to discourage thought by drowning it in sensualism. For, sooner or later, young people are not going to be content merely with pulling things down. They will want to do something positive and constructive but they will find it hard to slough off the despond of sex, drugs and violence.
We could not agree more. And here surely is an area where it could be possible to unite the youth forces of all the Christian churches into powerful united one front against the forces of paganism and subversion. yearns Youth with great eagerness and generosity for what is true, good and beautiful—and what is more, the achievement of these things against what is evil, cheap and tawdry in our civilisation is primarily their battle. One feels that a clarion call for a youth crusade in defence of Christianity would evoke a tremendous response. And God knows, the hour is late.

by Father T. McHugh The Christian Family Movement held its 16th National Convention at Notre Dame from August 21-24, 1969. As usual, families came from all parts of the country to spend three days to a week in revitalizing their commitment to CFM and in orientating themselves to the theme of the coming year's programme. Much of the convention is quite familiar. Stationwagons converge on the campus like armoured divisions approaching the primary target, kids all over the place as if they owned it, married couples of all ages, colours and sixes, who are both serious and relaxed,and the clergy contingent, who generally surface and are identifiable at the liturgy or the pizza sessions. (They wear albs and eat more pizzas.) CFM has always been an important f acet of the family life movement, and, during its history, has trained many couples for social action, family life education, and for involvement in other specific areas of the Church's life in the United States. Perhaps the most unique accomplishment of CFM is that as it leads a couple to a deeper understanding and appreciation of their own married life, at the very same time it leads them to a realization that their family unit is the sacrament —that is, the external expression of Christ's presence in the world. In fact, it's probably the only completely lay organization in the Church that has remained vital, current, and very much in touch with the emerging trends.
FREE -WHEELING Despite many successful years, CFM has seen cause to question its reason for existence and ask some serious questions about its own future. The Executive committee has engaged Dr. John Maiolo, of Notre Dame, to conduct a s tudy of the movement in depth. A lthough Dr. Maiolo's study will be reported at length in a future column, his preliminary findings indicate the CFM a free-wheeling, but highly efficient, type o f movement, consistent in its basic i deology, yet experiencing a healthy tension as to which of its orientations— concern with the family as an individual social unit, or concern for the family's responsibility to the larger community, of which it is a part—should take pre-
cedence at any one time. On the strength of his information, Maiolo finds CFM generally healthy and very much in tune w ith current trends in our society. This year's convention was characterized by a number of new programmes w ithin the movement itself. A number of couples, who attended the first Marriage Encounter at the convention two years ago, came together to evaluate their efforts at spreading the programme. The Marriage Encounter is a special threeday affair conducted by a team of priests and couples, general ly held at a retreat house, concentrating on the husbandwife relationship and intensively investigating new avenues of communication. The Encounter has seen tremendous growth in a relatively short time, an indication of its practical value and wisdom. The couples, who have been spearheading the Encounter, now see a need for some basic structure and some definite training system for Encounter teams. Another new aspect of CFM is the Movimiento Fami liar Cristiano (MFC), the Spanish-speaking version of CFM. Spanish-speaking Americans came to the U.S. from Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, and the vast majority are Catholics. They bring with them a specific cultural heritage, and a family structure which reflects it. MFC has only been able to reach a small number of these families, but has met with enthusiasm. According to Pedro and Loretta Jurado who direct the programme, "experience shows that Latin families arriving in the United S tates face severe economic, cultural and language problems in our society. They are lonesome and feel out of place in American Churches that do not have a Spanish-speaking liturgy." As a result, they tend to neglect their religion rather than finding in it a l ink with their cultural heritage. A lthough many of the couples in MFC have only moderate incomes and education, the leaders of the movement have a ttempted to bring to Notre Dame some key people from those cities with a Spanish-speaking population for a basic training course. A number of dioceses and local CFM units have funded this first training course.
THEME
The dominant theme of the convention, however, is that of the annual programme. This year's programme, entitled "People Are . . ." is something of a return to fundamentals and a reaching outward at the same time. The Executive Committee made a policy decision a year
ago to give CFM a new ecumenical orientation. Encouraged by the interest of Christian families from other faith communities who were joining local CFM units, as well as by the Episcopal ian groups who were using the CFM programme, the leadership decided to revise the basic CFM programme manual to reflect, and correlate, with the ecumenical involevement. Realizing there are more bonds that unite us, and that the underlying values of Christian family l ife are shared by many Christian Churches, the programme committee has come up with a manual that will s teer the movement toward making the most of our existing bases for unity and exploring new common avenues of understanding and conviction. Family life in America is itself a unifying phenomenon for many people, and can well be an influencing factor in our efforts toward Church unity. The programme committee has drawn upon the f amily life literature of many separated Christian Churches and also on the popular writing of our day. It explores t he themes that can be found in any home on the sociology of the fami ly and t hat are, at the same time, the reflection of the l ived experience of all married couples. The programme formats include communications, husband-wife roles, a woman's place, human sexuality, children, discipline within the family, child rearing approaches, many more. The programme manual has previously been obtainable only by already formed CFM groups, but the new book can be obtained by anyone who anticipates forming a group. Anniversary Celebrations A t the re-union, following its annual communion at the college chapel on September 5, the Old Aquinians Association celebrated the 75th anniversary of the f ounding of the college.

Levander (Provincial of the Western Province), of an honour board, which records the names of the 15 headmasters of the college, the OAA. Bro. Levander said it had been his pleasure to

MISSION NOTES . . THE APOSTOLATE OF PRAYER WE ARE REMISS The September intention is for "the spreading of the Christian message through mass communications media in mission lands." An Indian Communist recently told a Cathol ic missionary: "You Catholics spend your money in erecting buildings, we Communists use it to print books and magazines. "You Cathol ics organise schools and teach children how to read, but you have no books to give them. You Catholics distribute pc. dered milk to children, we Communists distribute the biography of Lenin to al l those who are able to think. "You Catholics say ideas guide the world, but you forget to spread them. If you better understood the times in which we live, you would spend ten times as much to spread your message through modern mass communications media."
PRAYER The September General Intention for prayer is "for special assistance by the Holy Spirit to seminary educators." New Guinea: During the past six years, Father Patrick Murphy, SVD, has guided the development of seminary training in New Guinea, below are the criteria he has followed in this vital and difficult task. Indigenity: The solutions for our problems must grow out of the very soil of New Guinea. European patterns and values should not be the criteria for measuring the adequacy or style of the native priests, or of the New Guinean solutions to problems of training. This, of course, presupposes that, in the very idea of the priesthood, there are certain u nchangeable and fixed elements. High quality: Not only are the highest standards of Christian conduct demanded by the very nature of the case, but also the highest s tandards of achievement in the theological s tudies and intellectual attainment are required consonant with the gifts of the learner. Flexibility: In rapidly changing New Guinea, the best of plans may become obsolete in five years. Hence, flexible solutions to training problems are necessary. C ontinuity: Provisions for theological education in the future must grow out of the history and culture of the country and the background of our students. Continuity also implies permanence. Thus, sound planning in t heological education implies a long-range forecast of the needs of the local Church and of probable solutions. Integration: Care must be taken to integrate the graduates of our seminary with t hose who have received divergent training in other educational systems in the territory. There should be a planned relationship in New Guinea between seminary education and teacher training, between seminary instruc tion and that of the catechists, and between t heological formation and other educational e fforts, both Church-related and secular, especially at university level . Economic practicability: A plan that has built-in high operating and maintenance cosis would be a dis-service to the New Guinean C hurch. What sound arrangement will allow the local Church in New Guinea to assume more of the responsibility and cost of running this institution and supporting the student body? Acceptability: Any plan for theoretical and p ractical training in the regional seminary must gain the acceptance of the local Church in Papua-New Guinea.
WHAT DO WE EXPECT? What then, summarised Father Murphy, do we expect to see in our native priests as they leave the seminary, their training complete? Certainly, we would like to see, in them, a readiness and willingness to investigate, encourage and foster indigenous response to the Gospel of Christ. To instil an attitude of servant -hood, to present the priesthood as a ttitude and service rather than status and r ight: this is what we want to realize in our future native clergy. My acknowledgement and thanks to anonymous donors: for $300 'to maintain and educate a student for the priesthood in mission lands for one year"; for $4 'L.B.S.'; for $1.20 'Grazia'; for &2, $4 and S1.82.
