The questioners echoed the growing public and medical concern regarding sensational reports in mass media alleging racketeering by very expensive private c linics outside the National Health Service and reports of actual or planned invasions from Europe and the U.S. of abortion seekers under the new permissive British law. Maybe the answer to student unrest is to have a little adult unrest. A beekeeper allowed his bees to swarm all over him, until one day a bee stung him on the nose. With that he thundered: "For that, you will al l get off. "Lack of bee-haviour sent them all back to the beehive. Does student unrest reach such a point of violent abuse that adult unrest may react by sending al l students back to their studies? Does there not exist a
people that it oft goes unnoticed. Edmund Burke expressed it well : "I believe the instances are exceedingly rare of men passing over a clear marked line of virtue into declared vice and corruption. There are sort of middle tints and shades between the two extremes," they slide into it imperceptibly, as one passes from repeated acts into a habit which enchains. Like vice "which seen too oft, we first endure, then pity, then embrace."
LAW IN CHAINS Why such indifference on the part of adults —and an adult in our civilization is one who is 21 years old. Why does juvenile muscle hold adult law in chains? Could it be because, with the i ncrease of abandon to biological and erotic instincts on the part of the young,
constantly cling to their youth or return to it at college reunions and Legion conventions, I had merely withered." I n any case, what is most disconcerting is that in the face of violence, disorder and guns in intellectual circles, the intellectuals sel l out. But why this "betrayal of the intellectuals" which was prophesied by Jules Benda over 40 years ago? The reason very likely is that the intellectuals who administer colleges, have neglected the training of the students' wil ls through discipline, while they were educating them intellectually. When confronted by the will to power, the universities had forgotten that there does exist a wil l trained to resist. TWISTED WILL By a curious twist of history, as training of the wil l has been given up, t he students now restore the will, by

directing it against their masters who were recreant to their duty. They do this by turning will into violence against those who betrayed the total mission of education. The violence of the students has succeeded in imposing the conditions of peace, but neither the will of the students nor the bare intel lectualism of the faculty can make peace. As F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in This Side of Paradise: "Reform won't catch up to t he needs of civilisation unless it is made to. A laissez-faire policy is like spoiling a child by saying he will turn out al l right in the end. He will —if he's made to." But if the intellectuals who had first chance to disprove violence fai led, what is to be said of the school 's plans in those very universities where students were most anti-law? The vocation of law is justice, not the defense of any cause, however wrong, for a fee. The silence of the law schools where there have been disorders is frightening. Mature people need to become restless about this restlessness. If there is any place where the return to democratic processes should start, it is with t hose whose very profession is based on the fact that all Justice is in God, that all authority is derived, and is not born a t the end of a gun or rope or a mob. Now is the time for adult unrest and especially lawyers to supply the crew, for they know how the ship of state should sail .

quality of attention that she can give to her pre-schooler is cut to a minimum, a nd her personal success and the child's learning experience tend to separate them from one another and to deprive the child of needed emotional support a nd acceptance.
A t the same time, one of the errors that we too readily fall into is to assume that organized pre-school activity, carried on in nursery schools with trained teachers, will infall ibly lead to better intel lectual development. Recent studies on the effectiveness of pre-school "schools- show quite clearly that organized programmes are not enough. In fact, it is argued that a s tronger and more enriched relationship between mother and child during the pre-school years will be of far greater benefit to the pre-schooler.
On the other hand, the middle-class mother is more inclined to centre her interest and energy on the pre-schooler, to take special note of each new interest or skill that the child displays, and to make it a cause celebre within the family circle. This contributes to the child's self-image, makes him more a ware of himself as an important person who can do things that merit approval from his parents and family.
.HANDICAP Failure in this area points up one of the major differences among mothers of different class groupings. The mother in t he lower socio-economic group very often is urged to go to work or to obtain specialized training so that she might get a job and add to the family income. A s a result, the amount of time and the

We must remember that some mothers must work just to supply food and c lothing and this is a sorry judgment on an affluent society. Others choose to continue a career, often at the expense of the child's developmental progress. However, despite all that has been said about the importance of the mother's role in pre-school training, l ittle practical advice is given to those mothers who want to do it well. Wilbur Cohen maintains that "mothers should
EDUCATING MOTHER First of all, mothers must be convinced that no child is "born bad- or is doomed to failure. Children may have varying potentials and different abi l ities, but these can be discerned and should be built upon. Instead of day-care centres that are nothing more than babysitting institutions, centres should concentrate on the education of the mother who will herself become the major contributor to the child's education. Parenthetically, many young girls are very positive influences in a young child's life because they already possess good maternal insights and abilities. Mothers should learn that one of the major areas of child growth has to do with the child's play. Watching the child a t play, especially when there are not too many toys around, can indicate the child's ability to improvise and the creativity of his imagination. ONE-TO-ONE Mothers must also spend time speaking and playing with the child in a oneto-one arrangement. This reassures the child and gives a greater sense of selfworth. Having the child—even the two or three year old—help while mother is doing housework is also worthwhile. It doesn't help get the housekeeping done, but it teaches the child to be helpful and to work with someone else. It's a strange paradox of our culture that parents, and mothers especially, tend to pass up the educational oppor-

In reality, parents should be more influential prior to school, and should force the child into greater reliance on himself as he progresses through the school years. FATHERS TOO One last point should be made here. A lthough this column has concentrated on the mother's role, this does not mean that fathers are free of responsibility. Although the father has less time and opportunity than does mother, he must s til l show interest and encouragement. He should try to spend some smallet segments of time alone with the preschooler, so that he can note things that his wife may have missed, and so that the child can feel the effect of his approval as different and separate from that of mother. The interesting thing that comes through in al l the research is that mothers—in all class groups—are doing a highly creditable job without any special ized training. They seem to know this and to overlook the possibility for self-improvement. I suspect that many w ho read this column may blink a little a t some of its suggestion, convinced that an unmarried non-parent doesn't know what a helpful 2; year old can do to a house. Maybe so. OUT AND ABOUT WITH V.C.W. "IN THIS WORLD"
CHAPLAIN'S COMMENT
"One of the hazards of being a Christian with a good education is that we think that we have the answers. We need not have felt the anguish of the situation. We can remain completely unconcerned for the people involved. We can give the answers without asking the questions." Fr. John McKinnon of Ballarat put this thought before the delegates at the Y.C.W. National Council in Broken Hill.
We have a variety of youth groups in Perth, and no two are the same. To the writer this is not a cause for anxiety. I t is simply that each is a genuine attempt to meet a local need in the right terms. Even in a small city like Perth the needs of parishes differ widely—and the differences will get bigger as the city grows.

"The Record" Sporting Round FOOTBALL COMMENTS ( By TIPIT)
• Rumour is rife, that Carlton Footbal l Club will exchange big John Nicholls, their ace ruckman, for Perth's champion rover Barry Cable; if the swop comes off, both clubs will have an acquisition second to none. C "Get that ball," said Ron Barassi when he played for Melbourne as a ruck-rover in the 1 950s. The followup ,the disposal, is where footbal lers fall down. It seems common practice here for players to kick the bal l to an opponent. • "Sititng is a strain" as applied to players on the Reserves bench. They haven't got this al l on their own. The torrid torments of s tanding fans knows no limit either. • Old Easts, and Swans have given football a shot in the arm, with their unexpected victories last Saturday. Their clash at Bassendean this Saturday should be a thril ler. O The Demons are breathing down the Cardinals neck for that coveted second position. Success from now on, will only be obtained the hard way. • Young Easts and West Perth are injury prone at the crucial time of the season. Here's hoping their luck wil l change before the busines end commences. • "Most players conform" they say in regard to street attire and hairstyles. Wel l this seems unimportant, when one considers the number of players who are set up for shirtfronts. • The fitness of footbal l 's boundary and central umpires is very noticeable. Footie fans complain in this regard without real justification. • Barry Cable intends to end his football career as a coach. The little champion seems a natural for this role, with his all round know-how. e The revival of the place-kick has been contemplated recently. The popularity of this t ype of kicking is extremely doubtful from a spectator's point of view. They already hunger for more action. • Every now and then, an annoying dog shows up on one of our football ovals. Why not a dog-catcher in attendance at al l grounds? • Another recent premiership prospect bit t he dust last weekend when Swans took the Maroons apart. • Rumours are spreading like wildfire these days. Graham Farmer is supposed to be returning East in a few years. The Cardinals' coach with his reticent style, is probably more interested in securing his first pennant flag. East Fremantle snatched victory from the Cardinals in a thrilling finish. Old Easts won 1 1-11 to 11-9. The first half was all West Perth and the 2nd half belonged to the blue whites, who fought back from a well nigh impossible position. Other results, Swan Districts 21-10 d. Subiaco 10-13. East Perth 16-15 d. South Fremantle 12-7. Perth 24-22 d. Claremont 1 2-10. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY, JULY 19 Swan Districts v. East Fremantle at Bassendean—SWAN DISTRICTS. East Perth v.
