THE HOLY THE SECULAR AND Something Snapped
WHEN Communism began in Russia, its great boast was that everybody would be a "comrade." But what has happened to the comrades" in these days of marshals and generals and three kinds of department stores for three different economic levels of buyers? The explanation is simple — even in Russia, everyone wanted to keep up with the Ivans or the Joneses. The psychology of humankind is to move upwards, not downwards; to be lifted up and levelled off. I t looks very much as if the Churches are suffering the same fate as the "comrades." Too long isolated from the poverty, hunger and rat-infested conditions of dilapidated housing, they rightly moved down to the hungry and the unhoused, broke bread with them and shed a common tear with their sorrow. May t hey never abandon this service or turn their backs on slums, crime and del inquency.
BUT something snapped, just a s it did in Russia. As Russia revolted against the level l ing off of all people into "comrades," so have the slum-dwellers revolted against the identification of religion and social service, of theology and s ociology, of the churches and the housing. It was right for the Holy City to go into the Secular City, but wrong to cal ! the Secular City the Holy City. Once the churches became "pantheistic" or made everything God, then what was the difference between the forger and the forged, the rapist and the raped, the Divine and the Secular? If everything secular is Divine, then there is no Divine. Certainly the clergy should become sociologists, but what if the people wanted t helogy. Moses was right in coming down f rom the mountain top, but not if he gave up the wisdom born from communion with God and worshipped the Golden Calf. Dentists in the Inner City can do something else besides care for teeth, but what if the people have toothaches? Though the churches may get their hands dirty, they may never forget that t heir hands dispense the Divine. They are leaven in the Inner City, but not the
city; they are the yeast, but not the dough; they are the salt of the earth, but not its honey. If they bring no other balm than that which can be bought in pharmacies, why not surrender to the druggists who are better equipped to give aspirin?
" Come Down !" ONCE the spiritual inspiration or faith is gone, there echoes across the garbage heaps of cities, old and new, the cry, "Come Down From the Cross and we will believe." He had already come down from heaven, but to come down f rom the work of salvation would be to betray. It is human to come down; it is Divine to hang there crucified to a mission! The only purpose of going down is to lift people up. That is why He said: "If I be lifted up, I will drawn all men to Myself." The descent is for purposes of ascent; t he humiliation is for exaltation not for absorption. The term "free society" is pompous nonsense unless men know what they are free for. If the churches do not bring along with service something to lift up human hearts, then the social gospel is nothing but "slumming," or the descent into the slums to enjoy t he shock and the thri l l of contrast with lower forms of l ife. God could not have saved this world unless He came into it, but if He never rose above it, thn He too would need saving.

In a novel written almost fifty years ago, "If Winter Conies," by A. S. M. Richardson, a certain Sabre, in answer to the statement that "the churches say, 'Man cannot l ive by bread alone,' but I am living on bread alone and doing well on it," says: "I tel l you Hapgood, that plumb down in the crypt and the abyss of every man's soul is a hunger, a craving for food other than this earthly stuff. Gradual ly the infant becomes aware of himself as separate from his mother, and he begins to distinguish other persons from his mother and from himself. be a boy or a girl is a primary requisite. And finally, when emotional instability in adolescence and sexual problems of both single and married people have been found to be closely related to—if not caused by —a failure to properly define sexual identity, it is that much more important to find out how the process of sexual identification really works. So that the basic question — how do boys get to be boys, and girls, girls? How does the child define and affirm his or her own sexual identity?
GOING BACK AS MIGHT BE EXPECTED, the process can be traced to the earliest months of
I t is at this point that the child is more susceptible to his father's influence, and is beginning to note the differences between father and mother. It is during this early childhood phase that the youngster is able to identify with one or the other parent and with older brothers or sisters — thereby becoming a ware of what it means to be a boy or a girl. The role of parents and family members is extremely important for two reasons. First, the child is gradually learning the difference between father-love and mother-love, and this provides stability. Secondly, there are some who plead for such total sexual equality as to do a way with accepted sexual role definitions. They plead for a totally democratic family structure where all roles a re interchangeable. In reality, the American family is pretty democratic, and the family roles are not the major stumbling blocks to equality. In fact, marital love gives more assurance of equality, and love cannot be limited to role fulfilment. The important point, however, is that in a totally democratic structure that respects no role definitions, the young child has no external signs of maleness or femaleness to pattern himself or herself on.

According to Kagan, granting the importance of the peer-group, this can work against educational growth for some children. If a young boy associates with girls, there is lacking a powerful incentive that might otherwise lead him to excel. For this reason Kagan suggests separating boys and girls in the grade school and having male teachers for the boys. I t is extremely important for each parent to perform certain actions regularly so that the child will have clear and definite models of male and female activity, that is, a definite idea of roles. But it is also important that each parent pursue certain activities that are common to both sexes, e.g., reading, studying, listening to music, so that the child doesn't define the activity only by what he sees in the peer-group. Each parent must also show a definite interest in the child's s choolwork, his learning ability, and his inquisitiveness. Indeed, in some cases, a father may have to go out of his way to indicate his interest to the child. Although educational achievement is high on the priority list, it is not the only factor in the child's growth and development. Each parent should also encourage the development of other specific talents or skills, since these also help the child to build a sense of person worth or prestige. They are extremely important c ompensation for the child whose intellectual capabilities are slow-paced or l imited.

A French nun of the Congregation of St. Paul of Chartres, died on October 4. She had given 63 years of her life to the service of the Vietnamese people without ever returning to her native France For the past two years she had been in retirement and some thought she had left the country, but the news of her death brought large crowds to attend the funeral of one who had been so devoted to the Vietnamese. For 30 years she been a well-known figure in Saigon, as she went her rounds to hospitals, leper asylums and prisons, driving an old black Peugeot. Both the French and V ietnamese authorities had recognised her worth, and she had been decorated with the Legion of Honour award, the Vietnamese N1tional Merit award and the Bronze Medal for hospital services.
