TO YOUTH POPE PAUL VI in a message addressed principally to the youth of the world on the occasion of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Sunday,- April 20, applauds their "absolute and authentiq sense of values" and throws down the challenge of the priestly vocation in the modern world. 'WE APPEAL to you, the youth, who today more than ever can and should , hear the voice of Christ calling you, pointing out to you the regions of the world that are close to ripeness, ready for the harvest, the regions where priests, missionaries, sisters, given over to the contemplative life and the active apostolate are so badly needed and yet are waiting. THE POPE went on to say that the youth of our time were better disposed and more suited to understand the call of vocation now, because they are more generous and given to authentic values. They want deeds and not mere words. They want to give personal service. They want to build a better world.
Courses on the Ovulation Method of family planning are now being held regularly in the lecture theatre of St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco, under the sponsorship of the Majellan Groups and the Catholic Marriage Guidance Bureau. They are well attended, as "The Record' photographer found when he visited one recently. The speaker on this occasion was Dr. P. 0 Nara. These courses, a f ollow-on from Dr. John Billings' notable series of lectures last year, are designed to give information and practical help to married people who wish to plan their family. Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses
Nothing so much harms youth as the loss of mystery in life. Sex is mystery, and that is why it is akin to religion in its depths. But how is it a mystery? A mystery is freighted with two inseparable aspects: one physical, the other spiritual; one visible, the other invisible; one known, the other unknown. Other things in life have this mysterious quality; a word is a mystery: physically it is a series of vibrations which a dog can hear better than a man; spiritually, the word has "meaning" which the dog does not get, but man does. A handshake is a mystery. If I clasp one of my hands with the other, there
is no mystery, but if I clasp yours, there is. The latter has an invisible content which the first does not, namely, greeting or friendship. A kiss is a sacrament, or a sign of affection, but its invisible meaning is gone, if violently s tolen by a stranger. Religion has many sacraments, such as baptism, in which a material thing is used as a vehicle for the communication of the spiritual.
THE DEEPEST CHANNEL Sex is a mystery because there is something physical about it and known: everyone is male and female. But there is something spiritual about it too, for sex is the deepest channel which the love of one person communicates to another. That is why sex is no mystery to animals; it is physiological, seasonal a nd biological. A rooster never gets a neurosis because a hen does not love love him; a pig is never psychotic because a sow makes "piggy eyes" at another pig.

Only in man does that mystical quality enter, in which sex becomes the last surrender of a person to a person. To separate the physical from the personal is profanation of the sacred, a kind of sacrilege, like throwing a firebrand into a church just to enjoy the heat, the crackle of flames, the tumbling edifice and the seeming conquest at the sight of carbon and ashes.
MYSTERY OF SEX Nothing smells worse than a lily that festers.

The mystery of sex is also revealed by contrasting it with eating. Why is it no one ever minds seeing people eat in public, such as at a sidewalk cafe in Paris or at a picnic. But there is an inner revulsion at seeing love-making or sex practiced in public or in the theatre. Why? Because eating does not have that inner quality of being deeply personal, but making love does. Sex being the most vibrant chord of love, involves j ust two persons. To take that which i s personal and make it public, or to expose it to the crowd or what in Latin is called the "Vulgus" is to make it common; this is the essence of the vulgar — the profanation of a secret. I n reacting to the Victorian era where sex was taboo, we arrived at the other extreme when it was contended that if we only brought it out in the open, we would do away with all the neuroses and sickly notions attached to it. Well, i t has been publicised, propagandised
and magnified, but we are not more nor, mal. We analysed the meter, but we lost the meaning of the poem. We proved that a violin sonata is only the drawing of the hair of a dead horse across the entrails of a dead cat, but somehow we lost the ravishments of harmony.
THE MUTTON CHOP C. S. Lewis has beautifully portrayed how this loss of mystery has ruined sex, "You can get a large audience together for a strip-tease act — that is, to watch a girl undress on the stage. Now sup, pose you came to a country where you could fill a theatre by simply bringing a covered plate on the stage, and then slowly lifting the cover so as to let everyone see, just before the lights went out, that it contained a mutton chop on a bit of bacon, would you not think that in that country something had gone wrong with the appetite for food? And would not everyone think there Was something equally queer about the state of the sex instinct among us?" Why is it that parents find it so difficult to explain sex to their children? Not the physiological side, that is easy enough, but the children cannot understand the deep meaning of the love which exists between them. Being invisible and spiritual, this is difficult to communicate. There is a world of difference between prose and poetry, be. t ween the organic and the personal. Sex will either be a mystery, or else it will be the kind of theatre on Broadway to which you cannot take your chi ldren.

by Father T. McHugh THERE IS little question that the world in which we live is affected by a crisis of authority. Trite as the expression may seem, the proliferation of riots, student uprisings, political revolution and tension in the Church are all indications that those with authority are being challenged — and sometimes overthrown by those who are supposed to be governed. In reality, the crisis arises not from the fact of the challenge, but in almost every instance from the lack of understanding of what authority is, and how it should be utilised by those who possess it.
TENSIONS As Father John McKenzie explains in his book, "Authority in the Church," there must always exist a certain tension between authority and freedom and in real human situations — political, ecclesiastical, and familiar — those who wear the mantle of authority are constantly reminded that man is free by nature, i.e., by the wise plan of God, and although their position may place fewer restrictions on the exercise of freedom, freedom is not something that they give or take away as they please. Correspondingly, authority is not some-
thing that they can be ambivalent about, nor can it be merely interpreted in terms of power. Before moving to a discussion of how authority is exercised in the family, there are two important points to keep in mind. First of all, authority in the family is based on the nature of the family and its needs. The family is different from other voluntary associations or groupings; every person is born into a family, and if the family is to achieve its purpose — the personal fulfillment and maturity of al l its members — there must be a clearly discernible, functioning authority. Family authority then is dominative or paternal, and is more structured and detailed in its exercise than authority in the state or in any other society. The second point that we must keep in mind follows from this. Because family authority is specifically different, the crises that effect authority in the civil community, the church, the university or anywhere else, do not herald a breakdown in family authority. In plain terminology, parents should not run scared because authority is challenged, nor should they feel that they must inevitably back down when they a re challenged. Indeed, the proper function of authority in the home may well be the saving grace for other societies in the future. These two points merit emphasis because honesty requires us to acknow-
ledge that authority has been ineptly used or positively abused in the state, the university and in the Church. In fact, a major problem of authority in the Church is the failure to distinguish the authority given it by Christ to pursue its spiritual mission, and that which has been built up in the course of time to enable it to function as a temporal society. It is in this second area that the abuses have crept in, and changes must be made, but this does not deny or ignore the authority given by Christ, nor does it free the Church from the tension spoken of previously between freedom and authority.
MISUSE Let us return now to authority in the family. It is called dominative or paternal, although both terms are inadequate. In thinking of the family we must think first of the conjugal bond between husband and wife which is built on freedom and mutual responsibility. Each desires for the other maximum freedom and opportunity for personal development. This leads to more perfect fulfillment as a husband and wife — as a person. In approaching their children, they will have the same general goal, that is, to assure the maximum opportunity for personal development and maturity. The actual working use of authority is very much left to the mutual determination and abilities of parents. Some parents will be systematic or somewhat strict, others will be more free-wheeling or somewhat permissive. But the family is not a free-floating democracy, and al l its members are not equal. In the early years of a child's life, before he knows v.-hat freedom really is, his growth is subject to rules and regulations.
LEARNING FREEDOM Parents are quite dominative, but are continuously relaxing the restrictions in order to help the child understand freedom and make use of it in a responsible fashion. As the child becomes more a ware of his relationships and respon-
sibilities to other members of the family the parents can become more demo,' cratic in their exercise of authority When they are convinced that the child' has become mature, authority has given way to a sense of order. So for instance a father doesn't ordinarily assume re'. sponsibil ity or exercise authority in re. gard to a 25-year-old son who lives at home. Let me emphasise the primary prin. ciple in regard to family authority. It's force derives from the necessity to in. sure the maturity of the children. To some degree, parents are in command of the maturing process, and should do all to guide and direct it, and finally to respect its accomplishment. At the same time, this is where parents often make a critical mistake. Although they must guide the child's maturing, this does not mean that they can control or determine it. In fact, they may not even recognise that the youngster is mature without the opinion of others. They must be open to and respect that opinion. The young person's friends, younger brothers arid sisters, teachers, the parish priest, all see the young person in different situations. What they say may be the reassurance that is needed, or t he confirmation that the parent is right. When a 17-year-old boy asks to buy a car, or an 18-year-old girl becomes engaged, a parent may instinctively feel that the youngster is not yet mature. The feeling can be confirmed as right or argued against as inaccurate, but the wise parent must reach out for information rather than take a stand and refuse to reason. This discussion of authority has been somewhat theoretical, and next week will lead to a consideration of some practical impl ications. Mir

In Perth on her way to the East Asian Council of Churches Conference at York, where she will be the representative, Miss Rosemary Goldie called to see His Grace the Archbishop.
D fficial Vatican
Back in Western Australia for the East Asian Conference of Churches at Faversham House, York, is e xpatriate Miss Rosemary Goldie. A Sydney woman, Miss Goldie has been away from Australia for more than twenty years, spent entirely in the service of the Church. She first left Australia to study at the Sorbonne from 1936-38 coming home during the war years to work for the Grail Movement. In 1945 Miss Goldie returned to a bleak post war Paris for two years post graduate study. From there she went to Freiburg, Switzerland, joining the staff of "Pax Romana," the international movement for Catholic students before moving to Rome in 1952 as a member of the permanent committee of the Congress on the Lay Apostolate, of which she was appointed Executive Secretary in 1959. Now a lay consultor to the Secretariatt for Christian Unity, Miss Goldie is one of two Vatican representatives at the Faversham House conference. Australia will be represented by Perth's Y.C.W. fulltimer, Brian Carlon. Miss Goldie is one of a number of women who are gradually making a mark in the lay sphere of Church life and who are being picked for high lay offices in the Church on their personal merits, irrespective of their sex. Two others, who are full members of the Permanent Commission for Justice and Peace, are Britain's Lady Jackson ( Barbara Ward, the economist) and Miss Marga Klompe, who holds ministerial rank in the Dutch government. Also outstanding are Miss Juanita Pereira of Ceylon, a lay consultor to the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples and a member of the Board of the World Movement of Christian Workers and Miss Gladys Parentelli, of Uraguay, former Vice-President of the International Movement of Catholic Rural Youth, now in Rome working for FAO. In Australia, Mrs. Wal Chandler, 0.B.E., of Sydney, has recently been appointed to the key position of National Secretary of the National Council of the Lay Apostolate. Speaking to "The Record" this week, Miss Goldie emphasised that although they are outnumbered by men in the lay council of the Church, women are bieng offered, and are accepting, that increasing role which is necessary to a full contribution to the life of the Church by the laity.

Cold water wash saves money From next week West Australian Housewives will save $5 to $15 on their quarterly power bills — by turning off the hot water tap in the laundry and also cutting their washing time by half. A chemical research laboratory has produced a detergent made specifically for use in cold water, which washes clothes as clean as in hot water, thereby shattering an age old tradition. Cold power laundering has the following advantages—
• Obviates
common hot water hazards like shrinkage, colour fading and stain setting. • safe for nappies, synthetics and woollens • removes all dirt from any fabric and makes clothes as white and bright as hot water laundering • spares the inconvenience of working for hours in a hot steamy laundry • eliminates the worry of the dangers of boiling water and children • gentle to hands as there is no variation to water temperatures. Can also be used for blankets, dish washing, f loors and the family car. In Kingswood N.S.W. several hundred housewives undertook the largest and most original The Annual General f ield test in Australian marketing history and meeting will be held on a fter a three month's test period three-quarters Sunday, May 18 at 1.30 of them preferred cold water washing to hot. p.m. at the Franciscan Scientific tests in the U.S.A., where 12 million Missionaries of Mary Rehouseholders use cold power laundering, proved treat House 16 Hampton bacteria is only killed in water at boiling that Road, Victoria Park. competition has butchers Mag*ic P a n tr y worried a— Thousands 231000 join food revolution QUALITY FOOD AT BULK DISCOUNT PRICES
2 Million lbs. of Meat
MAGIC PANTRY processes and sells 2 million lbs. their home delivery food service, and it is incre of meat every year through sales that have been taken away from the high asing every day. These are -priced retail butchers and they are beginning to feel the impact of this loss. 11 2 / Million lbs. of Perishables
MAGIC PANTRY buy all their foodstu ffs in bulk quantity. As a result, their discount pricing guarantees at least 17% to 30% below normal retail price. An added benefit of this bulk buying is that it enables MAGIC PANTRY to demand consistent top quality in their foodstuffs.
The result of this impact is that the butche rs are complaining about unfair trade practices. What they really mean is that they can't keep up with the c ompetition. For apart from this colossal meat order, MAGIC PANTRY sells 11'2 million lbs. of fish, fruit, poultry, vegetables, etc. — right in the home.
The MAGIC PANTRY bulk grocery department handles the equivalent of the sales of a medium-sized supermarket. This grocery service makes MAGIC PANTRY the complete home food service with over 1,000 items to choose from.
Competition Means Growth
The result to our customers of this complete food service is guaranteed quality with economy every time they order.
The history of Australian trade is that it was built on the system of free enterprise, and the very essence of free enterprise is competition. Without compe tition there is no growth and you the customer suffers, but with healthy competition there is healthy growth. The result is that the customer reaps the benefits of improved service and quality not to mention the existence of "value -for-money", in other words economy.

Disturbing New Venture
Any new venture such as MAGIC PANTRY which offers a magnificent service, based on a real need is bound to disturb the status quo. And until the advent of MAGIC PANTRY there had been a status quo, an air of complacency, and high profits in the retail food marketing business. Now that MAGIC PANTRY has introduced a revolutionary system of home provisioning, the retailers are beginning to fear for vested interests, and high profit margins. And
vested interests are what they are, with no interest in what the customer really wants and needs.
These testimonials and hundreds more like them can be inspected at the offices of the MAGIC PANTRY FOOD SERVICE at any time during office hours.
As a result the bulk discount priced quality f ood service of MAGIC PANTRY is causing dissatisfaction amongst the retailers' customers and the resultant lost trade.
