PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTITUDES TOWARD LIFE AFFECT BELIEFS. AN AGE OF PEACE STRESSES ONE TRUTH OF FAITH RATHER THAN ANOTHER. Take, for example, Easter which teaches us that no suffering is final, and that patient endurance of the human situation prepares for glory of body and soul a fter death. in the early centuries this truth made millions see the crown through the cross, and death as the condition of life. Only when the seed falls to the ground and dies, does it bring forth new life. As Paul said . "If Christ is not r isen, then we are, of al l men, most miserable." The grave scandal in the first century was the crucifixion. Why should Truth be crucified and wrong be on a throne? The death sentence imposed on an
I nnocent Man was a stumbling block to the Jews who felt that their leader should be a conqueror; and it was foolishness to the Greeks because Christ was not a philosopher.
THE SCANDAL But today it is not Calvary which s tands in the way of faith; it is the Resurrection. Good Friday the modern man can absorb, because he sees injustice, violence, muggings, scourgings around him like a garment. But Easter and the resurrection from the dead, he rejects. Living in a dread that some hot-headed fool may trigger a weapon which already has the possibility of over-killing the population of the earth a dozen times, he cannot see much hope. He sees the poor and the socially disinherited pushed around, and political and social leaders given the quick death of a bullet. The first Good Friday was the scandal of seeing God pushed off the earth He had made, into a garbage heap outside the city; but this gives no black-out to modern faith, because we are used to clenched fists, degradation in slums and bigotry in high places. The empty tomb is what scandalises
today; it is not the Pierced Christ we cannot accept, but the Risen Christ. We can understand oaks rotting, but we cannot understand acorns budding into oaks. The literature of despair from K afka to Camus, the solemn glum faces of the young dancers staring at one another like birds hypnotised by snakes, the passion for nudity which unwittingly affirms that there is nothing more to be revealed — all make the hope of another life a belief to madness near allied. But why should the scandal of the Cross which troubled the first days, and the scandal of the Resurrection which troubles our own, be divorced and separated? Do they not really go together? Those who finally came to believe in the Risen Christ were themselves defeated men. None of His followers were expecting the Resurrection: they were so gloomy after hearing the accounts of eye-witnesses that they attributed it to the imagination. Suppose you were asked to prove your legitimacy. Could you do it against a clever lawyer who might even "prove" your birth certificate was forged? You know it by the difference your parents' sacrifices, care and love have made in your life. The Risen Lord does the same when He enters our lives to save us. We s tart with the greatest defeat the world has ever known and the darkest gloom that ever fell on a heart: "My God. Why hast Thou forsaken Me?" by Father T. McHugh DURING the past few years there has been a well-organised — but not too successful — c ampaign to liberalise the abortion laws of the various States. THESE laws prohibit abortion except when necessary to safeguard the mother's life or physical health, and initial attempts a t l iberalisation sought to extend the exceptions to instances where continuation of pregnancy would endanger physical or emotional health, where the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest or where there was possibility of the child being born with some defect. This new proposal, which followed the suggestions of the American Law I nstitute's Model Penal Code, became the model of new laws in many States, and it also became the basis for dis-
cussion of abortion law change. Those in favour of liberalisation argued that t he old laws were so strict that they were being ignored and the number of illegal abortions was constantly increasing. Those opposing liberalisation argued that the unborn child has a right to life protected by the law, and that in discussing any proposed change, that right could not be done away with. They further argued that any new law should lead to a decrease in abortions rather than an increase. An immediate problem was the absence of any reliable statistics on the overall number of abortions, an a general inability to obtain accurate information. In the midst of the unresolved debate, five States — California, Colorado, Maryland, North Carolina and Georgia -- passed liberalised laws that fairly well followed the A.L.O. proposal, while in a dozen or more other States, at• tempts at liberalisation failed.
NEW TURN
Now, however, the question of abortion law change has taken a new and radical turn. In California, there is now a case before the Supreme Court in which the defendant argues that the law is unconstitutional because it limits
the doctor's right to what he thanks is medical ly feasible. Moreover, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) maintains that the present laws reflect the religious teaching of one segment of the population and are therefore a violation of the First Amendment. I f the California law were declared unconstitutional, other laws could be similarly attacked. But it's a slow process. Meanwhile, there has been a growing agitation for total repeal of all abortion laws, on the grounds that abortion is a medical procedure that should be left to the physician's competent judgment, and that present laws are unfair to women because they limit her right to determine her own fertility by not allowing her to abort a child that she doesn't w ish to bear. These arguments were forcefully stated at a National Conference on Abortion Laws held in Chicago in mid-February, and also in a legislative committee hearing in New York City, where a feminist group completely disrupted the meeting. The outcome of this new trend is the formation of the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws ( NARAL) which will lobby in State legislatures for total repeal . It is painfully clear that nothing short of abortion on demand is now the legislative objective, and any other law will be acceptable only as opening the door to the more radical proposal. This, of course, presents serious problems in States like New York, Connecticut, Nevada, Missouri, Iowa and others where t he A.L.I . proposal has been under consideration.
VALUE OF LIFE
I t also presents serious problems in t he country at large. The American people place a high value on human life and the Bill of Rights and our whole system of law have always sought to protect each person's "right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Members of the legal profession quickly
recognise the danger to our whole way of life when we grant any person — with legal justification — the power to terminate the life of another. Physicians have also noted the seriousness of abortion law change. In a policy statement in 1968, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists firmly stated "that the College will not condone nor support the concept that an abortion be considered or performed for any unwanted pregnancy or a s a means of population control. It is emphasised that the inherent risk of such an abortion is not fully appreciated by many in the profession and certainly not by the public . . ." In regard to the discussion of women's rights, Juan J. Ryan, President of the National Right to Life Committee, notes that "we cannot speak of one person's rights without looking to correlative responsibilities and the rights of other persons. The child in the womb has a right to protect the lives of its citizens. to decide about terminating the life of the child; the doctor has a right to determine what is medically responsible and ethically right and society has a righ tto protect the lives of its citizens. These rights are completely ignored." Catholics are usually characterised as the only ones opposed to abortion law change. Writing in the New York Times Edward Fiske shows that Protestants a nd Jews also oppose abortion law change and he notes that Catholics are hardly responsible for the present laws. In a sense, the raising of theological convictions is not directly relevant to the question of changing the present laws. More at issue is the question of how greatly we value human life and whether we can maintain that value. Our present laws now safeguard ALL life before birth. Victoria Square on March 26. They had gathered for a solemn Requiem Mass in the presence of His Grace the Archbishop for Sister Mary Anthony Brown. Concelebrants were Fathers D. Lyons, of St. Columban's Foreign Mission Society, a cousin, L. Baccini and M. Ford.
Sister Anthony was born 76 years ago at Kilmihil, near Kilrush, County Clare. She came from a family with a teaching tradition, and it was natural that she should wish to continue it. She was a competent and devoted teacher, who gained the respect and affection of her many pupils at Our Lady's College, Victoria Square, Bassendean, Midland and Victoria Park. Perhaps nowhere was she more successful than in the time she spent at St. Joseph's Orphanage, where she gained the complete confidence and love of many small children. Sister Anthony's relatives included many priests and Religious. Her brother, the late Father Tom Brown, served in Christchurch, New Zealand, where her cousin, the late Bishop Patrick Lyons, was bishop. She is survived by another brother who lives at Alva Cross, Cooraclare. In recent years ill-itealth and failing eyesight had curtailed Sister Anthony's activities.

Derby Legion of Mary has an international flavour. The Praesithum of "Our Lady of Fatima" met under the direction of Father G. Malino, a German, while Father Finnegan is away sick. Apart from white Australians, those present included an Australian Aboriginal and Dutch, Rhodesian and Polynesian members. Legionaries do a lot of hospital visitation and meet boats calling at the contact port to make with Catholic seamen and passengers. Ninety-one-year-old Mrs. Alice Swan had reason to be the proudest lady in Finchingfield, England, recently. Her grandson, Dennis Kestel of East Fremantle, fulfilled a promise he had made her some years ago that he would one day sing for her. Mr. Kestel an operatic tenor not only did that, in between f:alfilling singing engagements in London, he gave a recital at the Finchingfield parish church. Accompanied by pianist John Gale, Mr. Kestel sang modern works as well as operatic arias by Romberg, Puccini and others. A former student of Christian Brothers' College, Fremantle, where his singing ability was early recognised, Mr. Kestel has given many local concerts over recent years. He eventually decided to take the advice of his former musk teacher Brother O'Neill and have his voice properly trained. In Rome for the past four years with his wife, a former Brisbanite, and two children Gerard and Michael, Mr. Kestel has worked hard and is now a well known figure in the operatic world. Besides the recent engagements in London already mentioned Mr. Kestel is due shortly to sing in Maltar and in different provincial centres in Italy. A singing tour in South Africa is contemplated in the near future and when he has gained sufficient experience Dennis hopes to face the critical audiences of his native Australia. It would appear that a native Australian must really have achieved world status for acceptance back home. On the other hand, one hears complaints that Australian artists forsake the mother country in favour of the more secure patronage overseas.
