Pope Reviews His Visit To Uganda Despite the never clearing clouds cast by the war in Nigeria, Pope Paul's historic journey to Uganda was a rousing success, perhaps the most successful of the seven journeys of his reign. Certainly the Pope was pleased with it. He could hardly conceal his excitement and pleasure as he addressed the crowds that gathered at Castelgandolfo on Sunday morning of his return from Africa. When he had finished his prepared text he seemed dissatisfied that he had not said enough and had not communicated the tremendous experience that had been his. He continued speaking ex tempore. The Pope's voice took on a special warmth as he spoke of the 'beautiful and luminous eyes of the Ugandese children,' and the thrills of his safari were evident as he threw his hands in the air to indicate the colour and enthusiasm of the dress and dance that greeted him in Africa. "It was the people, the people there, the humble, good, kind people of that country who showed such courtesy and such understanding," he said that

Pope Paul VI, the most travelled Pontiff in history, is pictured above being greeted in India by the Vice-President when on the first of his historic trips abroad. A scene such as this was repeated last month at Entebbe Airport, Uganda, when he was officially welcomed by President A. Milton Obote who acclaimed the visit as an event of momentous importance and of deep religious significance to the people of Uganda as a whole, irrespective of differences in faith.- The Pope's reply invoked blessings upon Africa and expressed the hope that his visit might stir up an immense movement of brotFerly love.

Today with the denial of guilt and with the compassion which is extended to the rapist ather than the raped, very elaborate excuses are found to justfy wrong. Perhaps the lamest excuse in history is that of Aaron. When Moses came down from the Mount and asked his brother why he made the Golden Calf, Aaron said that he just put gold into the furnace and it came out a calf. This was his way of freeing himself from blame. The more modern ways would make an interesting book on humour, if they could be gathered together. Defence of our ego, even when it is undefencible, has a basis in the natural order as a defence mechanism. Doctors have revealed that the difficulty of a heart transplant is that there is a tendency in the body to cast off foreign substances. The t issues and blood cel ls of the body have a tendency to immunize themselves. The organism quickly learns those substances which are friendly and those which are unfriendly. Vomiting is the way the stomach rids itself of that which it cannot assimilate. In the sentient order, "die are drawn to impressions which are agreeable and pleasant, and repel those which are disagreeable and harmful.
IN THE MIND When one comes to the mind, this defence of the organism now begins to operate psychologically. The ego tries to protect either its ego-ideal or the picture that it draws of itself. When the self-portrait is attacked, a person refusing to admit a failure or a wrong, may choose one of three different ways to immunize himself: rationalization, projection and minimization. Suppose a college president has three buildings seized by students, who destroy an expensive computer machine and then burn the files. The President knows what he should do, but wishes to keep the image of being very liberal and also wishes to keep in the good graces of al l the students. To protect this egoideal, as he looks over the debris, he issues the following message: "Academic circles so sorbefacient with analytic prosecution of the quadriphyllous aspects of etiological sciences may neglect to see the upsurge which learning gives to the young. These interests have acer-
bated communications with matriculants. Their opposition and renitent factiousness has galvanized in us the avoidance of oppugnance. Thanks to reflection and theopneusty and despite the destruction of appurtenances and equipage, we shall restore al l students with honours to the university phylum." This is a university way of rational izing a failing to act. Two weeks later, the President resigns in less formal and technical language.
SCAPEGOATS The second defence mechanism is projection, or the throwing of blame on others. Adam blamed Eve; Eve blamed the serpent, and the serpent probably blamed his id. No matter how often a man falls, he generally can find someone who pushed him. One of the great advantages of marriage and of having a secretary is that no matter what comes along, you will always have someone to blame. A j udge said to a prisoner before him: "Your record is disgraceful, and there is only one explanation—alcohol." "I'm glad to hear you say that," said the prisoner, "because everybody else says that it's my fault." The third defence is minimization, or the belittling of failures. "Sure, I flunked out in college, but a diploma real ly means nothing. There is too much emphasis on a sheepskin. Al l that it does is pull the wool over other people's eyes." In the realm of sports, when a team loses, the coach will tell them: "What is important is not that you win, but how you play." A wife who was tired of the boasting of her husband, was asked by her mate: "I wonder how many really great men there are in the nation?" "I'll tell you, my clear," said his wife, "there is one less than you think." Thus we protect life against humiliating experiences, against those remarks which would cut us down to size, which would diminish the false reality we build in our own minds. Does anyone today ever hear of the word "humility"—or the recognition of the truth about ourselves?
Remembering the Kellys It was a sad day, a day of horror, for Father Gibney. He was to l ive forty-five years more and as he grew older he l iked to talk of the years gone by, but there was one subject on which he was reluctant to speak—the Kelly's last stand at Glenrowan. SHOULD POLITICMNS BE GOOD? T he affair of Senator Edward Kennedy, which s tarted with the tragic death of Miss Kopechne and will end God-knows where, raises very much
larger issues than the future of the senator, the doom of the Kennedy family or the American political problems involved in the incident. I t raises the question whether a man's personal a nd private morality has any bearing on his fitness f or the highest pol itical offices.

Down to earth aid in Vietnam Over 22,000 tons of food and clothing were distributed to Vietnamese refugees by Caritas Vietnam in the past year, it was reported at the organization's 4th annual convention in Saigon. Father John Ho Van Vui, national director of Caritas, said the largest amounts of aid distributed by Caritas went to the diocese with the largest concentration of refugees.
Expansion
In its social centre programme, developed and directly supported by Caritas Vietnam, there are 152 medical dispensaries; 44 kindergartens caring for 4,908 small children: 42 orphanages with 4,826 children and 11 old peoples' homes with 1,005 residents. This represents an increase over the previous year when there were 107 dispensaries, 23 kindergartens, 27 orphanages and seven old peoples' homes. These centres are maintained by Caritas and are staffed with their own trained personnel. In his report, Father Ho Van Vui said Caritas Vietnam has two objectives, one short-range and the other long-range, or one of emergency aid and one of permanent aid. "Whenever there are people displaced by war,
Almost every family experiences occasional periods of tension, anxiety, somewhat peaceful co-existence or occasional open hostility. Normal, carefree kids? or poor people, Caritas helps them without discrimination as to belief race or language," he said. "In the present situation the needs of society are great but the means of relief are limited. We depend largely on the assistance of Caritas Internationalis and the Caritas of other countries, especially of West Germany, for our relief mission in our country." A
Two-Fold
The long-range objectives are two-fold, Father Vui pointed out. One is to open more social centres and the other is to train personnel to operate them. Fathre Vui reported that "107 cadres trained by up to the present time Caritas have been dispatched to work for government sponsored social, health and relief exHe programmes.

"However," he added, "the situation and the means are not yet conducive to rapid development. Besides, the need for personnel to take charge of the centres is greater than the supply." Caritas hopes to be able to expand these centres with aid from Caritas in other countries, especially West Germany, he said.

The U.S. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) supplied the food and clothing. The food consisted mainly of milk, cornmeal, flour, rolled oats a nd oil. At the meeting Archbishop Paul Nguyen Van Birth of Saigon was elected president of the national charitable organization and Father Vui was named secretary general. In its school programme Caritas Vietnam supplied bread to 565 schools, with a total of almost 80,000 loaves to 377,980 students. In its vocational centre during the year 1,599 girls were graduated as expert sewing machinists, 1,604 girls qualified to be expert knitters and 265 girls learned to type.

At the same time, Caritas Vietnam will accept h elp from different sources but not at the price of its independence as a charitable organization of the Catholic Church in Vietnam, he added. "Finally, Caritas Vietnam, with its present plans is ready to serve actively all people without imposing conditions, without self-interest and discrimination without in order to substantiate the virtue of Christian charity which the Catholic Church has a mission to carry out in this society," said Father Vui.
The principals in the conflict may be husband and wife, parent (s) and adolescents, teenagers among themselves, and for very brief periods, parents and younger children. although These are not the crises that threaten to disrupt family unity that may be the end result if nothing is done to decrease the tension. Rather, they are the crises that wear away on everyone's nerves and in retrospect very often seem somewhat insignificant. But at the peak moment of the crises, everyone is walking on eggs and some unimportant and t houghtless act can precipitate a ful l scale blow-up. A t this point, perhaps we might point out some of the causes of friction that can arise in any human relationships, but are particularly troublesome within the family circle.
GRIEVANCES One of the principal causes is an underlying grievance or general feeling of discontent. A wife is annoyed because her husband seems to place his job, his family or f riends, his recreation in a position of higher priority than she enjoys. What ranks first is not the problem; her conviction that she is second is the underlying cause of the discontent. So too the teenager who believes that his parents "treat him like a kid." He is expected to assume more and more responsibility, but never seems to merit more respect or acceptance as an emerging adult. Or take t he husband who finds the household tasks f requently undone because his wife is involved in some project that gobbles up her time, and for which he is expected to show recognition and approval. Examples can be multiplied, and in each case the failure to face the problem is a primary factor in intensifying the discontent. Suspicion, envy and jealousy are fellow travellers of the discontent. Perhaps they are the reminders of our self-centredness or pride; perhaps they are the natural gap-fillers when the demands of charity or justice are ignored. Whatever the case may be, these factors tend to push the friction level up. One other cause that occurs quite commonly is impatience. Impatience often bespeaks pride, and results from placing unrealistic or impossible demands on another person. It also flows from a failure to accept another person as he actual ly is, and to demand that he measure up to what I want him to be. This is more commonly the failing of parents who are too dominative and authoritarian in their childbearing practice.
TACTICS So much for the examples; every reader can recall a specific situation that fits the model . The central point that we are making is that although such critical situations should not arise, in fact they often do, and perhaps i t's worthwhile to point out some specific tactics to keep the friction level at a low ebb.
FUNERAL DIRECTORS 61 1158
Perhaps the first thing for a person to do is to look into himself. Am I the source of the problem, or am I—even unwittingly— causing the tension or friction? It's important to remember that friction implies that two substances are rubbing against each other, so honest self-evaluation is the first step for those involved. The next requirement for decreasing the f riction is communication, discussion, dialogue. Both parties must honestly describe their feelings, and each must meet the other with a willingness to understand. The amount of this mutual willingness to understand determines whether the discussion will end up in an argument or a restoration of peace. In order to achieve the mutual understanding, each party must bring to the dialogue a good measure of tolerance. This implies trying to see the other person's viewpoint, not just "putting up" with a bad situation. It also implies a certain tempering of my own assumptions or convictions.
ADJUSTMENT A s the dialogue progresses, mutual understanding builds up and the friction eases, but i t is probably not completely dissipated. Each friction-producing situation should also be a learning situation in which both parties are called to make some adjustment. So, a husband comes to understand that his wife's unhappiness springs from her feeling that she is secondary in his life, and he must reassure her that such is not the case. He may still have to put in long hours at his work, and even be absent from home from time to time. These things she will understand and accept more easily if he shares himself —even in small doses—with her. But no amount of noble motives will make much sense if she has only an inferior place in his scheme of values. The same holds true for the relationship and between parents and children. All adults, especial ly parents, should be helping youngpersters attain their own status as mature their for openings creating means sons. During 1968 there were 43,704 seminarians in mission countries receiving aid from the Society of St. Peter Apostle. Of these, 7,340 were major seminarians and 41,364 minor. There were 421 more major seminarians than in the previous year showing that the
decline in vocations now being experienced in some western countries has not spread to the missions. The above figures do not include either the 419 seminarians from mission countries who are students in Rome (and directly supported by the Sacred Congregation 'de Propanganda Fide') or the seminarians in Australia and New Zealand (872 major), \vho a re supported by their own bishops. Receiving aid from the Pontifical Work were 476 seminaries-85 of them major and 391 minor. Seven new seminaries were openg;1 in 1968. Two of these were in Asia (major seminary in Calcutta and a minor seminary in Colombo, Ceylon), and the other five in Africa: one in Togo for late vocations from Togo, Upper Volta, Guinea, Dahomey and I vory Coast; and four minor seminaries (in Upper Volta, Madagascar, Rhodesia and Congo —Kinshasa).
Distribution The seminaries and seminarians were distributed as follows: 37 major seminaries with A frica 2,407 students (988 theol.). 229 minor seminaries, with 24,665 students. 31 major seminaries, with A sia 4,400 students (2,056 theol.) 129 minor seminaries, with 13,458 students. America 5 major seminaries, with 326 students (131 theol.). 21 minor seminaries, with 2,463 s tudents. 11 major seminaries, with 49 Oceania s tudents (17 theol.). 14 minor seminaries, with 590 students. 149 major seminarians and Europe 188 minor seminarians.
Over 11 Million Dollars During 1968 the Work of St. Peter Apostle distributed $10,934,671 in ordinary aid (for t he upkeep of seminarians) and extraordinary aid (construction of seminary buildings, etc.) To this must be added sums for the upkeep of the College of St. Peter Apostle in Rome and scholarships for priests from mission countries studying in Europe, bringing the total to over 11 million dollars. It should be noted that, of this total, the sum of $5,887,895 was received from the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The rest of the money was received from collections specifically for the Society of St. Peter Apostle.
New Priests During 1968 a total of 645 new priests were ordained in mission countries dependerit on 'Propanganda Fide'; 423 in Asia, 172 in Africa, 31 in America and 19 in Oceania (not counting Australia and New Zealand). The perseverance of seminarians seems to be greater in Asia (and particularly in India and South Vietnam) than in the other continents. In India the seminary of Alwaye alone produced 74 new priests last year, Ranchi 23, Hyderabad 19, Poona 19 and Bangalore 13. In South Vietnam, in spite of the war, 83 of the 570 major seminarians were ordained to the priesthood during the war.
The Local Scene $ 7,448.10 was sent last year from the Archdiocese of Perth to the Society of St. Peter Apostle. Students in the secondary schools and colleges between them col lected S6,814.56. Only $633.54 was offered by the general body of the faithful. Your offering for this most important work would be gratefully r eceived.

Religious T changes
The Christian Television Association has announced that a new format for religious television for Western Australia will begin during Atrgust.
The new programming was agreed to following meetings between the Managers of STW-9, TVW-7 and C.T.A. of W.A. The Christian Television A ssociation was represented at the meetings by its Chairman, The Rverend A. Bolt and delegate, Bishop - elect P. Quinn. The agreement includes the use of "seaters", one minute religious commercials, to be shown at different times
throughout the evening. Normal half-hour programmes and 'reflections' and `meditations' at close of programme. All these programmes will be shown on both 7 and 9. The Director of C.T.A. (Mr. A. Howes) left for Melbourne on July 31 for meetings of C.T.A. of Australia, where it is hoped that a comprehensive policy for Australian religious television on c ommercial channels will be developed.
