JOHN A. GREAVES writes from LONDON.

CONCERN is mounting in Britain over the effects of the country's new abortion laws, which came into force just over five months ago. Already more than 14,000 women have had legal abortions, including some 9,000 of them free through the National Health Service. It is estimated that the figure will reach 30,000 by the end of the first 12 months. About 40 per cent of these operations have taken place in private nursing homes and from all reports the law has now legalised and encouraged the abortionist profiteers that the sponsors of the law claimed it would suppress.

Opponents of the act had claimed that in practice it would allow abortion on demand t hrough the National Health Service because of the "social clause," w hich permits abortion when pregnancy or birth not only affects the phy- AN all-night Vigil for coffee will be provided, sical or mental health of but those taking part are Christian Vocations will asked the mother, but also of to bring everything any existing child and be the conclusion of the else. a llows the total social Annual Solemn Novena On the first day of the environment of the Novena, Saturday, Novmother to be taken into in honour of Our Lady ember 30, there will be of the Miraculous Medal t wo sessions, at 5.30 p.m. account. and to be held in St. Mary's there7.30 p.m. Other days will be one session Cathedral from Satur- at 7.30 p.m. The Novena day, November 30, to will end with a torchlight procession on Sunday, Sunday, December 8. Solid studies of the HOUSING ROW AT Encyclical needed By JAMES C. O'NEILL.

THE time for declarations and polemics against Pope Paul VI's encyclical on birth control, "Humanae Vitae," is over, Father Bernard Haering, C.SS.R., said in an interview in Rome. T he well-known theologian said that "Humanae chief concerns should find a full response itae's" V positive teachings should be deepened and a nd its brought to a fuller understanding.

BIRMINGHAM

THE housing chief in Birmingham, Britain's second biggest city, told the Catholic Church it should help pay for homes for large Catholic families not practising birth control. Alderman Anthony Beaumont Dark, chairman of the city's housing committee, declared: "If people in authority make a policy by which it is against the laws of the Church to use contraceptives, they should also be prepared to accept responsibility for that policy. If a Church sets out on such a course that the inevitable result is large families then it ought to think about helping them.

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Discusses . • •

LACK LOVE

NOTHING breaks down race hatred as much as personal contact. Only by the sense of touch do we take a people out of the anonymous group where they are hated, into the human order where they are seen to be lovable. This was the theme of an earlier article. In this we continue describing how personal contact with others breaks down prejudice, on the grounds that touch creates an infection of goodness. True, there are contagious diseases, but there is also contagious goodness. True, infections, spread by touch, but so do good personal relations. Just as the body has both an afferent nerve and an efferent nerve, one which conducts sensation to the brain and the other which transmits thoughts from the brain, so too, personal contact helps both the one who touches and the one who is touched.

T he Healing Touch The touch of the doctor to the patient brings a sense of healing to the patient, but the patient in his turn expresses confidence and thanks and hope to the doctor. The woman in the crowd who crept up behind Our Lord and touched His garment was hoping for the infection of healing as she said: "If I but touch the hem of His garment, I will be healed.' On the part of the Lord Himself, there was a communication, for He said that He felt a power go out from Him. His goodness infected her body and her soul exchanged faith for His healing power. The poor extend their open hands hoping for communication of charity, while the charitable extend to them their cupped hands, filled with alms. In any exchange of goodness, the giver and receiver are both blessed. On record is a medical history of ten orphan asylums where, with one exception, every single child who was admit-

ted before the age of one, died before t he age of two for want of love. Experiments were conducted in another hospital where children were divided into two groups—one called the "Nursery group" where they were cared for by their own mothers. The other, the "Foundling group" where there was only one nurse for every eight to 12 children. The mothers in the nursery picked up their children many times a day. The foundlings were given the minimum of a ttention. After two years, the Nursery group who were loved by their mothers became normal children. The Foundling group could not walk nor feed themselves, but were described by doctors as "apathetic idiots." After five years, in the Nursery group where there was love, not a single child was lost. In the second group, 37 per cent of the children died.

F rustrated Love Similar experiments have been made among juvenile delinquents. The more serious offenders and those most apt to repeat crimes, were those who were from divorced or separated parents and, therefore, who grew up without any love. Aggressive behaviour is due to frustrated love. Aggression is a technique for compelling love. Psychiatrists tell us that children steal money from their parents, not because they know the

1968

value of money, nor because they want to spend it, but because they want som,a. thing which they do not have, namelylove. The wanting of money is a vicarious' substitute for want of love. The love which infects others need not necessarily be a material love, but there must be some manifestation of affection. A group of young monkeys were divided into two groups, both separated from the mothers. One group was without any relationship to one who might bestow affection, the other monkeys were given a mechanical mother which was electrically warmed and whose arms could be moved mechanically, thus giving some show of affection. The young monkeys who were in the care of the mechanical mother and received some semblance of a ffection and warmth became normal monkeys. The others turned out to be the craziest of all monkeys. The first picture of the world that the young have is through the experience they have with the mother. If the mother is loving or unloving, so later the child will consider the world as loving or unloving. In order, then, to establish communications with other people, it is not only necessary to move among them and to social ise with them in order to convert their anonymity into persons; it is also necessary to infect them with one's goodness and love. This is best done not by a cheque alone, but by diffusing warmth, fellowship and love, especially in the Inner City. Those whom we touch in loving service are always lovable.

The theologian emphasised that it is not correct to say the Church wishes to impede any beatification, but the Church must be ever careful not to become proposals aligned to "tinged with fanaticism." Prudence must never be interpreted as indifference, he added. Referring to the stigmata of Padre Pio, Archbishop Lambruschini reminded that in Church history there have been several hundred people who have received these signs. by Father T. McHugh ANYONE who stands outside a school and watches the children at play can come away with the impression that our children are well taken care of. Add to this impression the proliferation of facil ities from kindergarten through graduate school, and the almost total dedication to education that we show, and it's relatively easy to be convinced that we are producing a people that wil l find the solution to all human problems. . Whether or not these impressions are verified is not the important issue. What does merit some attention is the fact that every child will not be prepared for life by our general educational effort, that for those who have special needs, as

Like all the other entrants she is hard at work r aising money to aid research into muscular dystrophy, and so far she is doing pretty well. $80,000 is needed for special equipment, and she tel ls us that her "Wheelbarrow Wheelabout" held recently netted S2,000 of it. All entrants in the quest will be present at A scot races on November 30 — Miss Sunshine Cup Day, when proceeds will, by kind permission of the W.A.
