PROTOCOL was swept away on October 11, 1963, when the Ukrainian Rite Archbishop of Lviw rose to address a session of the Second Vatican Council. Cardinal Lercaro, who was acting as Moderator on that day had asked the Assembly to refrain from applause. But when the Archbishop reached the microphone the Counci l Fathers greeted him with a rousing ovation. Archbishop Joseph Slipyj was, and remains, a hero of the Church. For 18 years he had been a prisoner in Soviet Labour camps, and had been released a mere twelve months before he rose to speak at the Vatican Counci l. E CAN BE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WE NEED, AND YET NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS.
WHEN the body is sick it craves for a cure, though only the doctor knows what is needed. The prodigal son was right in being hungry, he was wrong in living on husks. For what is the empty heart of modern man searching? What is going on under the surface? As great rivers are hidden under the sands of the Sahara, so, too, hidden under the crust of secularity is a quest for the "irrelevant" or the "spiritual." For example, Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, Professor of History at Columbia University, sticks a pin into an old mood of "nervous scurrying for relevance." "What people come to religion for is an ultimate meta-physical hunger, and when that hunger is not satisfied, religion declines. The very moment that clerics become more worldly, the world goes to rot all the faster. What is left out is religion's main business—love and God and the Transcendent." The Wall Street Journal, commenting on the words of Doctor Hertzberg, adds: "The restlessness-in-affluence, so widely recognised, today almost certainly bespeaks a human craving for something transcendent. Individuals are seeking something to lend meaning to life and to end the jumble of their lives and time."

HE STATEMENT o n "Humanae Vitae" by the p residency of the Italian episcopal c onference may appear. at first sight, a mere endorsement of the encyclical, but it is an interpretation of it which opens possibilities for

CIENTISTS, in their turn, are S telling us that they bring us only to the edge of the picture of the universe, but the artist is outside of it. Even such a distinguished physicist as Eddington concluded his study of the universe with a chapter on mysticism. Ludwig Wittgenstein, who supplied the material for many of our American "God-isdeaders," has a line which they often ignored. The great problem is "not how the world IS, but THAT it is." In other words, there is a spiritual and meta-phystcal problem behind all our explanations about words and meanings. Does not the contemporary madness of youth for psychedelic drugs betray a flight from the world, and a desire for the ultrasecular? They are wrong in seeking the transcendent by a rearrangement of images through chemistry; but they are

right in looking for something above and beyond the crazy world. Are not the modern theatre and such dramatists as Beckett, Kafka and Miller called in words of Amos Wilder "uncanonical witnesses to the faith?" "Waiting for Godot" was really a waiting for God Who is not recognised because He comes as the Suffering Servant. Modern abstract art, which ignores reality as it is, is also a hidden question for something beyond the secular. As Denis de Rougemont has said: "Art is actually a calculated trap for meditation." Existential philosophy is also a quest for the personal answer to anxiety and despair. Not even the so-called atheism of our time argues against the yearning for the spiritual. There is no more an eclipse of God than there is an eclipse in the sun. Every eclipse is due to some object between the sun and ourselves. God is not dead. The eclipse of Divinity may only

CINALLY, even the attacks upon organised Christianity or institutional religion are for the sake of rnYsticism and spirituality. When religion becomes so formalised that it no longer exudes holiness, its followers begin to desert it. Their real complaint is not that it is too holy for the world, but not unworldly enough. Within the space of a few years public opinion has had a ten per cent reaction, according to the Gallup poll, against identifying religion with economics and sociology. Almost all our signs and portents of the future are negative. We know what we hate, but we do not know what we love. Despite this, there is hope, but it is beneath the surface. One secular university, which would never be suspected of such a thing, had a course on mysticism. If we do not allow our affluence and our hate to ruin us, if we do not permit the forces of anarchy to take over law and order, if we but remove the blinkers which hide the Great Reality outside of us, we may be on the verge of a renewed mysticism of a totally different kind, and at the margin of the greatest discovery of all times: "The Kingdom of God is within you."

THE SCHOOLS OF THE NATION HAVE REOPENED THEIR DOORS AND BEGUN TO PURSUE IN ALL EARNESTNESS THE WORK OF EDUCATION, PARENTS — ESPECIALLY THE MOTHERS—ARE WONT TO BREATHE A SIGH OF RELIEF. "NOW that the kids are back at school" seems to be the prelude to dreams of freedom, of peacefulness and order, to the re-establishment of some orderly regimen that pours over into all of family life. Behind all the dreams, however, is the very real concern—perhaps the dominating concern of our age—about the education of the young. We have, as a society, pretty much subscribed to the thesis that the answer to most problems lies in our ability to educate our children. James Michener, in his New York Times article some weeks ago, maintained that the most important value of his generation was education, and was interested in reading a letter from a high school girl who agreed with Mr. Michener in regard to the rejec-
tion of many middle-class values by today's youth, with the exception of education. This young lady espoused the idealism of Robert Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy, but now, seemingly frustrated by the unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the establishment—returned to school with the glimmer of hope that her education would prepare her to help build a better world. • PROSPECTS ON THE OTHER HAND, hardly a day goes by but that we are informed of the problems and inadequacies of the nation's schools. And if things aren't bad enough now, the prospect for the future— money-wise, teacher-wise, facilities-wise— are even worse. At the same time, the general conclusion of educators is that whatever the school has to offer is too little and too late if the first five to seven years have been wasted. The most effective prep school for the university is the crib. It is here that the child begins to build the structures that will help him interpret, control and finally dominate the world in which he will live. He begins by forming his first relationships with people, and follows this by set-
ting up a communications structure. Recognition of mother leads to a smile, a cry and finally to language. The ties that bind him to other members of his race are being formed; the horizons of the world outside him are already shrinking with manageable perspectives. We used to debate the relative influence of heredity versus environment in regard to childhood development, but we now realise that both interact. The single most powerful influence is the family. In fact, a recent study of high school students showed that family stability and the value placed on education in the home outweigh all other factors in leading a youngster to pursue an education. Where family value on education is high, despite other problems, there are less drop-outs. The past five years have seen some excellent efforts to supplement the work of parents for pre-school children. Nursery schools, Montessori groups, and the HeadStart Programme are all aimed in this direction. But in final analysis there is no substitute for parental effort and influence. • BASIC TRUTHS WE HAVE LEARNED a good deal, however, about the young child, and this makes the work of parents somewhat easier. There are two basic truths that command our attention. First of all, there is no one method of teaching young children that can be used for all of them. Each child is a unique person, with his own temperament and abilities, with his own readiness schedule, and his own needs.

Secondly, children are persons, lacking in the total development of the adult, unaware of their own capacities, but corn. posed of the same stuff that adults are made of. They have minds and wills, a set of emotions; they are subject to physical, social and emotional factors that stabilise or upset their equilibrium. These two truths are the most important principles for parents. Accept each child as a person, treat each child in the light of his own maturity. This calls for flexibility in dealing with children, and for the utilisation of as many approaches as are available. "If at first you don't succeed, try again" is a good rule of thumb. Parents cannot be reassured frequently enough that their interest is the important and valuable thing. If they don't hit immediately on the right programme to follow, the child is not harmed. Their willingness to be partners in the learning process compensates for all else. Although the trend seems to be in the direction of earlier formal schooling and more structures to the educative process, we may well see the day when the youngster starts later and depends even more on the cooperative effort of the home. It's worth remembering that regardless of the formal educational structure of the past, or its absence, the home was always able to provide the basics for intellectual development.

O mark the close of the centenary celebrations of the Church in mainland Tanzania, over 11,000 people attended an open-air Mass on July 21, concelebrated by Cardinal Alfrink of Utrecht and four Tanzanian bishops, with the sermon delivered by Cardinal Rugambvva of Tanzania. The Mass was preceded by a public prooce sion through the streets of the capital, from the various churches to the Mnazi Mmoja grounds in the centre of the city, where the Mass was offered. Thirty-three other bishops and Ordinaries from East Africa and Europe knelt on one side of the dais during the Mass, while the President of the country, Julius Nyerere, and his wife, both of whom received Holy Communion during the service, and other dignitaries knelt on the other side. Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli, Secretary General of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, reading Pope Paul's message after the Gospel, said in part: "The Missionaries came to Africa for only one reason—to share with Africans the message of peace and redemption which the Lord entrusted to His Church." One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation by laymen from the various dioceses of Tanzania of 24 large candles, each bearing the name of his diocese, to the principal concelebrant at the Offertory of the Mass. They were then placed on golden candlesticks before the altar, honouring the arrival of the Church in each of these 24 dioceses in this mission land. The final day of celebration was preceded by a week of events in Dar es Salaam to mark the centenary. Of special interest among these were a daily Mass celebrated each evening in St. Joseph's Cathedral by one of the visiting bishops, with a special sermon delivered by another bishop, meetings of the Episcopal Conference of Tanzania, meetings of A.M.E.C.E.A. (The ASS3ciation of Bishops of East and Central Africa), a joint meeting of the Catholic and Protestant bishops to discuss ecumenical guidelines, meetings of the Lay Apostolate, an exhibit depicting the century of progress, a number of receptions of the bishops by various embassies, and daily entertainment attuned to the event being celebrated. During the week, the local press gave ample coverage to the centenary, with the "Sunday News" printing a five-page supplement covering the past and present history of the Church in Tanzania. On one of the final days of the celebrations an inter-faith service of Catholics, Lutherans and Anglicans was held in St. Joseph's Cathedral. In a special message for the centenary, the Anglican Bishop of Dar es Salaam, John Sepeku, said: "We thank God for the efforts of His Holiness Pope John, who stimulated the Churches in this spirit of friendship and unity. We beg God to reward him in Heaven. We pray also long life to His Holiness Pope Paul for his zeal in advancing these ideals of the unity of the

What Are You Going To Do on a Saturday Now?" which has plenty of bounce and sometimes haphazard direction. Several of the skits were extremely witty, lyrics to the musical items teamed snugly with the lifted tunes, and there was some lively choreography. Even the occasional raw note and lapsed timing helped brighten the lighthearted atmosphere of the evening. "The Night My Number Came Up" highlighted the terrors of the 19th man, and "What's a OneEyed Fan" speaks for itself. "A Drink After the Game" and "Hooray for Tribunals" were bright, breezy and apt. A positively hilarious piece, "Alas, the Mighty Polly," based on extremely liberal quotations from the works of the Bard, was the highlight of the revue and raised continuous hearty laughter, as did the musical follow-up, "After the Game is Over," and the gentle dig at Sunday afternoon TV footy inquests, "World of Football." The star of the show was Scott Boyd, whose slightly pixyish approach gave him the air of a budding Peter Ustinov. This was not the most formidably polished revue I have seen, but it was bright and good, clean fun, and had some talented scriptwriting, for which credit goes to Colette Wiltshire. For those who see it, a very enjoyable evening is assured.—ARISTARCHUS.
