On his return to Western Australia, he Spent some time in St. Mary's Cathedral, Perth, and then was moved to the Cathedral at Geraldton, where he spent a few months prior to his appointment as Parish Priest of the extensive parish of Carnarvon. His apostolic field extended from Onslow to Roebourne and Port Hedland. He had to travel by ',hip along the North Coast in order to fulfil nis ministry. Later when the North West Air Services were introduced he availed of the advances in a mong the transport to spend more time people he served. What is modern man running from?
Born in Boulder seventy years ago, the eldest of a family of three, Sister Mary Berchmans Bourke was educated at St. Joseph's School and Our Lady's Col lege, Victoria Square, Perth. In 1917 she entered the Convent there and was professed on January 21, 1920. A year later this young Sister was appointed to York where practically the rest of her life was to be spent in God's service as infant teacher, Sacristan, and untiring visitor tc the sick and dying. For almost half a century Sister M. Berchmans prepared the little ones for First Holy Communion and taught them their lessons with characteristic patience and perseverance. Their interests continued to be hers until in turn their children, and their children's children, passed into her capable hands. A mutual love and understanding at all times existed between this devoted Rel igious and the people of York which, to them, would scarcely have been York without her gentle presence among t hem. In this Sister's dedicated life there were, perhaps, outstanding two very human loves —her smal l pupils, who could do no wrong, and her wel l kept garden, which was undoubtedly a thing of beauty. The Sisters of Victoria Square community in general regarded Sr. M. Berchmans with unusual reverence. A strong, silent soul, kind and utterly unselfish, she was a lastinc inspiration. Some months ago ill health made it necessary to recall Sister to St. Joseph's, Wembley, w here her sister, Sr. M. Leonard, has been s tationed for many years. On December 8, on the eve of her departure f rom York, Very Rev. C. P. O'Reilly, P.P., a fter the celebration of Mass, spoke with feeling of Sister to a full congregation in whose name he presented her with a becoming and useful gift as a mark of general esteem. On August 19, after a distressing illness patiently borne, Sister M. Berchmans passed t o her eternal reward. Requiem Mass was sung in St. Joseph's Chapel by Fr. C. P. O'Reilly, C.R.P., in the presence of an unusually large number of priests and religious. To Sister M. Leonard and relatives vie extend deepest sympathy.

NO THEME Instead of being l ike a musical score working out a theme and a climax, it is a series of meaningless, abrupt, unpredictable happenings interspersed with boredom. News is in flight: concentrating on irreverence, joy at the pollution of the holy and, above all, deaths, murders, accidents and suicides as if to be grateful that the flight is over; furthermore, the love of tragedy means life must be beautiful because it is so horrible to others. Marriage is in flight: husbands and wives rarely stay together

He is popularly known as 'Pop', because of his age, and 'Senator' because of the years he spent on the Shire council.

Perth must have regarded the encounter with a "no problem" approach, whereas they now meet Subiaco in t he First Semi Final as a result of their unexpected defeat. • For football followers who crave action, Jack Sheedy's book "My Football Life" will not disappoint. It is just the red-blooded s tory one would expect to find in Australian Rules Football. There wil l always be players on the receiving end of unexpected punches. Suspicions as to what real ly does happen behind the scenes have been brought into the open. The squeamish or the faint-hearted can t ake or leave it. When one is regarded as a colourful type you simply don't let your fans down. "Gentleman Jack" l ives up to his reputation. • The Bulldogs did not reach rock bottom because of their leader's efforts. Hassa Mann had a great season and his know-how wil l show out in the southerners in 1970. • Dennis Marshall 's new hobby is a fascinating one. NOTES . . . Uganda has had native priests for the past 56 years. The first minor seminary was opened at Villa Maria, at present in. the diocese of Masaka, in 1893. In 191 1, the 12 major seminarians were separated from the minor,. and took up residence at Katigondo. Two of them were ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1913, becoming the first native priests in the whole of English-speaking East and Central Africa. In 1933, twenty years after the first ordinations, there were more than 50 native priests in Uganda, and on May 25, 1929, one of them w as chosen as the first Vicar Apostolic of Masaka. The Most Rev. Joseph Kiwanuka, W.F., thus became the first Bishop from thAfrican continent in modern times. I n 1967 statistics give the figure of 280 Ugandan priests out of the 813 working in the country, a figure surpassed by only three A frican countries—Congo-Kinshasa, with 62' native priests, Tanzania with 403, and South Africa with 354 (including those naturalised). The Archdiocese of Kampala and the Diocese of Masaka have particularly high numbers of native priests-97 and 78 respectively.
Seminaries The seminary at Katigondc (Masaka) now houses all the Ugandan major seminarians. It w as founded in 1911 and trained both phi losophers and theologians until 1930. In January 1931 the theologians moved to Gaba, near Kampala, but two years ago they returned to Katigondo when the Gaba seminary buildings were taken over as a permanent Pastoral Institute for Eastern Africa. A new seminary for the theologians is being built a longside the Gaba Pastoral Institute. K atagondo seminary was directed by the White Fathers from the bec;rning, but gradually African priests began to figure among i ts personnel, and its present Rector is African. In looking to the future, we must pay the greatest attention to shortages of housing, lack of jobs, inadequate health care, 'dietary deficiencies and strain on present educational facil ities. Only when we attempt to meet these urgent needs do we pave the way for greater family stability, and create the possibility for married couples to make a free and conscious choice in regard to family size that is consonant with their religious convictions and personal aspirations.

On July 18, 1969, President Nixon sent Congress his message on world population.
This message is a serious one, and it deserves careful study by all Americans. In many ways it seems to be constructive and positive, recognising the complexities of the problem, and offering — at best — some tentative suggestions.
ANALYSIS
The central proposal of the President's message is the establishment of a Commission on Population Growth and the American Future. This Commission
would analyze and make recommendations in three specific areas: (1) the probable course of population growth, internal migration and related demographic developments between now and the year 2,000; (2) the resources in the public sector of the economy that will be expected to deal with the anticipated growth in the population; (3) ways in which population growth may affect the activities of federal, state and local government. The importance of this Commission lies in the fact that it calls for a new look at the problem of population growth, and it also puts the problem in the broadened perspective of overall planning for man's future life on earth. The emphasis throughout the message for a more integrated research effort confronts the assumption—too easily arrived at in the past —that more effective methods of family planning would readily soiye most of our social problems. In stressing concern over the quality of life in the future, President Nixon

Throughout the message, the emphasis on personal freedom of choice in regard to family planning is especially s trong. In his analysis of our present overseas aid programmes, President Nixon stresses that the United States has been wil ling to help other nations establish family policies, but that our policy is to avoid making foreign aid dependent on population control policies. In Populorum Progression, Pope Paul strongly urged that in attempting to meet demographic problems, every effort be taken to avoid violating the freedom of married couples. He also urged that public authorities establish policies that are in conformity with the moral law. President Nixon has recommended that the United Nations take the leadership in responding to world population growth. He promises that the United States would give fullest co-operation and assistance. This is a wise recommendation because it assures the developing nations a greater right of selfdetermination, and it decreases the possibility of any large and successful nation like the United States imposing i ts will on smaller nations to whom it sends foreign aid. It also leads to a greater world understanding of the convictions and customs of all peoples, among whom there are great cultural and religious differences. President Nixon calls for an increased research effort into the various methods of family planning. The popularity and effectiveness of the pill has been seriously questioned in recent months, the IUD has been less than successful, and other forms of contraception are as

The President begins by noting that in 1 830 there were one bil lion people on earth, by 1930 there were two billion, and by 1960, in the short span of 30 years, the total number grew to three bil lion. The rapid rate of growth of the population is due to lower death rates, an increased number of births, to better health care and improved economic conditions. A t the same time, this rapid pace of growth has put great pressure on many of our social institutions, and very often, food production, industrial expansion and overall economic development have fallen behind the rate of growth. Quite obviously, this is especially true in the developing countries, where, despite dramatic breakthroughs in food production, the daily diet is stil l uneven and i nadequate.
