A LITTLE over a hundred years ago, about 65 per cent of the population of America l ived on farms; presently, the figure is about 12 per cent. About one-fifth of pregnant mothers continue to work even during the later s tages of their pregnancy. A l ittle less than half of wives who have been married from six to ten years are working, which creates the problem of what happens to the children during the day. I t used to be that the family made the church — the parish being the sum of families. Today it is the church which makes the family, keeps them together, helps educate the children, while parents are at work and prepare the young for m arriage. Throughout the Old Testament, the home was the centre of virtue and culture. In the New Testament, many a youth was instructed to return to his

T he Fami ly WHAT IS THE FAMILY? The Family is a place, where two mysteries a re enacted—first, it is the area where the unlovable are loved, and second, it is the environment in which love solves personality problems. We do not say that it is wholly a place of love, because there are tensions in the home as wel l as anywhere else. Was it not Ogden Nash who wrote: "Children won't be happy with nothing to ignore So that's what parents were created for.' There is no merit in loving others who are lovable. It is easy to love lovable children, but to love them when they are unlovable is the unfailing sign of a family. One mother gave a party for the

children of the neighbourhood. Icecream cones were brought to each child. Her child began screaming: "This is vanilla—I don't want vanilla." The mother answered: "Listen, I didn't want you either; but now that I have you, I have learned to love you. You love that vanilla." When the children are cantankerous, rebellious and shriek their heads off, particularly on rainy days, it is very difficult to love them with patience. But once parents recognise that God loves them even when they are unlovable, it inspires them to do the same for their children. Curious it is how one can love and hate at the same time; but we do. How can I love God and still sin? St. Paul said: "The good I will to do, I do not; and the evil I will not, that I do." This contrariety of emotions at one and the same time does not prove love is not primary in our make-up. Parents love the children through their squabbles, t antrums and furies, and so God loves us through ours. As He puts love where He does not find it, so parents put love w here they do not find, for the moment, anything lovable; but thus they become lovable.

U nloved THE SECOND MARK of the t rue family spirit is to use love to solve personality problems. The tragedy of our day is that so many are unloved; they are used, but they are not loved.

Frederick I I of the 13th century brought together a number of abandoned children and put them in the care of nurse , who were instructed never to speak a word to the children, nor show any facial emotion or gesture of love. Frederick w anted to find out what language they would speak. The experiment failed. All t he children died, and they died for want of love. A similar experiment was made with monkeys. The young ones were taken away from their mothers; half of them were allowed to go near an imitation monkey that was electrically heated, and could also simulate an embrace. The other little monkeys had no monkey mother, real or artificial . The first monkeys grew up to be like other monkeys, but those who lacked even simulated a ffection, grew to be the "craziest monkeys." In the London Blitz, some children were removed from London to the country; others were left with mothers in the bombardment. The children who were with mothers in the Blitz were in better health than those who were evacuated, though they spent their time with other people. The family then is a place where, under the influence of love, we learn from mistakes rather than a place where we are punished for them. Discipline, however, is not to be disowned. Nothing develops character like a pat on the back, provided it is given hard enough, often enough and low enough. Only he who loves may punish.

Human life in our day eral purpose was to write a document that was addressed to pastoral problems of American Catholics. It was to be practical, direct, and not too lengthy. At the same time, things were happening with great rapidity in the world that affected the matters under consideration. Moves towards peace in Vietnam, the American political campaign, the appreciating problems of our cities, the seeming failure to come up with policies and p rogrammes that gave assurance of winrung the poverty war were some of the t hings that required careful study by the Bishops who were writing the document. Nonetheless, the target date of August 1 for the submission of drafts and position papers was adhered to.

It means looking at my everyday life to see what goes on around me; to review my l ife each day — the opportunities I had to talk to someone but did not, to listen to the problem of my workmate but would not, to help my folks at home but couldn't find the time. I come to a group meeting firstly because of the friendship I find there. The members of the group have a number of things in common. We live in the same area, went to school together, go to the same church, play sport and go out together. We come together to share the experiences of our daily lives — to learn from each other. We discuss the needs of our area — lack of social life, the needs of migrants. We hold dances, visit new people in the area, help the parish priest in his work. We come back to the meeting and talk about our activities — the people we met and their problems. We look at the life of Christ and see how he handled similar situations — ,ve try to bring Christ into our lives and the lives of others. FLEXIBILITY

A t the meeting we endeavour to keep to a set agenda but do not become too bound up with formalities. Flexibility is the key word but this flexibility can only be achieved by knowing the needs of each group member and the parish or area and when one member is telling of an experience then the rest of us listen and perhaps learn from his or her experience. Y.C.W. is a great way of making friends, helping others and slowly but surely realising our commitment as Christians and sanctifying our lives in Christ through our everyday work.
