The Australian Catholic Relief Lenten Appeal for 1969 is in the last stages of preparation. Presently there are thousands of little "Hitlers" in society, each revolting against order, decency, honesty and love of neighbour. But they are al l l ike tiny globules of mercury that are scattered in myriads of direction; society, with them in its midst, becomes like Vietnam in which there is no battlefield — every segment of society is a battlefield: the home where there is conflict, the streets where there is mugging, and the city government where there is the Mafia.
SHORTCOMINGS
Presently such individuals have no voice except their own; they need a megaphone, and in the words of the popular song — "Some day he'l l come along, the man I love" — the man who will articulate the confused, unify the dispersed, vocalise the hidden hates and turn microcosmic violence into one Great Violence. He wil l enable them to escape their own individual responsibility by surrendering to one who, in the language of Dostoievski, "will smash all these logarithms to smithereens." Like many Germans under Hitler, they will say, "What could we do? We didn't know what was right."
To avert the danger it is well to remind ourselves that there are certain things given in life; we can no more create our own values than we can create a new sun in the heavens. It is the loss o f values that are above and beyond us that make us weak. Many of the soliers in the Korean war collaborated with the enemy. Why? They were not used to discipline; they had no standards, no beam, no port. The citizen who believes that he will be judged by Goodness and Love will not succumb to the Great Lie. Neither will the man who sees evil in his own heart, for he can immediately rejes:. The central focus of the pastoral is the dignity and value of human life, as „We set forth in the opening line. honour God when we reverence human life." The pastoral attempts to show the link between the worship of God and the love of life. Undoubtedly the Bishops had in mind those deeper questions that trouble men's minds that were posed so clearly in the Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. "What is man? What is this sense of sorrow, of evil, of death, which continues to exist despite so much progress?" On the more personal level an individual might well ask himself — What does the Church, or the State, or human society, or any other person care about me? What good are my efforts, my thoughts and dreams, my daily work? Basically, does anyone care, and why.
