The route to the hotel necessarily passed through the Inner City with its hovels, its broken homes and its more broken people. One official said apologetically to the visitor: "I am sorry that you have to see the worst features of our city, but we will soon be out this mess."

ing creates an obligation; it involves the viewer. He has to make a decision for or against aiding him. If his eyes saw, his hand would have to follow; he would have to stoop, become besmirched with blood and grime, and he would have to miss an appointment. Sleep is a delightful irresponsibility, but next to it is custody of the eyes which dare not look at misery lest one is obligated to relieve it.

The important word in this excuse is the word "see." The word crops up often in the greatest of human stories. Take the parable of the Good Samaritan. The wounded man on the highway who was beaten up by robbers, was seen by a priest and a levite who were probably on their way to liturgical services in the Temple. The victim did not belong to their race— he lived "on the other side of the tracks." So they skirted the bleeding form in order not to "see" him. What difference did seeing make? See-

So the visitor must have his eyes averted from disaster and poverty, lest he think that the city was not doing its duty to the poor in the way of housing, education and recreation. We can so often see things not as they are, but as we are.

He is the only character in a parable who is given a name which is the Latinised form of Eleazar, meaning "God is my help." Covered with ulcerated sores, he could not even ward off the street dogs

who licked at them. The rich man never drove Lazarus from the gate. We can go to hell not because of what we do, but because of what we do not do in the face of misery. All the rich man did was to ignore—he just did not "see" the beggar. He drove in by another gate with his carriage — he avoided the Inner City. He could not look at sores on a body lest he feel the need to scratch. So Lazarus was kept at the back door, invisible to the creation of responsibility. It is even conceivable that the rich man who ignored Lazarus made a contribution once a year for the needy, felt generous and full of the humanitarian spirit, saying: "The only way to help these people is through the social agencies, but the individual can do nothing." He did not "see." These are the people who ask: "Why is God so remote to me?" Or they say "God is dead" because they do not see Him, when all the while He is alive in the wretched.

Despite our eyecontrol, the poor are there; Christ is there, and if we do not love them enough to see them, maybe we will miss the Saviour Who is hidden in them.

The love of and family can very often make parents up for the disadvantage, and medical science is discovering ways to effectively neutralise the harm. The choice of abortion or infanticide—and this has been recommended as a solution to children born with deformity —is an acknowledgment that we cannot love a child. Secondly, although parents whose children are born with disadvantages see the problem in a very personal way, we cannot maintain a high value on human life if we write exceptions into our laws that allow for the termination of life in certain selected situations. If we subscribe to a legal system that allows selective elimination of persons who do not possess all physical or mental advantages, we adopt a principle that can be extended to include racial, ethnic, religious and social f actors as well. We thereby attribute to individuals and to the State the power over life and death. We cannot place this power in the hands of some and still maintain for all "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

MISSION NOTES . • • A Carmelite Convent In Local Style At Zaza in Rwanda the Carmelites have shown both z201 2nd courage in establishing a founziation adapted to the African mentality and way of life. Abandoning their ed %,,alled monastery, they have built a new structure in A frican style.

As is customary in all Carmelite convents, the Community holds a weekly Chapter at which spiritual and material matters are discussed and they examine how the Community can better serve its purpose. At one of these assemblies, a young native Sister expressed the idea that Carmelites should adapt themselves to the African mentality. The life of the African Carmelite was a scandal to the people of Zaza. Could not something be done — not to change the spirit but to adapt it and become more involved in African life? A point in question was that of poverty. The Carmel of Zaza had a modest structure of European style in stone and cement; to the natives it was comparable to a palace. And yet when a young lady entered the convent, she was asked: "What do you desire?" The answer according to the Ritual was: "The mercy of God, the poverty of the Order, and the companionship of Sisters." The African novice had left a hut of mud and is rather bewildered in her new home. LITURGICAL VIEWPOINT (NO. 18) Mercedes college speech night

By Father R. D. Lane, S.J. The Anointing of the Sick is still, I fear, improperly understood by many people, although highly valued. It is not, and was never intended to be, a sacrament only for the dying, although its medieval title of "Extreme Unction," or "last anointing," obviously had this in mind. Christ became man in order to bring men closer to God, and in the sacraments of the Church He uses human means as points of contact between those who need help and Himself. We must realise that it is not only in the Eucharist that Christ is present, but that He is present in all the sacraments, though in a different way. In each of the sacraments Christ comes to us to bring us help and encouragement in a particular need, and the Anointing of the Sick is no exception. Our needs, at this time, are those of someone seriously ill: physical recovery and peace of soul. Since man is mortal, physical recovery will not be granted in all cases—we must all finally die of some sickness or other—but it is ignoring this aspect of the sacrament to wait until recovery through normal means is close to impossible. God works, most of .the time, through ordinary human agents and circumstances, and we should not wait until recovery would be regarded as miraculous. But peace of soul is always offered: not only forgiveness of sins, but the grace to accept the suffering of the sickness, and even death, as an opportunity to share in Christ's suffering as He shared our human nature with all its deficiencies. Christ always, during His life on earth, had the greatest compassion for the sick and suffering, and He offers us consolation, if only we go halfway to meet Him. Most of the prayers of the anointing ceremony refer to the forgiveness of sins, and those which emphasise sickness and recovery are mainly used when the oil is consecrated on Holy Thursday. However, they are being revised in order to rectify this omission. We must keep in mind, therefore, that the sacrament should be received if possible, by everyone who is seriously ill, and preferably while they are still able to make a personal and conscious response to the graces offered to them.

Recommended Books "Preaching the Liturgical Renewal" is the title of a collection of miniature talks and homilies on the liturgy itself. It does not cover every possible aspect, nor does it provide something fcri every day of the liturgical year: but the talks are simple without being childish, and are tied in to the scripture of some Sundays or feastdays, where this is appropriate. Although

originally published in 1964, it has not dated. It is the work of a group, and appears with an introduction by H. A. Reinholt and a short article on Liturgical Preaching by R. Lechner, C.P.P.S. (Helicon, paper, $1.45 Aust.) "Imparting the Christian Message" by J. Hofinger, S.J., is not a new book either, but is a paperback extract from "The Art of Teaching Christian Doctrine." My reason for mentioning it here is that after a short introduction on the basic points of catechetics it gives plans for explanations on basic Christianity which are excellent homily material. Although not ordered for the liturgical year, the instructions are well planned by Father Hofinger, who has had considerable success in teaching the faith. (University of Notre Dame Press, $1.55 Aust.) This should be obtainable through any bookseller, or else through Charles Paine Pty. Ltd. "Introduction to the Liturgy": the subtitle of this book—"towards a theology of worship"— gives a good indication of its intent. It is not an explanation of various rites and aspects of the liturgy, but rather a systematic examination and exposition of the theology behind the liturgy both in general and in particular instances. For a book of 200 pves it has a very detailed table of contents, which makes it a very easy book to refer back to. The translation (the original is German) is good, and topics suCh as "the liturgy as a personal encounter with God," and "the place of Christ in the liturgy" are treated concisely, but with all the background of current theological thought and biblical research one could desire. Although really intended for those with some theological background, it should be enlightening to anyone willing to read it quietly and seriously. It is well printed and hardbound. ( Burns Oates, $5.80 Aust.)

New Music "Sing the Mass" gives the ordinary of the Mass (the English bishops' version, so of little use here) and four settings of the ordinary, all previously published on separate sheets, I understand. But the only part of these that could be used without adaptation to the Australian text are the Kyries. Perlonally, I do not like any of them, except the Kyrie by Alan Rees, but they may sound better when sung by a congregation. The Masses are, for those who may find them of interest, even if not of immediate use: Mass of St. David, by Alan Rees; Mass of St. Dunstan, by Thomas Symonds, 0.S.B.; A People's English Mass, by Wilfred Trotman; and Mass of St. Therese, by Guy Weitz. The publication is by Geoffrey Chapman, and although I have no price, it should be inexpensive.
