WITH THE (ROSS OR WITHOUT IT! The recent discourse of the Holy Father at a general audience has once more laid the emphasis on self-control and sacrifice as part of the Christian way of life. The Pope was dealing with the postconciliar mentality that Christianity was easy. "Easiness; the word is seductive," he said. "It is also in a certain sense acceptable, but it can be ambiguous. It can constitute an apology for the Christian life. It can be a distortion or a paradox." While many will applaud the tremendous technological advances of the present century and while many more will benefit in time and leisure from methods and appliances resulting from these achievements, the mistake can be made in making these things the "be all and the end all." This attitude results in an ever questioning mentality regarding the usefulness and necessity of religion, and a continuous whimpering regarding the laws and postulates of Christianity. The medical profession today candidly admits that one of the biggest single pathologically incapacitating factors in life can be grouped under the term "neuroses." Americans speak of "neuroses" as maladjustments. The Spanish vernacular explains the term linguistically as the illness of one who is "decentred." The problem then is to return to the centre and live as human beings. If neurosis is an illness of the soul which has lost its direction, a reflection on the code of teaching and law of Christ as explained in the Sermon on the Mount will show that not only is there direction and purpose in Christ's teaching, but also personal fulfilment and contentment. "My yoke is sweet and my burden light," says Christ. Herein He throws man a challenge, a thought-provoking opportunity, and again a comfort and solace. One extreme in Christianity says that it should appeal to man's ease. Life should be as comfortable as possible, with Christianity "bolstering up our selfishness and indolence" as one author puts it. The other extreme is full of the persecuted or martyr complex. It seeks a Christianity without a cross. The New Testament message, however, speaks of the need to put on the armour of faith and be soldiers of Christ. Only thus is it possible to work with people who have a carefree attitude to the Christian faith. Therein lies the sterling, perfecting quality of Christianity. What Christ means by the sweetness of His burden is that His teaching and laws are not irksome, but call for personal decision and determination. Thus they will be a natural thing for man to live if he is going to live an abundant life, through charity and service. Besides, Vatican II calls Christians to up-date their faith and its relevance to life. This means a removal of the accretions of the centuries in the sphere of worship, and the discarding of attitudes inconsistent with charity and service. It does not call on us to unchain men from the traditional scholastic formulations sanctioned by the teaching authority of the Church. When these teachings are part of the will of God and when these laws have their foundation in Him, advocating a change or complete rejection amounts to anarchy. Pope Paul in speaking of the desire for an easy life without the cross was emphasising this as the motive for opposition to his Encyclical "Humanae Vitae" and the basic cause of revolt in the Church. While many accidental or fringe ceremonials and attitudes must be changed in order that the substance may be meaningful to modern men, to the Christian who still carries his cross in private and public life, Christ must still be the "light to his mind and a guide to his feet." The cross is at the centre of our lives and is the fructifying fountain of Christianity.

Ties That Bind

As Jack Gould of the New York Times noted in his critique of the show, this television experience "tilted the scales overwhelmingly in favour of abortions conducted under medical supervision in sanitary hospitals, rather than illegal operations performed with crude instruments by the untrained." But the tilting of the scales was due to a heavy thumb rather than to an objective presentation of the facts or a c lear delineation of the real issues. Abortion law change is a hotly contested subject in our society, and allegislation during this past year, the though 47 legislatures were open to new matter is so complex and the implications are so involved, that lawmakers in 43 of the 47 states refused to accept the thesis that any woman should be able to obtain an abortion whenever she pleases, or that the question could be easily re-

duced to the formula proposed by the American Law Institute's Model Penal Code.

DIALOGUE QUITE obviously, the question of abortion law change is one that requires consideration from lawyers, doctors, social scientists and ethicians. A continuing dialogue and accurate public presentation of the various viewpoints should be provided to legislators and to the general public. But ABC's presentation fell far short of the ideal, and served—rather than to clarify the issues—to further confuse them. A few illustrations are herewith in order. Among the specialists who dramatically called attention to the matter of abortion was Percy Sutton from New York. Touring the slums, Mr. Sutton spoke of his concern for the poor, and indicated his determination to see abortion laws libz.,ralised on their behalf. T he impression given was that easy abortion laws would give the poor the necessary opportunity and options to have fewer children. Mr. Sutton also described abortions as a way whereby a woman might "get rid of unwanted seed;" on both scores Mr. Sutton showed his lack of understanding. Easy abortion laws are not the primary way to alleviate poverty, and hardly anyone thinks of abortion merely in terms of male seed. DR. ALLEN BARNES of the John Hopkins Medical Centre was presented as the

medical authority on the subject. He described the ferti l ised ovum in its early s tage of implantation as a piece of tissue and compared it to the appendix. Although most people are wil ling to admit the difficulty of pinpointing when human life begins, Dr. Barnes seemed more dogmatic than any philosopher or theologian in his approach. He submitted that morality is a matter of opinion, that abortion should be considered in the same way as any other "therapeutic weapon," and he stressed the good medical care given the patient in the hospital. He also made a strong point of rile fact that the patient can usually leave the hospital the day after the operation seemingly without need of further care, even though present figures indicate that the vast majority of women obtain abortions for reasons of psychological health. Did Dr. Barnes really mean that the surgical operation solved the emotional problems within the brief span of three days? A rather long portion of the programme was given to the story of a young woman who contracted German measles in the early months of pregnancy, and thereafter gave birth to a child who had multiple handicaps. The young woman was honest and quite heroic, and the camera was dramatically poignant in its focus on the child. The dialogue failed to note effectively that the discovery of a new vaccine decreases the danger of foetal deformity due to the mother's being exposed to German measles. FATHER David Granfield, a priest-lawyer, was also interviewed, apparently to provide a Roman Catholic viewpoint. Despite Father Granfield's knowledge of the general topic and his expertise in the field of law, his remarks centred on ensoulment, and were hardly an accurate statement of Catholic moral teaching or of the reasons for which the American Bishops have clearly stated their opposition to the present liberalisation efforts. I wondered why the ABC presentation did not present it in its entirety, or at least give the substance of the debate. Instead, the ABC show presented Mr. Blumenthal as the compassionate, liberal, informed specialist on the topic. His speeches and pleas were the major focus. The programme failed to present Assemblyman Martin Ginsburg who also spoke compassionately, honestly and a fter due study of the bill minutes before Mr. Blumenthal. His speech called a ttention to the weakness of the Blumenthal bill. Affirming that he favoured some change in the New York law, Mr. Ginsburg, crippled by polio since he was 1 3 months old, emphasised that a law that al lows termination of the l ife of the child in the womb because of possible deformity can be easily and logically extended to allow termination of l ife a fter birth also.

POWER AND PERSUASION MR. GINSBURG's testimony was powerful and persuasive, but it was absent from the ABC presentation. Instead, the viewer was treated to a highly emotional speech by Mr. Blumenthal, in which he said that the last person he saw when he went to sleep at night was his wife, and the first person he saw in the morning was his wife, and he did not want to tell her that she had to bear a child if she didn't want to. What Mr. Blumenthal and the ABC failed to see was that the eloquent plea was an argument for contraception, but not for abortion. Or are Mr. Blumenthal and the ABC trying to tell us that they one and the same thing?

SOCIAL PICTORIAL The fourth annual Star of the Sea Ball, sponsored by Cottesloe Youth Club was held a t the Mosman Reception Centre on June 19. Over 270 Cottesloe parishioners and their friends, young and old, attended the ball. They raised over $600 for relief work in Biafra. There were eleven entrants for the title of "Miss Cottesloe" and the winner was K aren Peacock of Nedlands, a student physiotherapist and an active member of the Cottesloe Youth Club. The judging, undertaken by Mrs. Nora Mahoney, Mr. Frank Walsh, Mr. Wally Purnell and Miss Caroline Noble, took place before the ball at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Mahoney. Miss Noble announced the winner (Photos by Kevron) during the ball.

If they ever feel like being one, they must remember they're in the wrong business to be a coward. Recently Frank Bird Chief Executive of the W.A.F.N.L. remarked, that some day umpires could be replaced by computers; that could never happen — football must always have a scapegoat.
